Four arrested in Lulu mall namaz video case after UP CM orders ‘strict action’

Four persons were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the video circulated online of a group of men offering namaz inside the newly opened Lulu Mall in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The arrests were made for offering prayers in an ‘unauthorised manner’ and on charges of promoting enmity between groups.

As per police, preliminary investigation suggests that there was &ldquo;no motive&rdquo; behind their act.

The arrests were made for offering prayers in an &lsquo;unauthorised manner&rsquo; and on charges of promoting enmity between groups, according to police.
The police action came a day after UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath rebuked the local administration and directed them to take &ldquo;strict action against miscreants who create nuisance and try to vitiate the atmosphere, saying the venue has been turned into a &ldquo;political hotbed&rdquo;.
The four arrested have been identified as Lucknow residents Mohammad Rehan and Atif Khan, and Sitapur residents Mohammad Lokman and Mohammad Noman. As per police, preliminary investigation suggests that there was &ldquo;no motive&rdquo; behind their act.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway to nab four other suspects in the case.
The viral video triggered a major controversy with a social media campaign being launched against the mall. The mall management was accused of hiring mostly members of the Muslim community from outside the state to which they responded by issuing a statement clarifying that &ldquo;over 80 percent&rdquo; of its staff are Hindus. The mall authorities also registered a case over the incident against unidentified persons, after the namaz video went viral.

On Sunday, two people were arrested after they entered the mall and began chanting &lsquo;Hanuman Chalisa&rsquo;. Their arrest was followed by the detention of at least 15 members of a right-wing group for creating chaos while attempting to enter the shopping mall but were eventually let off with a warning.
The mall was inaugurated by the Chief Minister on July 10.

Lulu Mall row: Yogi Adityanath says deal with miscreants strictly

The chief minister said unscrupulous elements issuing "mischievous statements" and trying to vitiate the atmosphere should be dealt with strictly.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday asked the Lucknow administration to take the ongoing controversy related to the newly-opened Lulu mall &ldquo;very seriously&rdquo;.
&ldquo;The Lulu mall that is carrying out business activities has been turned into a political hotbed. Unnecessary statements are being made by certain people. Demonstrations are being organised to obstruct the movement of the people visiting the mall," Yogi said.
He said roads are for people to commute and no religious activity should be allowed to hinder traffic movement.
Adityanath asked officials to ensure that there is no display of fire arms in religious yatras and processions, and issued directives to establish health posts on the Kanwar Yatra routes.
He was addressing senior officials of the state via video-conferencing, an official spokesperson said.

"Roads are for people to commute. No religious programmes should be allowed to hinder the traffic. Clear directives have been issued in this regard, and it should be strictly followed with zero tolerance," the chief minister said.
"During the month of Shravan, there will be crowd in Shiva temples. To deal with the situation, talks should be held with the temple managements," he added.
The chief minister said unscrupulous elements issuing "mischievous statements" and trying to vitiate the atmosphere should be dealt with strictly.
"Such people have no place in civilised society," he said, and asked senior officials to have a dialogue with religious leaders and intellectuals of their areas and take support of the media to maintain peace.
Talks are of great importance in a democracy, and using this, the state government succeeded in removing loudspeakers installed unnecessarily, Adityanath said.
He said that for night stay of Kanwariyas, security and public convenience should be kept in mind and foot-patrolling done. Police helpline 112 should remain active, Adityanath said.
