Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh pointed out that Aiyar had subsequently apologised "unreservedly" for using the term "alleged invasion" "mistakenly.

Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar's remarks using the word "alleged" for the Chinese invasion in 1962 kicked up a political row late Tuesday with the BJP calling it a "brazen attempt at revisionism".
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh pointed out that Aiyar had subsequently apologised "unreservedly" for using the term "alleged invasion" "mistakenly," and that the party distances itself from the "original phraseology".
Ramesh also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of giving a "clean chit" to the Chinese for their incursions in May 2020.
According to a purported video of an event at the Foreign Correspondents Club this evening, Aiyar, while narrating an anecdote, said, "...In October 1962, the Chinese allegedly invaded India." Later, in a brief statement, Aiyar said, "I unreservedly apologise for having mistakenly used the word 'alleged' before 'Chinese invasion' at the Foreign Correspondents Club this evening." Aiyar, who has stoked controversies in the past with his comments, made the remarks at the launch of the book "Nehru's First Recruits".
BJP's IT department head Amit Malviya slammed the Congress over Aiyar's remarks.
"Mani Shankar Aiyar, speaking at the FCC, during the launch of a book called Nehru's First Recruits, refers to the Chinese invasion in 1962 as 'alleged'. This is a brazen attempt at revisionism," the BJP leader said on X.
"Nehru gave up India's claim on permanent seat at the UNSC in favour of the Chinese, Rahul Gandhi signed a secret MoU, Rajiv Gandhi Foundation accepted funds from the Chinese Embassy and published reports recommending market access for Chinese companies, based on them, Sonia Gandhi's UPA opened up Indian market for Chinese goods, hurting MSMEs and now Congress leader Aiyar wants to whitewash the Chinese invasion, post which the Chinese have been in illegal occupation of 38,000 sq km of Indian territory," he alleged.
What explains "Congress's love for the Chinese?" Malviya asked.
Ramesh, in the wake of the controversy, said, "Allowances must be made for his (Aiyar's) age. The INC distances itself from his original phraseology."
"The Chinese invasion of India that began on October 20 1962 was for REAL. So too were the Chinese incursions in Ladakh in early May 2020 in which 40 of our soldiers were martyred and the status quo disturbed," he said.
"The outgoing PM, however, gave a clean chit publicly to the Chinese on June 19th 2020, seriously weakening our negotiating position. 2000 sq km of territory including Depsang and Demchok remain out of bounds for Indian troops," Ramesh said in a post on X.
He also reposted his old remarks in which he had accused PM Modi of giving a clean chit to China.

Even as Congress tries to untangle itself from Sam Pitroda's remarks on inheritance tax and skin colour of Indians, another party veteran Mani Shankar Aiyar has come under the radar of the ruling BJP for advocating talks with Pakistan.
In an interview given a few months back, but revived recently, Aiyar said that India should focus on engaging in dialogue with Pakistan, instead of threatening them with atom bombs.
"Pakistan is a sovereign nation. Even they have their pride. By respecting them, you should hold tough talks. While maintaining that respect, have as tough talk as you want, but at least talk. But if you are roaming around with a gun in your hand, it will not provide any solution... it will just increase the tension. What will happen to the country if a mad person comes there? They have atom bombs."
"Yes we also have nuclear bomb. But some madman exploded a bomb in Lahore station. Its radioactive rays will reach Amritsar in 8 seconds. By placing such bombs you prevent them from using them. If you talk to Pakistan and start respecting it... our neighbour will not think about the bomb. But if you reject them then if some madman comes there he will take out a bomb."
The remarks invited sharp retort from the BJP.
"At this time Pakistan is collecting foodgrains for itself. They are facing a food crisis...Mani Shankar Aiyar should get himself treated somewhere. This is not the India of Congress. Now, India is very powerful. This is the India of PM Modi," BJP MP Ravi Kishan told ANI news agency.

Congress leader and former union minister Mani Shankar Aiyar said that in the last 10 years all Indians, except closet seculars, have become communal.
Speaking on the theme &lsquo;Memoirs of a Secular Fundamentalist&rsquo; at the 12th Goa Arts and Literature Festival, Aiyar said that India was increasingly becoming non-secular, reports Indian Express newspaper.&nbsp;
&nbsp;&ldquo;Until I was about 75-year-old, all Indians were secular, except for closet communalists. In the last 10 years, all Indians are communal, except for closet seculars. That has been the radical transformation I have seen over my life,&rdquo; he said, adding that the biggest transformation in India he has seen was the rise of communalism.
He also reiterated his earlier view that India should sit with the Pakistan establishment and iron out their differences, instead of engaging in surgical strikes. He said that this was the only way of dealing with the Pakistani government.&nbsp;
&ldquo;If we have disagreements with the government, why do we take it out on the people?&hellip;The only way of dealing with the government of Pakistan is not to have the courage to do surgical strikes on Pakistan or air attacks&hellip;in Balakot, but to have the courage to sit across the table and talk to the Pakistanis. For 10 years, we have not had the courage to (do this)&hellip;,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;The excuse we make is that talks and terror can&rsquo;t go together&hellip;nothing suits the terrorist better than an atmosphere of tension between India and Pakistan,&rdquo; Aiyar added.

Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar sparked a row after he described Pakistanis as the biggest asset of India.
&ldquo;The Pakistanis, from my experience, have been the people who react perhaps overreact to the other side. If we are friendly, they are overfriendly and if we are hostile, they get over hostile&hellip;I have never been to a country where I was been welcomed with such open arms as I was in Pakistan," Aiyar reportedly said at an event in Paksitan's Lahore.
He also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policy towards Pakistan, saying that he doesn't have the courage to hold talks with the neighbour, reports Pakistan daily Dawn.
There were five Indian high commissioners who served in the Congress government and the BJP government in Islamabad and all five of them unanimously agreed that whatever are our differences, we must engage with Pakistan and the biggest mistake that we made in the last 10 years was the refusing dialogue. We have the courage to conduct surgical strikes against you but we don't have the courage to sit across the table and talk," Aiyar said at the event.
He also took potshots at the Indian electoral system saying that Modi represents only one-third of the electorates, while the two-third of Indians are ready to embrace the Pakistanis.
&ldquo;&hellip;So two-thirds of Indians are ready to come towards you (Pakistanis),&rdquo; he was quoted as saying by Dawn.
This isn't the first time that the former MP has been in the limelight for the wrong reasons. He was suspended in 2018 by Congress for calling Modi "neech kism ka aadmi" (vile man).
But nine months later, his suspension was revoked by then Congress president Rahul Gandhi after the recommendation of the disciplinary committee of the party.
