"I have declared a local emergency and issued a curfew for downtown Los Angeles to stop the vandalism, to stop the looting," Mayor Karen Bass told reporters.
One square mile (2.5 square kilometers) of the city's more-than-500 square mile area will be off-limits until 6am (1300 GMT) for everyone apart from residents, journalists and emergency services, she added.
One protester told AFP the arrest of migrants in a city with large foreign-born and Latino populations was the root of the unrest.
"I think that obviously they're doing it for safety," she said of the curfew.
"But I don't think that part of the problem is the peaceful protests. It's whatever else is happening on the other side that is inciting violence."
Small-scale and largely peaceful protests -- marred by eye-catching acts of violence -- began Friday in Los Angeles as anger swelled over ramped up arrests by immigration authorities.
At their largest, a few thousand people have taken to the streets, but smaller mobs have used the cover of darkness to set fires, daub graffiti and smash windows.
Overnight Monday 23 businesses were looted, police said, adding that more than 500 people had been arrested over recent days.
Protests have also sprung up in cities around the country, including New York, Atlanta, Chicago and San Francisco.
- 'Provide protection' -
Trump has ordered 4,000 National Guard to Los Angeles, along with 700 active-duty Marines, in what he has claimed is a necessary escalation to take back control -- despite the insistence of local law enforcement that they could handle matters.
A military spokeswoman said the soldiers were expected to be on the streets later Tuesday or some time on Wednesday.
Their mission will be to guard federal facilities and to accompany "federal officers in immigration enforcement operations in order to provide protection."
Demonstrators told AFP the soldiers "should be respected" because they hadn't chosen to be in LA, but Lisa Orman blasted it as "ridiculous."
"I was here for the Dodger parade," she said referring to the LA team's World Series victory.
"It was 100 times bigger. So the idea that the Marines here, it's a big show. The president wants a big show."
The Pentagon said the deployment would cost US taxpayers $134 million.
Photographs issued by the Marine Corps showed men in combat fatigues using riot shields to practice crowd control techniques at the Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach.

Two dozen miles (40 kilometers) north, the sprawling city of Los Angeles spent the day much as it usually does: tourists thronged Hollywood Boulevard, tens of thousands of children went to school and commuter traffic choked the streets.
But at a military base in North Carolina, Trump was painting a much darker picture.
"What you're witnessing in California is a full-blown assault on peace, on public order and national sovereignty," he told troops at Fort Bragg.
"This anarchy will not stand. We will not allow an American city to be invaded and conquered by a foreign enemy."
California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat who has clashed with the president before, said Trump's shock militarization of the city was the behavior of "a tyrant, not a president."
"Sending trained warfighters onto the streets is unprecedented and threatens the very core of our democracy," he said.
In a live-streamed address, Newsom called Trump a "president who wants to be bound by no law or constitution, perpetuating a unified assault on American tradition.
"California may be first, but it clearly will not end here."
In a filing to the US District Court in Northern California, Newsom asked for an injunction preventing the use of troops for policing.

Trump's use of the military is an "incredibly rare" move for a US president, Rachel VanLandingham, a professor at Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles and a former US Air Force lieutenant colonel, told AFP.

Trump "is trying to use emergency declarations to justify bringing in first the National Guard and then mobilizing Marines," said law professor Frank Bowman of the University of Missouri.

A senior administration official told AFP that "active-duty US Marines from Camp Pendleton will be deployed to Los Angeles to help protect federal agents and buildings."
The official first gave a figure of 500 Marines, but later updated the number to 700.
Deploying active duty military personnel like US Marines into a community of civilians within the United States is a highly unusual measure.
The US military separately confirmed the deployment of "approximately 700 Marines" from an infantry battalion following the unrest.
They would "seamlessly integrate" with National Guard forces that Trump deployed to Los Angeles on Saturday without the consent of California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom.
The deployment was meant to ensure there were "adequate numbers of forces," it added.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell then announced the mobilization of "an additional 2,000 California National Guard to be called into federal service to support ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) &amp; to enable federal law-enforcement officers to safely conduct their duties."
It was not immediately clear if the "additional" 2,000 guardsmen were on top of the 2,000 that had already been mobilized, or only the 300 that were already in the streets of Los Angeles.
Newsom wasted little time accusing the president of sowing "chaos" in Los Angeles.
"Trump is trying to provoke chaos by sending 4,000 soldiers onto American soil," the governor posted on X.
Earlier, he slammed the "deranged" decision by "dictatorial" Trump to send in Marines.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had first mentioned that the Marines could be deployed on Saturday.

