External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met US Secretary Marco Rubio in Kuala Lumpur on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit to discuss bilateral, regional, and global issues as both nations work to mend ties strained by recent US tariffs.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday held talks with his American counterpart Marco Rubio amid efforts by the two sides to reset bilateral ties that have come under severe strain over punitive US tariffs on Indian goods.
Jaishankar and Rubio met in Kuala Lumpur on the sidelines of the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
"Glad to meet @SecRubio this morning in Kuala Lumpur. Appreciated the discussion on our bilateral ties as well as regional and global issues," the external affairs minister said in a post on X.
The relations between New Delhi and Washington have been reeling under severe strain after US President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on India including an additional 25 per cent levies for its procurement of Russian crude oil. India described the US action as "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable".
It is understood that Jaishankar and Rubio also broadly delved into the proposed trade pact between the two sides. Five rounds of talks have been completed so far for the first phase of the bilateral trade agreement between India and the US. According to an official, the proposed trade deal is "very near" to concluding.
On Sunday, Jaishankar held separate talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and his Thai counterpart Sihasak Phuangketkeow.
The 11-nation ASEAN is considered one of the most influential blocs in the region, with India and several other countries, including the US, China, Japan and Australia, being its dialogue partners. Malaysia is hosting the annual ASEAN summit and related meetings in Kuala Lumpur in its capacity as the current chair of the grouping.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says India&rsquo;s Russian oil purchases aid Moscow&rsquo;s war, calling it a key irritant in bilateral ties.

India's purchases of Russian oil are helping to sustain Moscow's war efforts in Ukraine and it is "most certainly a point of irritation" in New Delhi&rsquo;s relationship with Washington, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday.
"Look, global trade &ndash; India is an ally. It&rsquo;s a strategic partner. Like anything in foreign policy, you&rsquo;re not going to align 100 per cent of the time on everything,&rdquo; Rubio said in an interview with Fox Radio.
Rubio was responding to a question on President Donald Trump&rsquo;s announcement of the 25 per cent tariff on India and an additional penalty for buying Russian military equipment and energy, and how disappointed Washington is with Delhi because of this.
Rubio acknowledged India has &ldquo;huge energy needs and that includes the ability to buy oil and coal and gas and things that it needs to power its economy like every country does, and it buys it from Russia, because Russian oil is sanctioned and cheap and &ndash; meaning they have to &ndash; in many cases, they&rsquo;re selling it under the global price because of the sanctions.&rdquo; He added that "unfortunately, that is helping to sustain the Russian war effort. So it is most certainly a point of irritation in our relationship with India &ndash; not the only point of irritation. We also have many other points of cooperation with them. &nbsp;"But I think what you&rsquo;re seeing the President express is the very clear frustration that with so many other oil vendors available, India continues to buy so much from Russia, which in essence is helping to fund the war effort&rdquo; and allowing this war to continue in Ukraine.
His comments came a day after Trump announced the imposition of a 25 per cent tariff on all goods coming from India starting August 1, plus an unspecified penalty for buying Russian crude oil and military equipment.
Trump's surprise announcement on Wednesday is being seen as a pressure tactic to get New Delhi to agree to demands made by the US, which has, in recent days, got favourable trade deals with major partners like Japan, the UK and the European Union.
India has said it will take all necessary steps to safeguard and promote national interest and that the implications of the tariffs are being examined.&nbsp;
