The Madras High Court on Monday directed the concerned authorities to drop all the cases registered against the protestors involved in the anti-Sterlite agitation in May, 2018. 13 people were killed during the clashes in which the police allegedly opened fire on the protestors.
The bench consisting of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice T S Sivagnanam orally observed that firing upon the innocent public was a scar on Indian democracy and it should not be forgotten.
The protest might not have been legal or legitimate, but citizens could not be fired at on behalf of a corporate body, the court observed. It further said, the State should ensure that this kind of an incident does not happen again.
The hearing for the case has been adjourned till October 25.

Stop glorifying NEET suicides: Madras HC to politicians, media

The Madras High Court has come down hard on political parties and the media after medical aspirants committed suicide due to Centre's refusal&nbsp;to postpone the&nbsp;National Eligibility Entrance Test. The High Court said that politicians and media need to stop glorifying these suicides. The bench said that if politicians stop giving compensation to the families then such suicides may reduce. The bench was hearing a petition asking the court to initiate suo&nbsp;moto&nbsp;contempt case against the Tamil Nadu&nbsp;govt for failing to prevent student suicides. In 2018, the Madras HC had ordered the state govt to take steps to prevent NEET-related suicides.&nbsp;
