Gujarat police claim 'love jihad', parade alleged rapist; locals shower rose petals on cops

The police in Gujarat claimed that the man had first raped the survivor when she was 16 and made a video. The accused was arrested from Vasai in Mumbai.&nbsp;

Navsari police in Gujarat on Wednesday paraded a 37-year-old man arrested for allegedly raping and blackmailing a girl for nearly five years.
Asim Nizam Shaikh, a resident of Khergam town of Navsari district, was arrested on Tuesday from Vasai near Mumbai "in a case of love jihad", as per a police statement.
After securing his remand from a court, the police paraded Shaikh through the streets of Khergam and made him apologise to the people.
Local residents shouted "Jai Shree Ram" and showered rose petals on the police personnel. Some women also gave bouquets to the police.
Shaikh allegedly raped the girl for the first time five years ago when she was 16, and recorded a video which he used to blackmail her, police said.
"Love jihad" is a term used by right-wing activists to refer to an alleged conspiracy to convert Hindu girls to Islam by marrying them.
To save himself from getting caught, Shaikh, who is married and has children, forced the victim to marry his accomplice Ronak Patel, police said.
Patel, who was behind bars in a case of murder, came out on parole recently and was yet to be apprehended.
On the victim's complaint, a First Information Report was registered against the duo under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, sections 376(2)(n) and 506(2) of the Indian Penal Code which deal with rape and criminal intimidation, and the Information Technology Act at Khergam police station on June 23.
"Shaikh and Patel went underground after the FIR was registered. We then learnt that Shaikh had reached Mumbai from Jaipur and was staying at a hotel in Vasai. We nabbed him from Vasai on Tuesday and brought him here. A POCSO court here remanded Shaikh in nine-day police custody," said Navsari district Superintendent of Police Rushikesh Upadhyay.
Shaikh, a resident of Khergam, allegedly blackmailed the girl and her family for five years by using the videos he had recorded. He even broke her engagement by sending the videos to her fiance, the SP said.
Navsari police said in their statement that Shaikh was a bootlegger and had 18 cases related to prohibition, assault and illegal money-lending registered against. His father Nizam and three brothers also face criminal cases, said the statement.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Wednesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of indulging in double standards, saying that when the daughters of BJP leaders get married to Muslims, they call it love, but if anybody else does so then it's dubbed as "jihad".
Talking to reporters in Bilaspur town of the state, he also accused the saffron party of trying to take political advantage of last week's communal violence in Biranpur village of Bemetara district.
When asked about the BJP's claims that tension started brewing in Biranpur following some interfaith marriages there, Baghel said, "The BJP neither examined the matter (clash) nor came out with any report before calling for a bandh. A fight between two children led to a clash that claimed the life of a man which is very sad. It cannot be justified. But the BJP is trying to take its political mileage." "They talk about love jihad. If we talk about senior leaders of BJP their daughters have married to Muslims. Doesn't it fall in the category of love jihad? You ask where the daughter of the biggest leader of the BJP in Chhattisgarh has gone. Is that not love jihad? When their daughter does it then it's love but someone else does it, then it is jihad.
"What have they (BJP) done to stop this? They just want to get political benefits from it. They make their son-in-laws minister and MPs and treat others under different laws," he said.
Communal violence had erupted in Biranpur, located 60 km from Bemetara town, on April 8 allegedly after a fight between school children.
A local resident, Bhuneshwar Sahu (22), was killed in the clash and three policemen suffered injuries.
The local administration has imposed section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which bars assembly of four or more people, in the entire Bemetara district.
Three days after the incident, a man identified as Rahim Mohammad (55) and his son Idul Mohammad (35), residents of Biranpur, were found dead with head injuries a few kms away from the village.

All roads leading to the village have been barricaded by the police. Around 1,000 police personnel have been deployed in the village and around it to maintain law and order.
CM Baghel on Tuesday announced to give government job to the kin of the deceased Sahu and also financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the family.

Police on Wednesday registered a case against firebrand BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur for her alleged inflammatory speech at a convention organised recently by a pro-Hindu outfit.
The case has been registered at the Kote police station, based on a complaint by Shivamogga District Congress Committee president H S Sundaresh, officials said.
According to police, the case has been registered against the Bhopal MP under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion, race) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs).

Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Nitesh Rane has said he along with members of the Sakal Hindu Samaj have asked the Maharashtra government to enact a law in the state against "love jihad" and religious conversion.
Speaking to reporters in the state legislature complex in Nagpur on Wednesday, Rane said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis have assured to bring such a law soon in the state.
"Love jihad" is a term often used by right-wing activists to allege a ploy by Muslim men to lure Hindu women into religious conversion through marriage Rane said he along with women representatives of the Sakal Hindu Samaj met Chief Minister Shinde and Deputy CM Fadnavis, demanding a law against "love jihad" and religious conversion in Maharashtra, on the lines of Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and other states.
"The chief minister and the deputy CM have taken our demands seriously and assured to bring a law soon in the state," he said.
Rane said the Sakal Hindu Samaj has been taking out morchas in every district of Maharashtra, demanding a strict law against "love jihad" and religious conversion.

Notably, Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Girish Mahajan recently alleged the death of actor Tunisha Sharma last week was a matter of "love jihad" and that the state was planning to bring a strict law to curb such incidents.

Citing recent media reports of harassment of inter-faith couples, the officers have demanded that the "illegal ordinance be withdrawn forthwith". The anti-conversion ordinance is being used as a stick to victimise especially those Indian men who are Muslim and women who dare to exercise their freedom of choice," they added.

The Nitish Kumar's party on Sunday asserted that the so-called 'love jihad' laws will create social hatred and division in the society which it does not approve of.
"An atmosphere of hatred and division is being created in the society in the name of Love Jihad," senior party leader KC Tyagi told reporters after the party's national executive meeting here.
The term "love jihad" is used by right-wing activists to refer to the alleged campaign of Muslims forcing Hindu girls to convert in the guise of love.
"Provisions of the Constitution and CrPC give freedom to two adults to choose life partners of their choice irrespective of one's religion, caste or region," Tyagi said.
The Cabinet in BJP governed Madhya Pradesh on Saturday passed a Bill which provides for prison term of up to 10 years and fine of Rs 1 lakh for conversion through marriage or by any other fraudulent means.
The bill in some ways is similar to an Ordinance notified by the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh last month.
