Fadnavis said that his opponents failed as he had done "nothing wrong" that could be used to imprison him.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on 24 January 2023 accused a former police chief of Mumbai and the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance of conspiring to put him in jail.
Speaking at an ABP Majha event, Fadnavis said that when Sanjay Pandey was Mumbai police commissioner, he had been told by the then government to frame the BJP leader and slap criminal charges against him.
Fadnavis said that his opponents failed as he had done "nothing wrong" that could be used to imprison him.
The BJP leader also said that he does not hold any personal animosity against Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, who was the chief minister with the support of the Congress and NCP. &ldquo;Uddhav Thackeray completely stopped answering my phone calls. If he did not want to form an alliance (with BJP after 2019 state polls), he should have told me so,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;At a function recently, I met &lsquo;wahini&rsquo; (Uddhav&rsquo;s wife Rashmi Thackeray) and told her to convey my regards to Uddhav Thackeray. This is the culture of Maharashtra and I cannot disregard it,&rdquo; he said.
Soon after the fall of the MVA government, Pandey, a 1986-batch retired Indian Police Officer, was arrested in connection with a money laundering case linked to the alleged illegal phone tapping of NSE employees. He is currently out on bail.

The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi's (MVA) 'Halla Bol' protest march against the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government over various issues began here on Saturday.
The foot march, which began from a company near J J Hospital at Byculla around noon, will conclude at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in south Mumbai.
The protest has been organised to target the Eknath Shinde-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state on issues including the "insult" of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and social reformers Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule by Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and others through their remarks; the Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute and projects from the state being shifted elsewhere.
The MVA protest is being seen as an attempt to rally the allies after the Uddhav Thackeray-led alliance government was toppled in June this year.

Leaders and workers of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress had started gathering near the J J Hospital since morning. When the march started around noon, they were seen carrying banners, placards and images of Shivaji Maharaj and the Phules.
Talking to reporters before the march, senior NCP leader Sunil Tatkare said Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has insulted Maharashtra by staking claim to some parts of the state, even as the Shinde government has chosen not to react.
To counter the MVA's march, the BJP is also holding "Maafi Mango" protests in all the six parliamentary constituencies of Mumbai, accusing Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut of creating a controversy over the birthplace of Dr B R Ambedkar, and party leader Sushma Andhare of insulting Hindu deities and saints.
The BJP has demanded an apology from the MVA leaders, especially Uddhav Thackeray.
State Congress president Nana Patole said, "People's anger against the government will be expressed through the protest march, which is why BJP is indulging in gimmicks to divert the attention." The Thackeray-led faction of the Shiv Sena is locked in a legal battle to claim the bow and arrow election symbol of the party.

Not only the former ally BJP, but even the rebels who ensured the fall of Uddhav Thackeray-led government in Maharashtra repeatedly called the ruling coalition an unholy alliance. The Maha Vikas Aghadi, the formal term, used to describe the alliance between Hindutva-affiliate Shiv Sena and its once bitter opponents Congress and Nationalist Congress Party was formed in during a most unsuspected political churn in India&rsquo;s political history.&nbsp;
Masterminded by PM Modi&rsquo;s political guru Sharad Pawar, the Aghadi, which literally means front, fell flat as a coup within the Sena, outsmarted even one of the shrewdest politicians from the Opposition camp.
<h2>The rise of the MVA</h2>
In October 2019, the BJP - Shiv Sena Alliance fought the Maharashtra Assembly Elections together, and won a comprehensive 161 seats. The NCP and Congress won 54 and 44 seats each. But the Hindutva allies, despite having a majority, failed to form a government as Sena called for a rotational chief minister arrangement. Pages of Sena mouthpiece Saamna carried criticism for incumbent CM Devendra Fadnavis and heaped praise for the Maratha leader Sharad Pawar.
The BJP, which was no longer a smaller partner in the alliance, stuck to its gun. The partnership broke on November 8 of 2019 with Sena leader, who edits Saamna, stating that his Maharashtra-based outfit didn&rsquo;t need BJP to form a government.&nbsp;
4 weeks of political see-saws, parleys and intense speculations culminated in Uddhav, the first person from the Thackeray clan agreeing to take a seat of power. The photographer son and reluctant son of Sena co-founder Bal Thackeray, was to become the 19th chief minister of the Western Indian state, but Devendra Fadnavis had a trick up his sleeve.
Pawar&rsquo;s ambitious nephew Ajit Pawar, a chief minister aspirant, showed up on news wire video feeds taking oath as Fadnavis&rsquo; deputy in the Raj Bhavan. The NCP chief either was unaware of nephew&rsquo;s mutiny or set up a trap for the BJP leader.
The Aghadi moved Supreme Court which ordered a floor test, like Uddhav Fadnavis too didn&rsquo;t take it and quit 80 hours after taking oath. Ajit, as many described him as Pawar&rsquo;s Trojan horse, returned to NCP fold.&nbsp;
Finally, a Thackeray became CM for the first time on November 28, 2019.

