Congress slams Mamata on seat-sharing with TMC in Bengal: 'Don't need her mercy'

Chowdhury, who is the leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said that his party &ldquo;does not need Mamata&rsquo;s mercy&rdquo; over seat-sharing in the state in the upcoming general elections.

&nbsp;Fissures appear to have emerged in the INDIA alliance as its two key allies, the Congress and the Trinamool Congress, on Thursday clashed over seat sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal.
State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, "The grand old party won't beg for seats from the TMC," drawing a response from the Mamata Banerjee-led party, which said, "Badmouthing alliance partners and seat sharing can't go hand in hand." Chowdhury, a staunch critic of the TMC, launched a no-holds-barred attack, accusing Bengal's ruling party of being busy "serving Prime Minister Narendra Modi" rather than strengthening the opposition alliance.
His remarks prompted a sharp reaction from the TMC, which criticised Chowdhury for making "callous remarks" and cautioned the Congress high command to rein in their state president.
Seat sharing between the two parties has been a bone of contention, with media reports suggesting that the TMC is keen to allocate only two seats, a proposition unacceptable to the Congress Bengal unit.
In the 2019 elections, the TMC won 22 seats, the Congress won two (Behrampore and Malda South), and the BJP secured 18.
The war of words, brewing for the past few days, took an ugly turn on Thursday after Chowdhury slammed the TMC for not being serious about allying with the Congress in Bengal.
"The TMC is not serious about strengthening or forging an alliance in Bengal. The TMC is busy pleasing and serving Prime Minister Narendra Modi to protect themselves from the clutches of the CBI and the ED," he told reporters in his constituency.
Referring to media reports that the TMC was willing to part with the two seats won by the Congress in 2019, Chowdhury expressed his displeasure, saying, "Congress is not going to beg before TMC for seats." He added, "The Congress is not going to beg before TMC for seats; we don't need their alms. Who are they to decide how many seats the party will contest? If needed, we will fight on our own; let the party high command take a call on it," highlighting his role in the ongoing CPI(M)-Congress alliance in West Bengal.
Congress MP from Malda South Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury had last month claimed that he had learnt from the media that TMC would leave his seat and Berhampore for the party as part of the seat sharing deal.
According to TMC sources, the ruling party in Bengal is inclined to allocate four out of the 42 Lok Sabha seats to Congress. Currently, the Congress holds two seats in West Bengal, both in minority-dominated districts of Malda and Murshidabad.
The TMC leadership strongly criticised Chowdhury and urged the Congress high command to rein him in if they were serious about the alliance.
Senior TMC MP Sougata Roy said, "Badmouthing TMC and our party supremo Mamata Banerjee and alliance can't go hand in hand. The regular insults hurled at us by Chowdhury and some leaders of the Bengal Congress have to stop if the party wants an alliance. The Congress high command must rein in Adhir Chowdhury if they want an alliance in Bengal." Roy wondered what prompted Chowdhury to make such remarks, saying, "Who told him that we have offered two seats? Our leader Mamata Banerjee has said that in Bengal, TMC will lead the fight, but across the country, it will be the INDIA alliance that will fight against the BJP." During the December 19 INDIA opposition bloc meeting, the TMC set a December 31 deadline for finalising the seat-sharing agreement, a demand that remains unmet.
The political landscape shifted notably when Mamata Banerjee, just ahead of the opposition bloc meeting, expressed confidence in a three-way alliance involving the TMC, Congress, and the Left.
However, within a few days, Banerjee accused the CPI(M) and Congress of colluding with the BJP in West Bengal, asserting that the TMC would lead the battle against the saffron camp in Bengal during the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, while the INDIA bloc would spearhead the fight nationwide.
Both parties have previously fought elections in alliance, including the 2001 assembly polls, 2009 Lok Sabha elections, and 2011 assembly polls. In 2011, the Congress-TMC alliance defeated the 34-year-old Left Front regime in West Bengal.
The history of their alliance has been marked by discontent, with Congress accusing the TMC of depriving them of legitimate seats in previous elections.&nbsp;

During a crucial meeting of the INDIA bloc in Delhi, West Bengal chief minister reportedly proposed the name of Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge as the opposition amalgam's Prime Ministerial face.&nbsp;
NDTV reported quoting sources that the Congress chief politiely declined the offer. Kharge said the opposition will first unite to bring majority, even as he neither confirmed nor denied about the proposal.
On December 17, the Trinamool Congress chief had told the media that INDIA bloc will decide on the Prime Minister face after the 2024 election results. &nbsp;
A crucial meeting of the opposition INDIA bloc began in the national capital on Tuesday where top leaders were discussing the way forward, including seat-sharing, for taking on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

"The leaders asserted that they will continue to fight against the tyranny of this government," a source said.

The opposition leaders deliberated on a blueprint for a joint campaign, seat-sharing arrangement and redrawing their strategy after the Congress suffered a setback in the recent assembly polls, where BJP won in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Evolving a "core positive agenda" will also be among the main challenges before the INDIA bloc.
Sharing a video on X, the Congress said senior leaders including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and former party chief Rahul Gandhi were present at the meeting of INDIA alliance in Delhi.
"Today democracy is being mercilessly murdered by the Modi government. Representatives who raise public voice are suspended from the House. In such an adverse situation, our unity is our strength and this resolve to protect democracy is our energy," the party said in a post on X.