The raids -- which began in broad daylight in a city with a large Latino population -- were always likely to spark reaction among the public in the liberal city.
But opponents say Trump, who has made clamping down on illegal migration a key plank of his second term, was deliberately stoking tensions with his deployment of California's National Guard, a stand-by military usually controlled by the state's governor, Gavin Newsom.
"We didn&rsquo;t have a problem until Trump got involved," Newsom wrote on X.
"This is a serious breach of state sovereignty &mdash; inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they&rsquo;re actually needed. Rescind the order. Return control to California," he added.
At least three self-driving Waymo cars were burning on Sunday afternoon, with two others vandalised as protestors roamed around a limited area in downtown Los Angeles.
Traffic was halted on a key freeway for over an hour while scores of people thronged the roadway. They were moved off by California Highway Patrol officers, who used flash-bangs and smoke grenades.
But after a limited early confrontation between federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security and a few dozen protestors at a detention center, the clashes all involved local law enforcement.
By early afternoon LAPD officers established containment lines some distance from federal buildings, preventing contact between angry demonstrators and the scores of armed National Guardsmen from the 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, who had gathered in helmets and camouflage gear.
- 'Troops everywhere' -
Trump, asked about the use of troops, was unrepentant, hinting instead at a more widespread deployment in other parts of the country.
"You have violent people, and we are not going to let them get away with it," he told reporters. "I think you're going to see some very strong law and order."
Responding to a question about invoking the Insurrection Act -- which would allow the military to be used as a domestic police force -- Trump said: "We're looking at troops everywhere. We're not going to let this happen to our country."
US Northern Command, part of the Department of Defense responsible for national defense, said "approximately 500 Marines...are in a prepared to deploy status should they be necessary to augment and support" the ongoing federal operations.
The National Guard is frequently used in natural disasters, and occasionally in instances of civil unrest, but almost always with the consent of local authorities.
Trump's deployment of the force -- the first over the head of a state governor since 1965 -- was criticised by Democrats, including former vice president Kamala Harris who called it "a dangerous escalation meant to provoke chaos."
 - 'Intimidation' -
But Republicans lined up behind Trump to dismiss the pushback.
"I have no concern about that at all," said &nbsp;House Speaker Mike Johnson, accusing Newsom of "an inability or unwillingness to do what is necessary".
Demonstrators told AFP the purpose of the troops did not appear to be to keep order.
"I think it's an intimidation tactic," Thomas Henning said.
"These protests have been peaceful. There's no one trying to do any sort of damage right now and yet you have the National Guard with loaded magazines and large guns standing around trying to intimidate Americans from exercising our first amendment rights."
Estrella Corral said demonstrators were angry that hard-working migrants who have done nothing wrong were being snatched by masked immigration agents.
"This is our community, and we want to feel safe," she told AFP.
"Trump deploying the National Guard is ridiculous. I think he's escalating, he's trying to make a show for his agenda."
Marshall Goldberg, 78, told AFP that deploying Guardsmen made him feel "so offended."
"We hate what they've done with the undocumented workers, but this is moving it to another level of taking away the right to protest and the right to just peaceably assemble," he said.
Raids by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency in other US cities have triggered small-scale protests in recent months, but the Los Angeles unrest is the biggest and most sustained against Trump's immigration policies so far.