<h2>The fall of the MVA</h2>
The Sena adopted a softer stand on the core issue of Hindutva, the so-called unholy alliance had a largely smooth sailing till the Maharashtra Legislative Council polls on 20 June 2022. The BJP got the better of the Aghadi by winning more seats than predicted, as 12 Sena MLAs reportedly cross-voted in favour of the BJP.&nbsp;
Then came the news of senior aide of Uddhav, Eknath Shinde fleeing to BJP-ruled Gujarat with a pack of 11 rebel lawmakers. The message of rebels from a luxury hotel in Surat was explicit: they won&rsquo;t compromise on the Hindutva ideology laid bare by Bala Thackeray. In simple terms, Uddhav&rsquo;s softer Hindutva was unacceptable to them.&nbsp;
Emissaries were sent to placate the rebels; actions were taken but to no avail. Eknath Shinde, who was removed from key legislative post, in response called for patch up with old ally BJP and snapping ties with Congress and the NCP. &nbsp;
Amid an impasse, the rebels moved to a hotel in Assam, and their tribe grew to 40 legislators. Sitting over 2700 kilometers in India&rsquo;s commercial capital, Mumbai, Uddhav realized the patch up was impossible and showed first sign of demitting power. He shifted from the official CM residence in Varsha, to his ancestral home of Matoshree.&nbsp;
However, Aghadi kept the fight going with Deputy Speaker Narahari Zirwal from NCP sending disqualification notices to 16 rebels from the Shinde camp. He was acting on a petition filed by the Sena on June 24. Sitting in Guwahati, Shinde camp moved the apex court seeking to thwart speaker&rsquo;s move. In a reprieve for rebels the court stayed their disqualification, sought responses from all the concerned and scheduled a verdict on July 11.&nbsp;
While the political chess was on, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari was recuperating from coronavirus for much of the play, but as the game moved to the Apex Court, he had recovered from the deadly viral infection. Following the SC disqualification stay, Fadnavis met him in person, sought a floor test which he granted.&nbsp;
The Aghadi moved court which sided with the Governor. The apex court saw no merit in Aghadi&rsquo;s argument that the rebel MLAs who have defected cannot represent the will of the people, and thus a floor test cannot be conducted until the matter of their disqualification is resolved.&nbsp;
944 days after he took oath, Uddhav stepped down as the chief minister.&nbsp;

<h2>What lies next for the Shiv Sena?&nbsp;</h2>
The Sena draws its identity entirely from one family - the Thackerays. Founded by Bala Thackeray as a right-wing, pro-Marathi, and Hindu nationalist movement that birthed a political party, the Shiv Sena was led by the hardline leader for decades.&nbsp;
With Uddhav stating that he will return to Sena Bhavan, the seat of party&rsquo;s power in Dadar, and the rebels also claiming that they will continue to be Shiv Sainiks, an interesting battle over Bala Thackrey&rsquo;s legacy is bound to ensue much like the one that had ensued between Uddhav and his cousin Raj Thackeray when the Hindutva icon had passed away in 2012. &nbsp;

He went onto write that it's the duty of government to work towards de-addiction, but he is saddened to see that it is taking decisions, for financial benefits, that would result in liquor addiction. 
The letter also stated that for the interest of the farmers, State and Central government should guarantee what the poor, ordinary farmers grow in their fields. But, it is conveniently ignored and thus open sale of wine is being allowed. 
'What exactly will the government, which aims to sell 1000 billion liters of wine a year, achieve?' Hazare questioned in the letter. 
Last week, Maharashtra government decided to permit sale of wine at supermarkets and walk-in shops. According to the government, the decision was taken to give a boost to fruit-based wineries which provide additional income to farmers.

