Madrassa students in Uttar Pradesh will be taught mathematics and science among other subjects so that they can become "officers" instead of "maulvis", minister Dharampal Singh said on Tuesday, adding that the plan is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision.
The minorities welfare minister also said schools and hospitals will be built by vacating land belonging to the Waqf board, which is currently under illegal occupation.
"Following the prime minister's vision of 'Quran in one hand and laptop in the other' for madrassa students, they will be taught mathematics, general science, social science, Hindi and other subjects so that they can join the Indian Administrative Service and Provincial Civil Services or become engineers and doctors instead of becoming maulvis (clerics) by obtaining 'deen' (religious) teachings," he told reporters after a departmental review meeting here.
Lavishing praise on Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Dharampal said he was turning Uttar Pradesh into "Uttam (better) Pradesh" as envisaged by the prime minister.

The minister said considerable tracts of land belonging to the Waqf board had been illegally occupied, but assured that it will be vacated and used to build schools, hospitals and parks.
The government also has plans to set up one "govansh sthal" (cowshed), capable of accommodating 2,000 to 4,000 cattle, in each of the Assembly constituencies, he said.

Heavy police deployment was made after purported video clips from the incident surfaced.
Earlier in the day, several muslim organisations comdemned the act and sought action against those involved, failing to which the organisations have warned of massive protests.&nbsp;
Sharing the clip on twitter, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief, &nbsp;Asaduddin Owaisi, slammed Karnataka chief <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/politics/k-taka-cm-basavaraj-bommai-welcomes-ban-on-pfi-says-it-is-an-embodiment-of-simmi-kfd-1664341108909">minister Basavaraj Bommai government</a> over the incident. Owaisi accused the ruling party of promoting such incidents to &ldquo;demean Muslims".
The situation in the area is said to be under control, ANI said, quoting additional SP Mahesh Meghannavar.&nbsp;

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh ADG Prashant Kumar claimed that Siddiqui, one of the biggest clerics from western Uttar Pradesh, not only funded and oversaw conversion activities but also used his trust to fund madrasas involved in unlawful conversion.
In a statement, the ATS said Siddiqui runs Jamia Imam Waliullah trust that funds several madrassas for which he received huge foreign funding. The opposition MLAs walked out after their demand to send the legislation to the Select Committee for &ldquo;proper discussion&rdquo; was rejected. The bill scraps government funding for madrassas, and they will be converted to general schools by April 1, 2021. Under the bill, the State Madrassa Education Board will also be disbanded, but it will have no bearing on status of allowances and service conditions of the teaching and non-teaching staff. Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated the government would soon introduce another bill to regulate private madrassas as well. However, Wednesday's bill did not cover, or even mention Sanskrit tols (centres of Vedic education), which the govt had earlier said would also be shut as the government cannot fund religious education because it is a &ldquo;secular entity&rdquo;.
