For the third straight day sensex and nifty settle with gains, helped by buying in auto, banking and capital goods shares

Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty settled with gains for the third straight session on Monday, helped by buying in auto, banking and capital goods shares despite a spike in crude oil prices.
The 30-share BSE Sensex rose 114.92 points or 0.19% to close at 59,106.44 points with 22 of its components ending in the green and eight closing lower. It moved in a range of 58,793.08 points to 59,204.82 points during intra-day trade.
Extending gains to the third day, the broader NSE Nifty advanced 38.30 points or 0.22% to close at 17,398.05 points. As many as 32 Nifty shares closed with gains while 18 stocks declined.
In the last three sessions, Sensex has risen by 1,492 points or 2.51% while Nifty has gained 446 points or 2.9%.
While gains in auto, capital goods and banking and financials shares supported the uptrend, selling in IT, FMCG and metal shares restricted the gains in the key indices.
"Investors were of the view that the easing price pressure would provide the central bank with leeway to pause the rate hike. However, the surprise production cut by OPEC+ has fuelled concerns about inflationary pressure, which may prompt central banks to remain hawkish," Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, said.
Oil prices jumped around 5% to nearly one month high of USD 84.19 per barrel on Monday after Saudi Arabia and other major oil producers announced a production cut of 1.15 million barrels per day from May until the end of the year.
On the other hand, manufacturing activities in India touched a three-month high in March boosted by faster expansion in new orders and output amid demand resilience and easing of cost pressures, according to a monthly survey.
Global markets were mixed as a spike in crude oil prices fuelled fears of high energy prices in Europe and the US.
Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index gained 0.5 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped 0.4% while the Shanghai Composite index rose 0.7 per cent.
Meanwhile, RBI's rate-setting panel on Monday started its three-day meeting amid expectations that the central bank may go for 25 basis points hike in benchmark interest rate, probably the last in the current monetary tightening cycle that began in May 2022.
On Friday, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers as they purchased shares worth Rs 357.86 crore.

The broader Nifty plunged 176.70 points or 1 per cent to close at 17,412.90, with 35 of its stocks ending in the red. The index moved in a range of 17,324.35 to 17,451.50 during the session.
Among Sensex shares, HDFC Bank fell the most by 2.58 per cent, followed by SBI (2.12 per cent), HDFC (2.09 per cent), and IndusInd Bank (2.02 per cent).
Axis Bank, Bajaj Finserv, M&amp;M, L&amp;T, Reliance, Infosys and TCS were among the major losers.
In contrast, Tata Motors, Maruti, NTPC, Sun Pharma, Power Grid and Titan were among the gainers.
Heavy selling in financial, banking, IT and capital goods shares triggered by weak Asian markets and overnight losses in the US market dragged down the benchmark indices, analysts said.

Snapping its three-day gaining streak, the 30-share BSE Sensex opened strong but came under severe selling pressure to close 541.81 points or 0.90 per cent lower at 59,806.28.
Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty declined 164.80 points or 0.93 per cent to 17,589.60.
M&amp;M was the top loser in the Sensex pack, skidding 3.31 per cent, followed by Reliance Industries, Bajaj Finserv, ICICI Bank, Maruti, Tata Motors and Tech Mahindra.
On the other hand, Tata Steel, L&amp;T, Axis Bank, Bharti Airtel and HDFC Bank were among the gainers.
Sector-wise, BSE Auto and Consumer Durable witnessed intense selling during the session.
In the broader markets, the BSE midcap fell 0.55 per cent and the small-cap slipped 0.20 per cent.
Bourses in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Seoul settled in the red while Tokyo closed with gains.
Equities in Europe were also trading with significant losses in mid-session deals. Equities on Wall Street closed mixed in the overnight session.
The rupee fell 7 paise to close at 82.02 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Wednesday as they purchased shares worth Rs 3,671.56 crore, according to exchange data.
Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude slipped 0.01 per cent to USD 82.65 per barrel.

Amid Adani row, FM says regulators should be on their toes to keep market stable

She said banks and insurance companies are "not overexposed" to any one company and assured that Indian markets are very well managed by its regulators.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that regulators Sebi and RBI should always be on their toes to keep the equity market stable and indicated that the Adani stock rout following a Hindenburg report was a company specific issue.
She said banks and insurance companies are "not overexposed" to any one company and assured that Indian markets are very well managed by its regulators.
"I don't want to have any view on it except that the regulators should act, act in time, and act to keep the market stable, act to keep India's regulatory functions at its best, whether it is the Reserve Bank, or SEBI. Sitting in the Finance Ministry, my view would be that the regulators should be always on their toes. And that is where I would comment on what's got to be done," Sitharaman said.
The Minister was replying to a question in an interview to Times Now on whether the Adani group stock rout was just a market activity, or this has happened for just one stock.
The Adani group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.

Equity benchmark BSE Sensex closed at an all-time high of 62,272.68 on Thursday, tracking a firm trend in global markets after the US Fed minutes indicated a slower pace of rate increase that bolstered investors' sentiment.
Extending its rally to the third straight day, the 30-share BSE benchmark rallied 762.10 points or 1.24 per cent to settle at 62,272.68, its record closing peak. During the day, it jumped 901.75 points or 1.46 per cent to its lifetime high of 62,412.33.
The broader NSE Nifty gained 216.85 points or 1.19 per cent to end at 18,484.10. During the day, it hit its 52-week high of 18,529.70, higher by 262.45 points or 1.43 per cent.
"Two triggers assisted the Sensex rally to record highs. One, in the mother market US, the market construct turned favourable with rising equities, declining bond yields and falling dollar. Two, macro developments in India show steady rise in credit growth and capex indicating strong economic recovery.
"Along with this, sharp correction in crude is a big positive. This has facilitated this Sensex rally led by large-caps, mainly the HDFC twins, Infosys, TCS and RIL," said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.
From the Sensex pack, HCL Technologies, Infosys, Wipro, Power Grid, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, Hindustan Unilever, HDFC, HDFC Bank and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra were among the major winners.
Bajaj Finserv, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finance and Kotak Mahindra Bank were the laggards.
Elsewhere in Asia, markets in Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong ended in the green, while Shanghai settled lower.
Equity exchanges in Europe were trading in the green in the afternoon trade. Wall Street had ended higher on Wednesday.
"Led by broad-based buying, domestic indices witnessed solid gains as investors digested the latest Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes, which hinted that the rate hike cycle may be slowing down. The optimism was further boosted by falling crude prices and the declining dollar index. Crude oil prices dropped over talks of a possible price cap on Russian oil and a rise in US product stockpiles," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.
International oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.46 per cent lower at USD 85.02 per barrel.

In what could pose to be a big hit for a supply choked global markets,&nbsp;Shanghai is looking to lockdown the city in two phases to conduct a mass testing for Covid-19 as it faces the worst outbreak since the Wuhan&nbsp;spread.&nbsp; Shanghai&rsquo;s Pudong financial district and nearby areas will be locked down from early Monday to Friday as citywide mass testing gets underway in China's largest city.&nbsp; Already, many communities within the city of 26 million have been locked down, with their residents required to submit to multiple tests for COVID-19. And Shanghai&rsquo;s Disney theme park is among the businesses that closed earlier.
