Uttar Pradesh has administered 1.58 crore doses of lumpy virus vaccine &ndash; claimed to be the highest in the country &ndash; to its cattle in less than two months, officials said on Wednesday.
The initiative has controlled the spread of the virus to the extent that it is as good as eliminated from the state, they said, even as cattle in different parts of the country continue to become infected by it.
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had formed a unit, called &lsquo;Team-9,&rsquo; in the first week of August, taking serious note of the skin infection in cattle in other states, for an effective vaccination campaign.
Under the operation, several officers of the team visited Bareilly, Moradabad, Meerut, Saharanpur, Agra, and Aligarh divisions of the state.
The government was also supported in its campaign by an active cooperation of students of veterinary science colleges and private vaccination workers.
The process of vaccination was started with 25 affected districts of Paschimanchal (Western UP) of the state.
It was started with the creation of a 320 km-long and 10 km-wide vaccination belt between Pilibhit and Etawah, to contain the spread of the virus from Paschimanchal (Western UP) to Central and Eastern UP, officials said.
Later, a 155 km vaccination belt was also set up from Etawah to Auraiya, they said.
Initially, a target of 2 lakh vaccines per day was set, which was later increased to 3 to 4 lakh.
The government deployed altogether 2,000 teams and set up 89 dedicated cow medical centres in 26 districts to administer 1.58 crore vaccinations in the state in less than two months, a senior official said.
The government gave priority to vaccination of cattle in the inter-district and inter-state border areas, while also inoculating cattle across the cow shelters and cowsheds on a large scale.
Having tackled districts in the western and central Uttar Pradesh, the vaccination campaign proceeded to protect cattle in Bundelkhand, and then finally to eastern Uttar Pradesh.

In an effort to garner praise from Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi, Maharashtra party chief Nana Patole on Monday resorted to giving bizarre reasons to target the Bharatiya Janata party, saying that the Centre 'deliberately' brought "cheetahs from Nigeria" to spread Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) to take revenge from farmers for rolling back the farm laws.
"This lumpy virus has been prevailing in Nigeria for a long time and the Cheetahs have also been brought from there. The central government has deliberately done this for the losses of farmers," said the Maharashtra Congress chief.
Patole blamed the Centre for the spread of Lumpy Skin Disease and said, "Sonia Gandhi must give Nobel Award to Patole for his statement." But infact eight cheetahs were brought to Gwalior from Namibia in a special plane as part of the cheetah reintroduction programme.
Nana Patole talking to ANI on phone said, "PM has never spoken to the farmers during the black laws (farm laws) which they rolled back, and by bringing cheetahs from Namibia they are taking the revenge.

A viral disease has killed nearly 100,000 cows and buffaloes in India and sickened over 2 million more.
The outbreak has triggered devastating income losses for cattle farmers since the disease not only results in deaths but can also lead to decreased milk production, emaciated animals, and birth issues.
The disease, called lumpy skin disease, is spread by insects that feed on blood like mosquitoes and ticks.
Infected cows and buffaloes get fevers and develop lumps on their skin.
Farmers have experienced severe losses from extreme weather events over the past year: a record-shattering heat wave in India reduced wheat yields in April, insufficient rainfall in eastern states like Jharkhand state shriveled parched winter crops such as pulses, and an unusually intense September rainfall has damaged rice in the north.
And now, the virus has spread to at least 15 states with the number of cow and buffalo deaths nearly doubling in three weeks, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.
The contagion spreading among cattle is having a disproportionate impact on small farmers, many of whom have insulated themselves from the shocks of climate change by rearing cattle for milk, said Devinder Sharma, an agriculture policy expert in northern Chandigarh city.
“It's a serious, serious issue and this (disease) has been a growing,” he said, adding that the government figures were likely an undercount of the actual death toll from the disease.
The first cases in South Asia were detected in 2019, and it has since spread to India, China, and Nepal.
It was first recorded in Zambia in 1929 and has extended through Africa and more recently to parts of Europe.

Joint Director Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI)  Ashok Kumar Mohanty, has assured that the milk from the lumpy skin disease virus LPD diseases affected, is safe for human consumption and there is no chance of it transmitting to humans.To understand the claim, let's understand what LPD actually is. lumpy skin disease is a viral infection caused by lumpy skin disease virus (LPSV). The viral disease is spread by blood-sucking parasites, which include mosquitos, flies and lice.As per a study by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), LPD causes fever and nodules on the skin and there is a high death rate in areas where animals have not any exposure to the virus.While assuring the public that the milk is safe and no threat to humans, IVRI Joint Director Ashok Kumar Mohanty, told PTI, that the disease is "non-zoonotic" and "not transmissible" to humans. and so, milk from the affected cattle is safe to drink.
He further said that the milk is safe if you have it boiled or without boiling.
As the officials said declared the milk from the affected animals safe, they have never raised concerns regarding the milk production affected by the disease. The official said that the milk production from the affected may decrease, depending on the severity of the disease.
Of many states Rajasthan is severely affected by the disease, as per official details, Rajasthan has seen 51000 animal deaths and 11 lakh nimals have been affected by this disease.
To contain the disease Indian government has launched massive vaccination, Ashok Kumar Mohanty, told PTI,  'goat pox' vaccines are being administered to the animals in the states to stop the spread of the disease, however, a new vaccination has been made, to contain this disease, which is waiting for the regulatory approval.
According to the Animal Husbandry Department data, the disease has so far affected 16.42 lakh cattle in 197 districts and has killed 75,000 cattle between July and September 11, 2022,

16.42 lakh cattle were afflicted and 75,000 killed by Lumpy disease in India between July and September 11, 2022, according the govt data.&nbsp;
Rajasthan is worst affected. As per official details, the state has seen 51,000 animal deaths and 11 lakh animals have been affected by this disease.
Lumpy disease is a contagious viral disease that affects cattle and causes fever, nodules on the skin and can also lead to death. The disease gets spread by mosquitoes, flies, lice, and wasps by direct contact among the cattle, and through contaminated food and water
The disease is caused by a non-zoonotic virus which means it cannot be transmitted from animals to humans.&nbsp;
The spread of the virus in the cattle has raised questions about the quality of milk and if it is safe to consume.&nbsp;
Director of Indian Veterinary Research Institute Ashok Kumar Mohanty, has assured that the milk from lumpy skin disease affected animals is safe for human consumption as the infection is not transmissible to humans.&nbsp;
He further said that the milk is safe with or without boiling.
Mohanty did, however, say milk production in the infected cattle gets affected depending on the severity of the disease and immunity level of the animal. He said when cattle are infected, the animals become weak due to nodule formation, fever and other symptoms and that severely affects milk production.
If cattle are infected for the first time and not vaccinated, then milk production can get reduced up to 40-50 per cent, he added.
Currently, 'goat pox' vaccines are being administered to the animals to stop the spread of the disease, however, a new vaccination that has to be made specifically for Lumpy disease is waiting for the regulatory approval.
