A latest study has shed light on the impact of loneliness on men's mental as well as bone health.

A study at the Maine Health Institute for Research in Scarborough has shed light on how loneliness affects men's health. As per the study, social isolation not only impacts men's mental health but may also be bad for their bones.&nbsp;
The lead researcher of the study, Dr. Rebecca Mountain said that women might not suffer from the same physical fallout of loneliness.
The study used mice and found that loneliness caused reduction in bone quality and also reduced mineral density in the bones of male mice.&nbsp;
Dr Mountain also said that loneliness is associated with several health conditions including mental illnesses.&nbsp;
However, further research on this topic is required, she added. She concluded by saying that their "work provides critical insight into the effects of isolation on bone and has key clinical implications as we grapple with the long-term health impacts of the rise in social isolation related to the Covid-19 pandemic."
It is worth taking note that earlier clinical research has found that mental health disorders are major risk factors for fractures which disproportionally affect older adults.

In the report, he mentioned that the loneliness epidemic is hitting young people aged between 15 to 24.

US surgeon general Dr Vivek Murthy recently said that widespread loneliness in the US poses health risks as deadly as smoking a dozen cigarettes daily. He further declared that it is the latest epidemic.&nbsp;
In the report, he mentioned that the loneliness epidemic is hitting young people aged between 15 to 24. This age group reported a 70 per cent drop in time spent with friends.
Murthy also highlighted that social media is driving the increase in loneliness in particular and health systems should train doctors to recognise health risks caused by it.

As per researchers, people between the ages of 16-24, are more prone to loneliness, isolation and depression due to career choices, change in city or lifestyle.&nbsp;
For the study, the team interviewed participants from different age groups who had friends from other age groups, and found out that friendship between older and younger people promote involvement and belongingness in society, while also sharing different life experiences with each other.&nbsp;
Younger participants told how their older friends provided great advice and support about life, career and dating that their friends of similar ages couldn't.&nbsp;
The participants said different viewpoints, opinions, and interests made them learn every day. On a lighter note, with evolving new terms on social media and in pop culture society, it is always safe to have a Gen Z by your side. Wink! &nbsp;
So, &lsquo;age is just a number&rsquo;, is making much more sense now. Ain&rsquo;t it?

Apart from the mental health impact of Covid-19 itself, many reports have spoken of the adverse effects of restrictions on social life amid the pandemic.&nbsp;But new research from the UK claims that it may not be all bad news.

In fact,&nbsp;the time spent alone during the pandemic months has been linked to positive effects on&nbsp;well-being across all age groups in a new study.&nbsp;Published in Frontiers in Psychology, the research&nbsp;has been based on interviews of over 2,000 teens and adults conducted around the end of UK&rsquo;s first national lockdown in summer 2020.
The study says that most participants described their pandemic solitude period with feelings of competence and autonomy. The feelings of competence were based on&nbsp;time spent on skill-building and new activities while the autonomous feeling was attributed to&nbsp;self-connection and reliance on self.
The most negative experiences from solitude were reported by working-age adults with 35.6 per cent mentioning disrupted well-being.&nbsp;The team explained that this may be because this age group lost the most in terms of pockets of personal time such as&nbsp;their commute or a work break.
All in all, the study remarked on the importance of 'peaceful moments' for overall well-being.