Armed with a squeaky toy and accompanied by his other dog, Colvin approached the gate, where Oreo was found sitting atop the driveway&mdash;grimy but unharmed. The reunion was emotional as Colvin coaxed Oreo closer, embracing him with overwhelming joy.
&ldquo;Oh my God! You&rsquo;re alive! Oh, honey!&rdquo; Colvin exclaimed, pumping his fist in sheer relief and happiness.
The search for Oreo had captured widespread attention after Colvin's distress was featured in a story by NBC News correspondent Liz Kreutz. After several days of uncertainty, someone reported seeing Oreo amidst the rubble. This led Colvin to rush to the location, and on January 12, with the help of a professional dog trapper, he was finally reunited with his beloved pet.

&ldquo;I met Casey Colvin the very first day of the fire. He was in distress trying to get back to his home in the Palisades to get his two dogs, Oreo and Tika Tika Tika,&rdquo; said Kreutz.
Fortunately, a firefighter took heroic action and went to Colvin&rsquo;s home to save the dogs. However, he could only retrieve Tika Tika Tika because Oreo had already escaped. &ldquo;Had that firefighter not intervened, both dogs would have been trapped when the flames arrived,&rdquo; Kreutz added.
Afterward, a friend of Colvin spotted Oreo in the neighborhood, and with the help of an AirTag, they were able to track the dog's movements. Colvin was able to find Oreo hiding in a neighbor's home. When Oreo saw his owner, he immediately ran to him, completing the joyful reunion.
&ldquo;We rushed to his street where Oreo was hiding in his neighbor&rsquo;s home. The moment he saw Casey, he came running,&rdquo; Kreutz said.

The fires continued to rip through the United States' second-largest city for the sixth day, reducing whole communities to scorched rubble and leaving thousands without homes.
Massive firefighting efforts have staunched the spread of the Palisades Fire, which was looming toward upscale Brentwood and the densely populated San Fernando Valley.
But conditions are set to dramatically worsen, with "extreme fire behavior and life threatening conditions" over the coming days.
Winds up to 70 miles (110 kilometers) per hour mean a "particularly dangerous situation (PDS)" will be declared from early Tuesday, said National Weather Service meteorologist Rose Schoenfeld.
These gusts could fan flames and whip up embers from existing burn zones into new areas, firefighters warned.
Los Angeles County Fire Department chief Anthony Marrone said his department had received resources including dozens of new water trucks and firefighters from far afield and was primed to face the renewed threat.
Questioned whether hydrants could run dry again, as they did during the initial outbreak of fires last week, Mayor Karen Bass replied: "I believe the city is prepared."
There was frustration for evacuees who were told they would not be returning home until at least Thursday when winds subside.
Some have queued for hours in the hope of getting back to homes they fled to pick up medication or a change of clothes.

But Sheriff Robert Luna said escorts into these areas were being suspended Sunday because of the winds and dangerous conditions among the wreckage, as well as the need to retrieve victims' bodies.
Teams with cadaver dogs were carrying out grid searches with the grim expectation that the confirmed death toll would rise.
Several more arrests of looters were made, including one burglar who had dressed as a firefighter to steal from homes.
Nighttime curfews in evacuated zones have been extended, and additional National Guard resources have been requested.
Prevented from entering an evacuation zone, Altadena resident Bobby Salman, 42, said: "I have to be there to protect my family, my wife, my kids, my mom and I cannot even go and see them."

The Palisades Fire has now consumed 23,700 acres (9,500 hectares) and was just 11 percent contained.
Video footage showed "fire tornadoes" -- red-hot spirals that occur when a blaze is so intense it creates its own weather system.
The ferocious fire also left streaks of molten metal flowing from burnt-out cars.
But containment of the 14,000-acre Eaton Fire in Altadena had improved, figures showed, with 27 percent of its perimeter controlled.
The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner published a list of fatalities without giving details of any identities. Eight of the dead were found in the Palisades Fire zone, and 16 in the Eaton Fire zone, the document said.
The total number of residents under evacuation orders dropped to around 100,000, from a peak of almost 180,000.
The sudden rush of people needing somewhere to live has posed a growing problem for the city, with reports of illegal price gouging from opportunistic landlords.
"I'm back on the market with tens of thousands of people," said a man who gave his name as Brian, whose rent-controlled apartment had burned. "That doesn't bode well."
California Governor Gavin Newsom vowed the city would rebuild, saying there would be a "Marshall Plan" -- a reference to the US support that put Europe back on its feet after World War II.
"We already have a team looking at reimagining L.A. 2.0," he said.

