Four people were killed after a pickup vehicle fell into the Sirhind canal near Jagera bridge in Punjab's Ludhiana district, police said.
The incident took place on Sunday night when a group of around 25 devotees was returning after paying obeisance at Mata Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh.
The dead included two children, a police official told reporters in Ludhiana.
Police said that the van plunged into the canal when its driver lost control while overtaking another vehicle at the bank of the canal.
Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain and Senior Superintendent of Police Jyoti Yadav rushed to the spot and supervised the rescue operation.
Most of the devotees were saved and were taken to nearby hospitals. However, three are still missing, according to officials.
The deputy commissioner said four bodies have been recovered so far.&nbsp;

Parties conclude intense campaigning in Ludhiana West bypoll, key for Punjab ahead of 2024 elections.

Campaigning for the bypoll to the Ludhiana West assembly segment in Punjab came to an end on Tuesday evening with the major parties - AAP, Congress, BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal - making last-ditch efforts to mobilise support for their respective candidates.
Hours before the campaigning ended at 6 pm, political leaders intensified canvassing to woo voters of the urban constituency of Punjab's industrial hub.
The Ludhiana West assembly seat fell vacant following the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January.
Polling will be held from 7 am till 6 pm on June 19 and the counting will be held on June 23.
There are a total of 14 candidates in the fray for the by-election. A total of 1.74 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise, 84,825 of them women and 10 of third gender.
There will be a total of 194 polling stations for the bypoll and 100 percent live webcasting of polling stations, officials said.
The ruling AAP has fielded Rajya Sabha member Sanjeev Arora for the bypoll.
Arora (61) is a Ludhiana-based industrialist and is also known for his social welfare work. He runs the Krishna Pran Breast Cancer Charitable Trust. Arora has been a member of the Rajya Sabha since 2022.
The AAP took out a roadshow during the day in support of Arora. It was led by the party's Punjab in-charge and former deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia. Punjab AAP president Aman Arora and Sanjeev Arora were also part of it.
Sisodia urged voters to vote for the party candidate in the bypoll. "AAP is committed to transforming Ludhiana West into a model constituency. By voting for Sanjeev Arora, you will ensure progress and clean governance for your constituency." The opposition party Congress has placed its bet on former minister and Punjab Congress working president Bharat Bhushan Ashu (51).
Ashu had remained MLA twice from this seat in 2012 and 2017. He was defeated by Gogi by a margin of 7,512 votes in the 2022 Punjab assembly polls. Ashu had remained food and civil supplies minister in the previous Congress regime.
The BJP has field party's senior leader Jiwan Gupta. He is a member of the core committee of Punjab BJP. He had earlier remained the party's state general secretary.
The SAD named Parupkar Singh Ghuman as its candidate for the bypoll. Ghuman is a lawyer and the former president of Ludhiana bar association.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, along with AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal aggressively campaigned in favour of party nominee Arora.
They urged voters to vote for Arora with Kejriwal announcing that the AAP candidate will be made the cabinet minister if he is elected in the bypoll.
Mann described the election as a battle between "humility" and "arrogance" while highlighting that Arora represents "simplicity" while the Congress nominee is known for "arrogance." During canvassing, Mann said the bypoll is a clear choice between "pyaar (love) and 'hankaar' (arrogance)." Kejriwal lauded Arora for his philanthropic efforts, mentioning his role in raising Rs 16 crore for a child struggling with a rare disease in Delhi, and assured the public that with Arora's election, Ludhiana West would witness "unparalleled development." The Ludhiana West bypoll is seen as a litmus test for Mann and the ruling party's national leadership which has been aggressively campaigning to retain this seat.
In November last year, the AAP had won three out of four assembly bypolls.
Prior to that the party had party faced a drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls in which it could win only three of 13 parliamentary constituencies.
Punjab Congress leaders including party's general secretary in-charge Punjab and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, former Chief Minister and MP Charanjit Singh Channi, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla, MLAs Rana Gurjit Singh, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Pargat Singh and Aruna Chaudhary campaigned for Ashu.
While Ashu reminded voters of the previous record of development in the constituency, he said that his electoral fight was not against Arora, but Kejriwal, who was allegedly fighting for his own backdoor entry to Rajya Sabha from Punjab.
Prestige is at stake for the BJP in the bypoll as well. Leaders including Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, BJP leader Tarun Chugh, former union minister Anurag Thakur and Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar canvassed for Gupta.
Delhi Chief Minister Gupta during the poll campaign alleged that Bhagwant Mann is just a "mukhota" (mask) as the Punjab government is being run by the leaders of the AAP who have been "rejected" by people of the national capital.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, BJP's Ravneet Singh Bittu had led from the Ludhiana West assembly segment, which is part of the Ludhiana parliamentary seat. However, he lost to Congress nominee Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.
The Ludhiana West bypoll is also going to be a test of the leadership of Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, which is looking to resurrect itself after a series of crushing electoral losses.
Badal, who was elected again as party president in April after he resigned following being declared 'tankhaiya' (guilty of religious misconduct) by the Akal Takht last year, led his party's poll campaign for the party nominee Parupkar Singh Ghuman.
Badal was camping in Ludhiana for poll campaigning and meeting party workers, asking them to put in their best efforts to register victory in the bypoll.
Three rebel leaders - Sohan Singh Thandal, Anil Joshi and Sikander Singh Maluka - recently returned to the party fold with Badal saying the party was witnessing a steady comeback of leaders who left the party for various reasons in the past.
In the 2022 assembly polls, SAD candidate Maheshinder Singh Grewal had lost his security deposit from the Ludhiana West seat.

Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sibin C held a video conference meeting on Monday to review the arrangements for the by-election to the 64-Ludhiana West Assembly Constituency. The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Himanshu Jain, Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, and Returning Officer Rupinder Pal Singh.
During the meeting, the CEO instructed the district officials to exercise heightened vigilance in the final phase of the election process. He emphasized strict surveillance during the last 72, 48, and 24 hours before polling, and until the election process concludes.
Sibin C directed that all outsiders, including &nbsp;political leaders, must vacate the constituency area after the election campaign ends at 6 PM on June 17. He also emphasized strengthening 24x7 surveillance through CCTV to curb illegal distribution or smuggling of liquor, cash, drugs, or other inducements.
The CEO directed that strict action should be taken immediately upon receiving any complaint regarding attempts to influence voters through cash or freebies distribution.
In view of the hot weather, the Chief Electoral Officer instructed officials to ensure adequate facilities for voters at polling stations, including drinking water, 'chhabil', &nbsp;waiting areas, toilets, and sheds. He also urged that voters be encouraged to follow COVID-19 advisory guidelines issued by the Health Department.
Sibin C also reviewed the live webcasting of 100% polling stations for real-time monitoring and took stock of arrangements at polling booths, strong rooms, counting halls, and medical facilities. He directed that any violation of the Model Code of Conduct be dealt with promptly as per the Election Commission's guidelines.
The DC-cum-District Election Officer and Police Commissioner assured the CEO that all preparations for the by-election are complete and the election process will be conducted smoothly in accordance with Election Commission guidelines. They further assured that all directives given in the meeting would be implemented in a timely manner.
The meeting was also attended by Additional CEO Harish Nayar, Joint CEO Sakatar Singh Bal, Election Officer Anju Bala, and other senior officials from the CEO office.
Key Statistics of Voters and Polling Booths:
Sibin C informed us that the total number of registered voters in the Ludhiana West constituency is 1,74,437, &nbsp;comprising 89,602 male voters, 84,825 female voters, and 10 third-gender voters.&nbsp;
For the by-election, a total of 194 polling booths have been set up at 66 locations. These include 10 model polling booths, one all-women-managed booth, one eco-friendly "green" booth, and one booth operated by PWD staff. Additionally, 13 booths have been declared critical, where paramilitary forces will be deployed.
To facilitate senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and voters with medical issues, home voting was conducted, and a total of 239 voters participated in this initiative.
The CEO stated that voting will take place on June 19 from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and counting of votes will begin at 8:00 AM on June 23 at Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, which has been designated as the counting center.&nbsp;
He added that security checkpoints have been established at 54 locations across the constituency, and all activities are being closely monitored by the security forces.

Punjab&rsquo;s Chief Electoral Officer, Sibin C, informed that 64-Ludhiana West constituency have &nbsp;1,73,071 voters. Citizens can file claims and objections regarding the Electoral Roll until April 24, 2025. The final publication of the electoral roll is scheduled for May 5, 2025.&nbsp;
He further stated that, following due diligence and approval from the Election Commission, a total of 192 polling stations have been established across the constituency, all located within urban areas. To ensure accessibility and convenience, arrangements have been made to restrict the number of voters per polling station to no more than 1,200.&nbsp;
CEO Sibin C mentioned that meetings have already been held with representatives of recognized political parties to ensure clarity on Electoral Roll updates and compliance with Election Commission guidelines. Notably, some political parties have already appointed their Booth Level Agents (BLAs), while others are being encouraged to do the same to ensure transparent electoral participation.
Sibin C has urged all political parties to actively participate in the voter awareness and update process. He appealed for their cooperation in assisting voters with filing claims and objections through their BLAs to ensure a robust and inclusive revision process.&nbsp;
The Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab also highlighted about the provision of appeal by electors to the magistrate (DEO) under section 22 or section 23 against the orders of EROs within 15 days of the order with regards to claims and objections and also inclusion of names inadvertently omitted and further to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) level if required as per RP Acts/ Rules.

