Activist Manoj Jarange, who has been staging a hunger strike to seek quota for Marathas, on Tuesday said he is ready for talks with the government, but asserted he will not leave Mumbai till his demands are met.
Jarange, whose agitation at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai entered its fifth day, claimed the protesters have not violated any law and said nobody can stop Marathas from entering the state capital.
The activist also asked the Maratha protesters to maintain peace and said he will ensure the government accepts his demand for quota and issues a GR recognising Marathas as Kunbi - an agrarian caste included in the Other Backward Classes category - which will make them eligible for reservation in government jobs and education.
Mumbai Police on Tuesday issued a notice to Jarange and his team, asking them to vacate Azad Maidan at the earliest, saying they violated conditions laid down by the protest.
Earlier, the Bombay High Court on Monday asked his supporters to vacate and clean up all streets in the city by Tuesday noon and restore normalcy.
"I am ready for talks with the government," the 43-year-old activist said on the fifth day of his protest at Azad Maidan.
"I can go to any extent if you also do that. I am not moving out of here till my demands are met. If you try to arrest or evict us from Mumbai, it will be dangerous for you," he warned.
Jarange further said he wants to tell Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that he is not going out of Mumbai.
"I am confident that the high court will give poor Marathas justice. We are following all directives of the high court. There are 4,000 to 5,000 protesters. Give us homes if you wish," he said.
Jarange alleged CM Fadnavis was giving false information to the high court and that he will have to "pay a price".
He said the government should issue a GR saying it is implementing Hyderabad and Satara gazetteers to declare Marathas as Kunbis.
The notification, which extends quota benefits associated with the OBC community to the "sage-soyare" (blood relatives) of eligible Marathas, should also be implemented immediately, Jarange said.

The Shinde government will introduce the Bill at the one-day special session of the Assembly on Tuesday.

The Maharashtra State Socially and Educationally Backward Act 2024 will be reviewed 10 years after the reservation comes into effect.&nbsp;
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led cabinet, earlier, accepted a report by the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission recommending the reservation, after a socioeconomic survey of nearly 2.5 crore families.
One of the key findings in the bill tabled by CM Shinde underscores that the population of the Maratha community in the state is 28 per cent.
Out of the total Maratha families that are below poverty line, 21.22 per cent hold the yellow ration cards. It is higher than the state's average of 17.4 per cent.
The state government's survey undertaken between January and February this year also found that 84 per cent of the Maratha community families do not fall under the progressed category, hence they are eligible for reservation as per the Indra Sawhney case, as per the bill Out of total farmers' suicides in Maharashtra, 94 per cent are from Maratha families, the bill noted.

A 14-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide in Jalna in Maharashtra reportedly seeking reservation for the Maratha community, a police official said on Friday.
She hanged herself in a room in her house in the Someshwar area on Thursday and left behind a chit in which she had purportedly written that the Maratha community must get quota and that "my words must not go waste", the official said.
"The girl was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Police came to know about the incident on Friday morning," he added.
An accidental death report has been registered at Limbgaon police station and further probe was underway, he said.&nbsp;

Pro-Maratha quota protesters block Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway, traffic affected

The police, meanwhile, have beefed up security outside the houses and offices of politicians belonging to the Maratha community in Pune.

Pro-Maratha quota protesters on Tuesday blocked the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway in Pune city of Maharashtra and burnt tyres to press for the demand for reservation, police said.
Members of the Maratha community have been staging protests in different parts of the state seeking reservation in government jobs and education under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.
"A group of protesters blocked the road at Navale bridge on the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway this afternoon, shouted slogans and set seven to eight tyres on fire," an official from Sinhgad Road police station said.
The movement of vehicles was initially stopped in both lanes and was partially restored later, he said.
"We have increased security outside the houses and offices of political leaders belonging to the Maratha community," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) Raja Ramaswami said.
Several organisations held agitations in support of the Maratha quota in different parts of the city.
The Maratha quota agitation has turned violent at several places in the state with protesters vandalising the houses of politicians from the ruling parties in different parts of the state. A curfew has been imposed in Dharashiv district and parts of Beed district after large-scale violence and arson.
Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange has been continuing his indefinite fast in support of the reservation demand at Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district since October 25.

"Whatever political storms come, I will face... I will fight coronavirus too," Thackeray said in a televised public address.
A day after COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra crossed the 10-lakh mark, Thackeray said his government has done effective work to tackle the pandemic.
Speaking in the backdrop of political criticism over demolition of actress Kangana Ranaut's bungalow in Mumbai and the way his government handled the Sushant Singh Rajput death case, Thackeray assured people that he would fight the political crisis too.
"I will have to remove the mask of Chief Minister to respond topolitics. I don't speak doesn't mean I don't have answers," Thackeray said.
Speaking on the state government's "Mission Begin Again" campaign during the pandemic, Thackeray said his administration effectively tackled the COVID-19 situation, cyclones and floods andwill also deal withthe political stormwith people's support.
Thackeray said the pandemic is showing no sign of a respite and the virus is spreading in rural Maharashtra as well. "But the number of patients recovering is also more.
Facts and figures show that if detected early, all patients recover fast," he said.
Asking people not to take the pandemic lightly, he said wearing masks, observing physical distancing, avoiding crowding and face-to-face contact with people is the only option as of now.
"We have slowly started to open up under Mission Begin Again. Some people think they can indulge in politics as part of Mission Begin Again. There is a conspiracy to defame and malign Maharashtra," he said.
He said the state government also reached out to the affected people during Nisarga cyclone and the floods in east Vidarbha and provided relief.
"Over 29 lakh farmers have benefited through the farm loan waiver scheme and Rs 700 crore have been disbursed towards relief and rehabilitation of those affected by the Nisarga cyclone," he said, adding Rs 18 crore have been given as immediate relief for floods in Vidarbha.
Thackeray said his government was doing its best to deal with all challenges.
"We should share our responsibilities to make the "my family, my responsibility" campaign (against coronavirus) which begins on September 15 a success. This war can be won only with people's wholehearted support," he said.
It is not feasible for the government to undertake checkup of each and every one of the 12 crore populace of the state, he said.
The Supreme Court's interim stay on implementation of the Maratha quota was unexpected, Thackeray said.
The Maratha quota bill was unanimously passed by the state legislature and the legal team hired by the previous BJP-led state government was arguing in the apexcourt, he said.
Thackeray appealed to Maratha organisations to refrain from holding protests and demonstrations during the pandemic.
"The government is firmly with the cause of justice to Maratha community and is working on how to proceed ahead. I have spoken to Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis who is in Bihar now and he has assured the BJP's complete support," he said.
A decision on extension of the lockdown would depend on how the people follow the pandemic protocols, he said.
"While using public transport, don't speak, avoid face-to-face contact," he said.
On criticism that he doesn't venture out, Thackeray said , "I have been using technology to reach out to all parts of the state to review the pandemic situation and issue directives."&nbsp;