President-elect Donald Trump has accused California officials of incompetence.
"This is one of the worst catastrophes in the history of our Country. They just can't put out the fires. What's wrong with them?" Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
A heroic firefighting operation that has operated 24/7 since the first flames erupted was bolstered Sunday with the arrival of crews from Mexico.
They join teams from all over California and across the western United States who have come to help out.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday even offered to send 150 personnel to California from his war-ravaged country.
"The situation there is extremely difficult, and Ukrainians can help Americans save lives," he wrote on social media.
A huge investigation by federal and local authorities was underway to determine what caused the blazes.
While the ignition of a wildfire can be deliberate, they are often natural, and a vital part of an environment's life cycle.

Massive wildfires that engulfed whole neighborhoods and displaced thousands in Los Angeles have killed at least 10 people, authorities said, as California's National Guard soldiers readied to hit the streets to help quell disorder.
News of the growing toll, announced late Thursday by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, came as swaths of the United States' second-largest city lay in ruins.
A vast firefighting operation continued into the night, bolstered by water-dropping helicopters thanks to a temporary lull in winds, even as new fires continued to spring up.
With reports of looting, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said a nighttime curfew was planned, and the state's National Guard was on hand to patrol affected areas.
Governor Gavin Newsom said the service members were part of a thousands-strong deployment of state personnel.
"We're throwing everything at our disposal -&ndash; including our National Guard service members &ndash;- to protect communities in the days to come," he said.
"And to those who would seek to take advantage of evacuated communities, let me be clear: looting will not be tolerated."
Luna said his officers were patrolling evacuation zones and would arrest anyone who was not supposed to be there.
But with such a huge area scorched by the fires, evacuees feared not enough was being done and some were taking matters into their own hands.
Nicholas Norman mounted an armed vigil at his home after seeing suspicious characters in the middle of the night.
"I did the classic American thing: I went and got my shotgun and I sat out there, and put a light on so they knew people were there," he told AFP.

- 'Death and destruction' -
The biggest of the multiple blazes has ripped through almost 20,000 acres (8,800 hectares) of the upscale Pacific Palisades neighborhood, while another fire around Altadena has torched 13,700 acres.
Firefighters said they were starting to get a handle on the Pacific Palisades blaze, with six percent of its perimeter contained -- meaning it can't spread any further in that direction.
But after a lull, winds were returning and new fires continued to erupt.
One flared near Calabasas and the wealthy Hidden Hills enclave, home to celebrities like Kim Kardashian, late Thursday.
The Kenneth Fire exploded to almost 1,000 acres within hours, forcing more people from their homes, with over 180,000 now displaced.
US President Joe Biden told a White House briefing he had pledged extra federal funds and resources to help the state cope with "the most... devastating fire in California's history."
Unlike Tuesday when the multi-pronged disaster roared to life and 100-mile (160-kilometer)-an-hour winds grounded all aircraft, firefighters were able to keep up a steady stream of sorties.
But one Super Scooper -- an amphibious aircraft that dumps hundreds of gallons of water at a time -- was grounded after colliding with a drone.
Although no one was hurt, the Federal Aviation Authority said it was probing the incident, and warned anyone flying drones in fire areas could be jailed for a year.
Some of those forced out of their homes began to return Thursday to find scenes of devastation.
Kalen Astoor, a 36-year-old paralegal, said her mother's home had been spared by the inferno's seemingly random and chaotic destruction. But many other homes had not.
"The view now is of death and destruction," she told AFP. "I don't know if anyone can come back for a while."

