Liverpool's Colombian football player Luis Diaz was reunited on Tuesday with his father for the first time since he was freed by National Liberation Army guerrillas after being held hostage for 12 days in a mountainous area of Colombia.

With the message "Welcome home Luchooo!", the Colombian Football Federation announced Diaz's arrival in Barranquilla, where the Colombian national team will play against Brazil on Thursday in the fifth round of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
Diaz's parents were kidnapped in late October in Barrancas, a small town in the northeastern department of La Guajira, when they were at a gas station and intercepted by armed men on motorcycles.
His mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was released hours later.
Diaz Jimenez was released on Thursday in the vicinity of the Serrania del Perij&aacute;, a mountainous area of difficult access on the border between Colombia and Venezuela, from where he left aboard a helicopter with intermediaries from the United Nations and the Catholic Church.
The kidnapping of Diaz Jimenez left the peace negotiations between the Colombian government and the ELN in a critical state and opened the debate about the guerrillas' willingness to dialogue.
The government has demanded that they commit to cease kidnappings and release those who remain in captivity, an issue that will be a priority for the next round of talks.
The ELN justified the kidnappings on Sunday as a way of financing itself, which it had not renounced in the midst of the peace talks, and claimed that its organization "is poor like the majority of Colombians."

The release by members of the National Liberation Army, or ELN &mdash; which has called the kidnapping a mistake &mdash; was announced by the government delegation that currently is in peace negotiations with the guerrilla group.

The 26-year-old striker is one of the most talented players on Colombia&rsquo;s national team. He joined Liverpool in a deal worth $67 million.

Diaz had missed Liverpool&rsquo;s last two games but trained since Thursday and was selected on the bench for the match at Kenilworth Road. He entered the game in the 83rd and scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw for his team.
After scoring the goal, he revealed a T-shirt with the words &ldquo;Libertad Para Papa&rdquo;, meaning "Freedom For Father" after the goal.
Diaz followed that up with a post on Instagram later Sunday.
It read: &ldquo;Today the footballer is not speaking to you. Today Lucho Diaz, the son of Luis Manuel Diaz, is speaking to you. Mane, my dad, is a tireless worker, a pillar in the family and he has been kidnapped. I ask the ELN for the prompt release of my father, and I ask international organizations to work together for his freedom.
&ldquo;Every second, every minute, our anguish grows. My mother, my brothers and I are desperate, distressed and without words to describe what we are feeling. This suffering will only end when we have him back home. I beg you to release him immediately, respecting his integrity and ending this painful wait as soon as possible."
Both of Diaz&rsquo;s parents were kidnapped in the small Colombian town of Barrancas last weekend, though his mother was rescued within hours by police. Colombia&rsquo;s government said Thursday that the guerrilla group National Liberation Army, known as ELN, was responsible for the kidnapping.
&ldquo;At the training ground he was fine, on the pitch he was fine, so that&rsquo;s why he is here,&rdquo; Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had said about his player ahead of the game.
&ldquo;All the signs he gets, as far as I understand, are very positive,&rdquo; Klopp said about the situation regarding Diaz&rsquo;s father. &ldquo;Negotiations are ongoing but still positive and that&rsquo;s why (Diaz) wanted to be part of the team.&rdquo;
