The announcement came through a press release issued by the Press Trust of India (PTI). Citing personal reasons, Mary Kom, a leading figure in the realm of Indian sports, expressed her regret at having to withdraw from such a distinguished role.
"Embarrassing to retreat from a commitment, but I am left with no choice," Mary Kom disclosed, indicating her unease with the decision to step back. This move represents a crucial juncture for the Indian Olympic team, which had greatly anticipated her guidance in the upcoming Paris games.
Dr. Usha, the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), acknowledged Mary Kom's departure and assured that the process of selecting her successor is underway. "We are sad that Olympic medal-winning boxer and Chairperson of the IOA Athletes Commission Mary Kom has stepped down citing personal reasons. In her resignation letter to the IOA President, Mary Kom expressed her gratitude for the trust placed in her and her initial readiness to serve in the role. "I consider it an honour to serve my country in every way possible, and I was mentally prepared for it. However, I regret that I will not be able to uphold the prestigious responsibility and would like to resign, owing to personal reasons. It is embarrassing to retreat from a commitment, which I seldom do, but I am left with no choice,&rdquo; Mary Kom explained. She also reassured, &ldquo;I am there to cheer on my country and the athletes competing in this Olympic Games, with great expectations.&rdquo;
Previously, upon her appointment, Mary Kom had publicly celebrated her new responsibility. She had posted on her X account, thanking the IOA: "This is a huge honour and responsibility, and I want to thank our legendary IOA president Ms. P.T.Usha and also my colleagues at the IOA for entrusting me with this responsibility. Six-time world champion boxer MC Mary Kom believes the next generation of athletes are not as hungry as she is to achieve success and are content with a single major accomplishment. The Olympic bronze medallist also stated that at 41 years old, she is "super fit" and eager to "achieve more and more."
&ldquo;I will fight (on), that fighting spirit only Mary Kom has... I have that something unique from other sports stars,&rdquo; Mary Kom, who has not ruled out turning pro in the coming years, said during an event on Saturday.
&ldquo;I am 41 years (old), I cannot fight any international (amateur) competition this year because there is that age limit. But I want to continue for one, two or three years,&rdquo; she said.
"If, like me, they have that spirit and that hunger, we will have so many medals in our country," Mary Kom added.
Incidentally, India returned with the richest-ever haul of 107 medals from the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year with many athletes winning multiple medals.
Mary Kom said she was pleased with the rise in number of young women taking up boxing.
"My hard work has paid off and now there are so many Mary Koms coming up. I feel so proud to be a girl, a mother, an Indian... so many are following my footsteps," she said.
While training and proper guidance are important for young athletes, hunger and inner drive are what make the difference, according to the boxing legend.
"Training is tough. Inner hunger and drive are the most important. Now, facilities are better. In 2001 when I started my career, no one knew women in boxing," she said.
Mary Kom believes that winning a medal in individual sports requires far more determination than winning a medal in team events.
"In football, cricket and basketball, you still have a chance. In individual sport, you lose and finish in one second. It comes from inside, chahe kuch bhi ho jaye medal lena hai (you have to win a medal irrespective of what happens). If you're not willing, nothing can happen," she added.

"What happened during the Commonwealth Games trials was very unfortunate. I suffered a major injury and I had to undergo a surgery," Mary said at the unveiling of the Indian team jersey ahead of the women's World Championship.
"I'm trying to come back soon. Because I have only this year, next year I'll be forced to retire. So this year I want to compete in any competition before the retirement." According to the rules, the maximum participation age for a boxer is 40 years and the Manipuri will turn 41 in November.
However, in order to be selected for the marquee-event, the London Olympics bronze medallist will have to go through the new selection process, which requires a boxer to go through an evaluation test in the national camp.

The MC Mary Kom-led panel that was earlier asked to submit its report in 4 weeks, has been given another 2-week extension and will now submit its report by March 9.&nbsp;
The committee responsible for the day-to-day functioning of WFI was formed after a sit-in protest by top Indian wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia &amp; Sakshi Malik, who were demanding the removal of Singh as the federation's president.
Since the formation of the committee, the top Indian wrestlers have not competed at the international meets, missing the Ranking Series events in Zagreb and Alexandria.
Meanwhile, wrestling's governing body UWW has reportedly taken away the hosting rights of the Asian Championship from India, citing a complaint from the top wrestlers.&nbsp;