&nbsp;Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav approved the Rs 528.95 crore project after Ludhiana MP (Rajya Sabha) Sanjiv Arora raised its demand inside and outside the Rajya Sabha.&nbsp;
Arora also met Vaishnav personally to emphasise his demand in the wider interest of Ludhiana and its residents.&nbsp;
The railway station of the city was established in the year 1860 during the British rule. And, since then, this railway station which is also a junction has never undergone any major renovation.
Giving more details about the project on March 5, Arora said that the project has been allotted to a private contractor.&nbsp;
He said that the General Manager of Northern Railway has informed him that the contract value of the project is Rs 472.94 crore. The Letter of Award (LOA) was issued on December 19, 2022 and work began on February 2, 2023.

Emphasizing its significance for Punjab's development, she assured ample funds and instructed the Public Health department to start STP work promptly.

Deputy Commissioner Ludhiana Sakshi Sawhney on Wednesday said that the construction of terminal building at the Halwara International Airport would be completed by March 31, 2024.
During an inspection of the site, Sawhney had detailed discussions with officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), Public Health, Airport Authority of India (AAI), NHAI, and representatives of the contractual company.&nbsp;
She examined the terminal building, construction of internal roads, taxiway, apron, and road widening, parking and others.
Sawhney gave clear instructions to officials to expedite the pace of all works as it is an ambitious project of the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Punjab government and critical to the development of the state.&nbsp;
She added that there was no shortage of funds for development works, and officials must put these works on the fast track. She also directed the Public Health department to start the work of STP immediately as the required space has been identified by PWD.&nbsp;

Furthermore, she asked the contractual company to ensure that the works are moving at a fast pace to adhere to the deadline of March 31.Sawhney said that the airport would further boost economic activities such as industrial development, export, employment, real estate, and others.&nbsp;
She added that it would also facilitate NRIs to remain connected with their families in the motherland while saving their time, money, and energy. Later, she held a meeting with officials of the Indian Airforce Station, Halwara, regarding the project.

A video has circulated on the internet in which a 3-year-old girl can be seen swinging around a glass door of a garment showroom. However, this turned into a tragic accident as the glass door fell on her and she died. This incident took place in Ludhiana.&nbsp;
As per reports, the girl was from Flower Enclave in Basant Avenue. She went to the garment showroom with her parents on Friday, November 24 and at that time, she was playing around the door when it suddenly fell on her.&nbsp;
Police on Sunday reported that as this incident took place, the girl was immediately rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where the doctors declared her dead.&nbsp;
Police said that they will take action after recording the statement of the parents of the girl. As people came across this video, they reacted by saying that it was a bad day. Others reacted to this by saying that this is truly painful.&nbsp;

Eleven people were killed after a gas leak incident in the Giaspura area in Ludhiana on Sunday, police said.
Four more people, who were taken ill, are undergoing treatment at a hospital, they added.
The source of the leakage and the type of the gas are yet to be ascertained, police said, adding that the area has been sealed while a fire brigade and an ambulance have been deployed there.
'In all likelihood, there is some gas contamination which has happened. It is quite likely that maybe some chemical reacted with methane in manholes. All of this is being verified,' Surabhi Malik, Ludhiana's Deputy Commissioner said
A 50-member team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also reached the site.
Police said the casualties comprise five females and six males. Two boys aged 10 and 13 are among the 11 who died in the incident, they said.
As it was a thickly-populated area, the immediate priority was to evacuate people from the place, the official further said.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the incident was very painful and added that all possible help is being provided.

The corpse, almost stripped to the bones by the time it was found, was identified as Guddi Devi by her 12-year-old daughter Payal with help of a necklace found on the body. 
The police said the woman had gone missing six days ago when she left home around 7 pm in the evening to buy vegetables. Guddi Devi was a factory worker and had been living in Ludhiana with her 5 children, the police said. She had moved to the city with children several years back after her relationship with her husband soured. Her husband reportedly lives in Agra. 
The police are suspecting the woman was murdered and are currently waiting for the postmortem report.

Ludhiana gets a special blood bank for dogs

Ludhiana's Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has established a special blood bank for dogs in need.

In a unique initiative, the Ludhiana's Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has established a blood bank for dogs in need.
A total of 25 states had applied for the approval of a blood bank for dogs, however, only two received approval- one in Ludhiana and the other in Chennai, Dr. Shukriti Sharma from GADVASU said.
Over the past few years, the insititute has conducted 125 blood transfusions in dogs up until now.

In a unique initiative, the Ludhiana's Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has established a blood bank for dogs in need.

At the facility, the donated blood is separated into three parts, Red Blood Cells, platelets and plasma, depending on the need.
Over the past few years, the institute&nbsp;has conducted 125 blood transfusions in dogs up until now.