Meanwhile an AFP overflight of the Pacific Palisades and Malibu -- some of the most expensive real estate in the world and home to celebrities like Paris Hilton, Anthony Hopkins and Billy Crystal -- revealed desolation.
On highly coveted Malibu oceanfront plots skeletal frames of buildings indicated the lavish scale of what has been destroyed.
Multi-million dollar mansions have vanished entirely, seemingly swept into the Pacific Ocean by the force of the fire.
In the Palisades, grids of roads that were until Tuesday lined with stunning homes now resemble makeshift cemeteries.
For millions of others in the area, life was disrupted: schools were closed, hundreds of thousands were without power and major events were cancelled or, in the case of an NFL playoff game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Minnesota Vikings, moved somewhere else.
Meteorologists warn that "critical" windy and dry conditions, though abated, are not over.
A National Weather Service bulletin said "significant fire growth" remained likely "with ongoing or new fires" into Friday.
Wildfires occur naturally, but scientists say human-caused climate change is altering weather and changing the dynamics of the blazes.

At least five people have been killed in wildfires rampaging around Los Angeles, officials said Wednesday, with firefighters overwhelmed by the speed and ferocity of multiple blazes -- including in Hollywood.
Up to 1,500 buildings have burned in fires wreaking havoc around America's second biggest city, forcing over 100,000 people from their homes.
Hurricane-force winds whipped up fireballs that leapt from house to house, incinerating swathes of California's most desirable real estate.
Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said his crews were struggling with the scale and speed of the unfolding disasters.
"We're doing the very best we can. But no, we don't have enough fire personnel in LA County between all the departments to handle this," he said.
On Wednesday evening, a new fire erupted in the Hollywood Hills, just a few hundred meters (yards) from the storied Hollywood Boulevard -- home to sights such as the Grauman's Chinese Theatre, the Walk of Fame and the El Capitan Theatre.
An evacuation order was put in place for a number of streets in the historic district, as firefighters took to the skies to dump water on the blaze.
"There is no time to delay," Margaret Stewart of LAFD said.
"We do not want people stuck. We want everyone safely exiting, get in your vehicles, grab your friend who doesn't have a car, and head south."
The sudden eruption created gridlock on Hollywood's streets, hampering efforts by people who live in the area -- a mixture of ritzy homes and rent-controlled apartments -- to leave.
Sharon Ibarra, 29, told AFP she had rushed into Hollywood when she heard of the blaze to see if she could help her boss with her two babies.
"I am super nervous, scared because of everything that has happened in the other places," she said.
"Thank God there is not much wind like yesterday."
That wind -- with gusts up to 100 miles (160 kilometers) an hour -- spread the fire around the ritzy Pacific Palisades neighborhood with lightning speed.
At least 16,000 acres (6,500 hectares) had burned there, with 1,000 homes and businesses razed.
A separate 10,600-acre (4,300-hectare) fire was burning around Altadena, north of the city, where flames tore through suburban streets.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said five people were known to have perished, with more deaths feared.
William Gonzales got out alive, but his Altadena home was gone.
"We have lost practically everything; the flames have consumed all our dreams," he told AFP. 
- Hydrants run dry -
Pasadena fire chief Chad Augustin said up to 500 buildings had been lost to the flames there.
He hailed the bravery of first responders. "Our death count today would be significantly higher without their heroic actions," Augustin told reporters.
Los Angeles Department of Water and Power chief executive Janisse Quinones pleaded with people to save water after hydrants in Pacific Palisades ran dry.
President-elect Donald Trump took to his social media platform on Wednesday to claim -- wrongly -- that the lack of water was the result of the state's environmental policies.
In fact, much of Los Angeles' water comes from the Colorado River, and farming -- rather than residential use or firefighting -- takes the lion's share of all water that flows into Southern California.
US President Joe Biden cancelled a trip to Italy this week to focus on the federal response to the fires.
"We're doing anything and everything, and as long as it takes to contain these fires," Biden earlier told reporters. 
- Dryness -
Having razed perhaps hundreds of multimillion-dollar homes, the Pacific Palisades fire looked set to be one of the costliest blazes on record.
AccuWeather said it estimated up to $57 billion of losses.
More than 300,000 households were without electricity in the region, according to Poweroutage.us. Utilities in California frequently de-energize lines during high winds to minimize the risk of new fires.
Wildfires are part of life in the US West and play a vital role in nature.
But scientists say human-caused climate change is altering weather patterns.
Southern California had two decades of drought that were followed by two exceptionally wet years, which sparked furious vegetative growth -- leaving the region packed with fuel and primed to burn -- and then has had no significant rain for eight months.
Meteorologist Daniel Swain said the fierce winds are stronger than the usual seasonal Santa Ana winds, but are not unexpected.
"The winds are the driver, but the real catalyst... is this incredible antecedent dryness," he said.
"That's something that we haven't seen in records going back to the 1800s."