Following a request from Shivsena and other party leaders, the President of Retail Traders Welfare Association (FRTWA) said shops will remain shut in Mumbai and adjoining areas till 4 pm.
Meanwhile, BJP MLA, Atul Bhatkhalkar, said that BJP will oppose any attempt to suppress traders, farmers, labourers in the name of the&nbsp;bandh.
According to a report from the Times of India, at least nine BEST buses have been damaged so far by unknown persons by pelting stones in various places.
A senior BEST official said that only four buses are operated across Mumbai and barring this, bus operations are shut across the city
The Mumbai Police has also deployed the maximum manpower from their end on the streets today to prevent any unwarranted incident.

PTI,&nbsp;New Delhi: The Shiv Sena on Thursday came out in support of the Centre's move to drop Question Hour from the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, and said the decision was taken due to an "emergency situation" caused by the pandemic, which everyone needs to understand.
Talking to reporters, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said that other platforms to question the government are always available.
According to the notifications issued by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats, there will be no Question Hour and private members' bills will not be taken up in the monsoon session, while the Zero Hour will be restricted.
"Even though the monsoon session of Parliament will not have a Question Hour, it is important to understand why it is so," Raut said.
"This is an emergency situation. We need to understand and not criticise," he said, adding that even in Maharashtra the monsoon session of the state assembly will be held for two days only.
Several opposition parties have criticised the move to exclude Question hour during the monsoon session, with some leaders accusing the Modi government of trying to "murder the democracy" in the name of the COVID-19 pandemic and of reducing "Parliament to a notice board".
Replying to a question, Raut said that Army chief M M Naravane rushing off to Ladakh shows that the China-India stand-off was serious.
"Even External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had tweeted the situation was worse than 1962," he said.
The Army chief began his two-day visit to Ladakh on Thursday to carry out a comprehensive review of the security situation in the region in view of China's fresh attempts to change status quo along the southern bank of Pangong lake.
Raut criticised the opposition's demand to reopen places of worship in Maharashtra amid the pandemic and made it clear that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government will take appropriate decision at the right time.
"The opposition leaders should not play with peoples' lives. The state government is of the view that this is not the right time to reopen places of worship. The opposition leaders should understand the thought behind the decision and support the government," the Sena MP said.
"Yesterday, the coronavirus numbers in Maharashtra were more than 15,000. The opposition should have patience and think about people's health and well-being first," he added.
"Unlike the Centre, the MVA government doesn't think that COVID-19 is act of God. The state government believes it will have to fight the pandemic on its own," Raut said.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had recently said that the economy has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, which is an 'act of God'.
Raut lambasted Aurangabad MP Imtiaz Jaleel for public agitations seeking reopening of the places of worship.
"His (Jaleel's) Lok Sabha win was an accident due to a three-cornered fight. Next time, such an accident will not happen," he said.
"Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is not happy about the closure of temples and other places of worship. But for the government, people's health is the priority," Raut added.
When asked about the criticism of the state government effecting transfers amid the pandemic, Raut asked, "Is there a rule that a new government shouldn't effect bureaucratic transfers?" On the criticism that Uddhav Thackeray was operating from home during the pandemic, he said, "Narendra Modi and Thackeray function in a similar manner. Even Modi is working from Delhi. Why should the chief minister break the safety protocol? When a chief minister travels, there is crowd." "From where he should work is entirely his call," Raut added.
"State BJP leaders should dare to ask Modi to move out of Delhi and travel in the country," he said.