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has triggered yet another storm by naming the next vice-chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University (RBU), even as a bill nominating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, with whose government he shares an acrimonious relation, as the chancellor of the state-run varsities awaits his mandatory nod. The governor is the current chancellor of the state-run universities by dint of his office and the term of the current RBU vice-chancellor Sabyasachi Basu Roy Choudhury is set to be over soon.
Dhankhar has appointed Mahua Mukherjee, professor in the department of dance of RBU as its next vice-chancellor.
He tweeted on Thursday that he has appointed Mukherjee as the next VC in terms of section 9(1)(b) of the Rabindra Bharati Act, 1981.
The governor also attached a recommendation of the government search committee for the post and said that he was choosing Mukherjee, whose name topped the list. Reacting strongly, TMC state spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "The governor has once again proved he does not believe in democratic principles and federalism." "While his consent is awaited for the bill passed by West Bengal Assembly appointing the chief minister as chancellor of the state universities, the hon'ble governor hastily announced a name as the VC of RBU. He did not bother to take into confidence the education minister and chief minister before the announcement. He is exceeding his brief," Ghosh said.

 West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday wrote to opposition leaders, requesting them to attend a meeting convened by her on June 15 in New Delhi to prepare a joint strategy for the upcoming presidential poll.
Banerjee sent a letter to 22 opposition leaders, including Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury.
She said the Presidential election provides the perfect opportunity for all progressive opposition parties to deliberate on the future course of national politics when the divisive forces are plaguing the country.
"Our hon'ble chairperson @MamataOfficial calls upon all progressive opposition forces to meet and deliberate on the future course of action keeping the Presidential election in sight, at the Constitution Club, New Delhi on June 15 2022 at 3 PM," Banerjee's Trinamool Congress said.
Banerjee has reached out to the opposition CMs and leaders to participate in the joint meeting in the national capital, according to a statement issued by her party.
"With the Presidential election around the corner, Hon'ble CM of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, with an initiative of strong & effective opposition against the divisive forces, has reached out to the opposition CMs and leaders to participate in a joint meeting," it said.
Poll for the President of India will be held on July 18, the Election Commission announced on Thursday, with 4,809 members of the electoral college comprising MPs and MLAs set to elect the successor to incumbent Ram Nath Kovind.
Banerjee, in her letter, said a nation with a robust democratic character requires a strong and effective opposition, and all progressive parties need to come together to resist the divisive forces that are plaguing the country.
"Opposition leaders are being deliberately targeted by different central agencies, the country's image is maligned internationally and bitter dissensions are created within. It is time we strengthen our resistance," she said in the letter.
Banerjee also said, "The election is monumental because it gives legislators the opportunity to participate in deciding the Head of our State who is the custodian of our democracy. At a time when our democracy is going through troubling times, I believe that a fruitful confluence of opposition voices is the need of the hour; to echo the deprived and unrepresented communities." The development came a day after senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge consulted with Banerjee and leaders of the DMK, CPI, CPI-M and the AAP for putting up a joint opposition candidate.
The BJP, while reacting to Banerjee's call to the opposition parties, said it wouldn't yield any result.

At least 10 persons died in the early hours of Tuesday after their houses caught fire at Rampurhat in Birbhum district, police said.
The incident took place within an hour after the alleged murder of a Trinamool Congress panchayat leader on Monday, DGP Manoj Malaviya told reporters in Kolkata.
Malaviya said seven charred bodies were recovered from one of the burnt houses, while one injured person died in hospital.
&ldquo;The situation is now under control and a police picket has been established in the village since last night. We are investigating how the houses caught fire and whether the incident is related to the death of the panchayat deputy chief of Barshal village,&rdquo; he said.
Asked about claims by some fire brigade officials that 10 bodies were found, the top police officer clarified while seven of them were recovered after the blaze was brought under control, three injured persons were rescued of whom one died in a hospital.
The SDPO and in-charge of Rampurhat police station have been removed from active policing duty, the DGP said.
The state government has set up a special investigation team headed by ADG (CID) Gyanwant Singh, Malaviya said.
The ruling TMC has also sent a three-member MLA team led by minister Firhad Hakim to the spot to take stock of the situation.
The body of Bhadu Sheikh, the TMC panchayat deputy chief of Barshal village, was found in the area on Monday, police had said.

On Tuesday morning, Sangma told reporters that it was a meeting with Mamata Banerjee's political strategist Prashant Kishor that strengthen his belief in the TMC as an effective opposition in the country.

On Tuesday morning, Sangma&nbsp;told reporters that it was a meeting with Mamata Banerjee's political strategist Prashant&nbsp;Kishor&nbsp;that strengthen his belief in the TMC&nbsp;as an effective opposition in the country.&nbsp;
"While looking for options for an opposition space, I ended up meeting my good friend Prashant Kishor-ji, whom we all know, who can make a difference. The West Bengal government has decided to cancel the state-wide lockdown imposed on September 12 after several students appearing for NEET exam expressed their difficulty in travelling to their exam centres.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee&nbsp;tweeted&nbsp;that the state govt earlier decided to have a lockdown on September 11 and September 12 but after requests from students, the government has decided to lift the lockdown.
NEET or National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is scheduled to be conducted across the country on Sunday, September 13. 15.67 lakh candidates have applied for the NEET 2020 examination from all over the country.
Meanwhile, BJP&nbsp;president J P Nadda&nbsp;has hit out at Mamata&nbsp;Banerjee&nbsp;on her govt's appeasement politics over dates of the lockdown.