A ferocious wildfire in a Los Angeles suburb, home to many Hollywood celebrities, devoured buildings and sparked panicked evacuations Tuesday, as hurricane-force winds tore through the region.
Frightened residents abandoned their cars on one of the only roads in and out of the upscale Pacific Palisades area, fleeing on foot from the almost 3,000-acre (1,200-hectare) blaze engulfing an area packed with multimillion-dollar homes in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Firefighters used bulldozers to push dozens of vehicles -- including expensive models such as BMWs, Teslas and Mercedes -- to one side, leaving many crumpled and with their alarms blaring. Some celebrities posted comments and pictures on social media platforms.
Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley said despite the chaotic evacuation, there were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.
Hundreds of firefighters swarmed the area, attacking the blaze from the ground and the air, while crews worked through steep terrain to cut back vegetation and create firebreaks.
Around 30,000 people were ordered to evacuate the fast-spreading flames, which leveled multiple homes as powerful winds spread embers far and wide.
Velma Wright, 102, was evacuated from a care facility as embers and flames approached in Pasadena, an AFP photographer saw.
Trees and vegetation around the prestigious Getty Villa Museum were burned, but the structure and collections were spared, the museum said in a post on X.
The Getty, set up by US oil billionaire and collector J. Paul Getty and one of the world's richest art museums, houses Greek and Roman antiquities in a re-created Roman country home.
Actor James Woods posted a video on X showing flames engulfing trees and bushes near his home as he got ready to evacuate and shortly afterward said all the fire alarms were going off.
"I couldn't believe our lovely little home in the hills held on this long. It feels like losing a loved one," Woods said.
Across town, on the northern edge of Los Angeles, another fire broke out in Eaton Canyon, near Pasadena, quickly consuming 200 acres (81 hectares) Tuesday night, according to Angeles National Forest officials.
US President Joe Biden -- who was in Los Angeles for a planned announcement on new national monuments -- said he was "being frequently briefed on the wildfires" and has offered "any federal assistance that is needed."

One man, who gave his name as Gary, told broadcaster KTLA that hot ashes were raining down on his community of Sea Ridge.
"There was smoke in the distance, and I was assured that it would not come over the hill... Five minutes later, it's coming down the hill," he said.
"Everyone panicked, that's when everybody made a run and went to go and pack their houses up."
Evacuee Kelsey Trainor said she saw the fire explode in size as she was fleeing.
"By the time we got to the bottom of the hill, which is about two or three miles, there were flames on both sides of the road, and it became gridlocked," she said.
"No one knew what to do. Everyone was honking their horns. There's flames all around you.
"I could see people walking with suitcases, with their dogs, children. An elderly woman was really visibly upset and in tears."
Pacific Palisades resident Andrew Hires told AFP he got a text alerting him to the fire as his child was at the dentist about to have a tooth extracted.
"We pulled off the mask and ran to the car," he said.

The fire came as the area was being hit by seasonal Santa Ana winds that forecasters said could develop into the worst windstorm in a decade, with gusts of up to 100 miles (160 kilometers) an hour expected.
"This looks pretty, pretty concerning," said meteorologist Daniel Swain.
"It's going to be, I think, a rough night. And what's going on now is only just the beginning, because weather conditions are going to get a lot worse."

The building includes OB-GYN and neonatal intensive care, Crowley said.

The hospital originally lost power at 3 a.m. Monday after Tropical Storm Hilary dumped record rainfall on the city, and backup generators that were supposed to last three days kicked in, Raffoul said.

The firefighter reached the man and hooked him to a device before the two were lifted together to the helicopter.
A statement from the LAFD says the man was taken to a hospital after suffering the effects of hypothermia. No other injuries were immediately found.
The statement said it was not immediately known how the man wound up in the river.
