As per the Hindu calendar, the Sawan month occurs immediately after the Ashadha month. This year the month began on 25th July and will go on till 22nd August. Several other festivals like Teej, Raksha Bandhan and Krishna Janmashtami are also celebrated in the holy month of Sawan.
During the Sawan month devotees visit temples, offer prayers and observe a fast every Monday. Over lakhs of worshippers also carry out a Kanwar Yatra to Hindu pilgrimage places in&nbsp;Haridwar&nbsp;and Gangotri in Uttarakhand. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown, the yatra has been canceled for this year.
Even visiting your local temples may not be possible. But what you can do instead is pray at home, recite the &ldquo;vrat katha&rdquo; and offer "Panchamrut", a mix of milk, ghee, gangajal, yogurt and honey along with bel leaves, to lord Shiva. During this month people avoid the consumption of alcohol and non-vegetarian food.
It is believed that those who worship sincerely and wholeheartedly&nbsp;in this month, are blessed with happiness, peace and prosperity.

Despite anxiety mounting about a potential third wave of Covid-19 infections, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath&nbsp;has decided to allow the Kanwar Yatra this year from July 25.&nbsp;
&lsquo;Kanwariyas&rsquo; who are devotees of Lord Shiva collect water from River Ganga at Haridwar to offer at Shiva temples in their areas as part of the yatra.
According to reports, CM&nbsp;Adityanath has directed officials to prepare guidelines for conducting the yatra while ensuring full compliance to Covid-19 protocols.&nbsp;
CM has also said UP officials should should speak to their counterparts in Bihar, as there is significant movement of devotees between two states, and ensure that there are no violations of Covid protocols.
The home department has been asked to formulate a detailed guideline for regulating the yatra this year.&nbsp;
Last year, the Uttar Pradesh government had suspended the Kanwar yatra in view of the pandemic.
The Uttarakhand government has already cancelled the Kanwar yatra and imposed Section 144 on the borders of Haridwar.
