The India VIX or volatility index is seeing massive spikes ahead of the Lok Sabha election results. The VIX hit a 52-week high, hitting the 17.56 mark on Tuesday. That's up about 70% from a low of 10, which it touched in April.
<h3>Volatility Index</h3>
The VIX is the index that gauges the extent of anticipated volatility in the market which also indicates investor sentiment. A higher VIX indicates increasing volatility due to uncertainty and investor fear while a lower VIX indicates a stable period and positive investor sentiment.
Analysts cited by Business Standard say that this volatility is attributed to nervousness ahead of the outcome of Lok Sabha elections and expect the VIX to continue its upward movement in the run up to June 4th, when the results will be declared.
&ldquo;The rise aligns with historical trends, as the VIX typically climbs before major events like general elections,&rdquo; Santosh Meena, Head of Research at Swastika Investmart, told Financial express. The historical data shows that the index has seen a jump of 150% during 2019 and over 200% in 2014, which means there is a likelihood of a further rise in the VIX.
Attributing experts, a Moneycontrol reports says there is no need for panic but they recommend reducing highly leveraged positions and utilising hedges to manage volatility effectively. The Moneycontrol report also quotes Avdhut Bagkar, Derivatives and Technical Analyst at StoxBox who says that a further rise in the VIX index may trigger short-term bearishness.

Restaurants and hospitals here are offering discounts on their services to citizens who go out to vote in the Lok Sabha elections on April 26.
The initiative called &ldquo;Democracy Discount&rdquo; allows the citizens to avail 20 per cent discount in restaurants in Noida and Greater Noida by showing their finger with voter ink on April 26 and April 27.
National Restaurants Association of India (NRAI) has exhorted member companies for the initiative, which has seen about two dozen restaurants in the constituency coming on board till Wednesday.
Among restaurants offering the discount are Desi Vibes, Kaffiiaa, I Sacked Newton, De Valentino Caf&Atilde;&copy;, Noida Social, Getafix, Osteria, Chica Loca, F Bar Noida, Xero Courtyard Gardens Galleria, Dirty Rabbit, Baby Dragon, Trippy Tequila, Cafe Delhi heights, Ching Singh, Paso Noida, Moire Cafe &amp; Lounge, The Beer Caf&Atilde;&copy;, Sky by Swagath, 'Imperfecto and The Patiala Kkitchen, according to NRAI.

Naresh Madan, owner of Imperfecto, said it's a "win-win situation" for citizens, they can participate in the election voting and also have meals at discounts at their three restaurants in the constituency.

The International Monetary Fund has applauded India for maintaining fiscal discipline in an election year, saying that the Indian economy is doing well and continues to be the world's bright spot.
"At this point in time, India's economy is doing well. Growth at 6.8% is very good. Inflation's coming down. We have to make sure that inflation comes down to target and it is there on a durable basis. Macro fundamentals look pretty good," Krishna Srinivasan, Director, Asia and Pacific Department, at the IMF told PTI in an interview.
"One thing I would say is that maintaining fiscal discipline, especially in the election year, for me, has been quite a highlight because countries do embark on fiscal adventures in the election year.
"This government has maintained a discipline, I think, is very important because at the end of the day, sound macro fundamentals are the basis on which countries prosper and have durable growth. So that's very important to maintain that," Srinivasan said.
<h3>Fiscal discipline during election year</h3>
India, he said, has successfully navigated multiple shocks over the last several years. It's emerging to be one of the fastest major economies in the world. "In fact, for this year, for 2024-25, we project growth at 6.8% led by private consumption and public investment. Inflation is coming down gradually. It's now below 5%," he said.
"If you look at the macro fundamentals, they're pretty solid, despite this being an election year, the government has adhered to fiscal discipline. You look at the reserve position, it's strong. If you look at overall macro fundamentals, it's pretty good," he said, adding that risks to the economy are broadly balanced.
According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India's forex reserves jumped by USD 2.98 billion to a fresh peak of USD 648.562 billion for the week ended April 5. In the previous reporting week, the forex kitty had increased by USD 2.951 billion to USD 645.583 billion, which was an all-time high.
"In the short-term, an important risk is volatile commodity prices with various tensions... But going beyond the short-term, you could think in terms of weather-related shocks, fragmentation, all these are things to worry about in terms of risks to the outlook.
"Of course, there are also risks to the upside when I say private consumption could be stronger. The impact from CapEx spending in India could be stronger with more crowding in the private investment. So those are upside risks. In a nutshell, India has a sweet spot at this point in time," the IMF official said.
Srinivasan said India is among the main drivers of global growth. "This year we expect economic growth at 6.8%. That is led by private consumption and a lot of public investment... India will contribute almost 17% of global growth. So that's one reason why we think it's a bright spot," he said.
"The second driver is Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). I think this is an important moment, almost like a watershed moment. It's very fundamental because what the DPI does is it enhances productivity by fostering competition and innovation. It also furthers financial inclusion and makes the public sector that much more efficient. So this is a big thing," he said.
That's another reason why the IMF thinks India a bright spot.
"The third reason, is that India has a young and growing population. India is likely to add 15 million people to the labor force every year. There could be other factors which lead us to believe it's a bright spot. But again, when I talk about the young population and to benefit from the demographic dividend, I think a lot of reforms will be needed, which going forward over the medium-term will require a lot of reforms," he said.
For the demographic dividend to be reaped, India has to invest a lot in education and health. "I cannot emphasize this more because it's not just about the population and how to employ them proactively. You're going to have transformations like AI coming into play.
"In India's labor force, the young have to be well skilled, well equipped to deal with these transformation changes to contribute effectively to the economy. In that sense, yes, investment in education, health is very important. That's one thing in terms of reforms,&rdquo; he said.
"I would also say that making the labor market smoother, functioning well by implementing these labor reforms which have been passed recently is very important. Reducing the number of trade restrictions is important because this is, you give opportunities for people to expand the horizon beyond the domestic economy. Making the country more attractive to business investment is very important.
"Even now when you talk to investors, they talk about the red tape, the bureaucracy, how long it takes to get things done in India. I think those are things which need to be addressed effectively for India to gain from this young population and have long-term growth,&rdquo; Srinivasan said.
"For the medium-term, we have a growth rate of 6.5%, which is good. But you need more than that. And the last thing I would say is for investors to make well-informed decisions about the economy, about various issues, it'll be important to also at a fundamental level think in terms of our macroeconomic statistics, which can help people make well-informed decisions about investment, which is more durable,&rdquo; said the IMF official.&nbsp;
The Lok Sabha elections in India are conducted in 7 phases starting April 19. The last phase of voting is on June 1 and the results will be announced on June 4

The BJP has releaseed the 3rd list of its candidates for Lok Sabha polls 2024

The BJP on Thursday named its candidates for nine Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu, fielding former Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan from Chennai South and party state unit chief K Annamalai from Coimbatore.
The party fielded former DMK leader and sitting MP T R Paarivendhar and Union Minister L Murugan from Perambalur and Nilgiris respectively.
Former Union minister Pon Radhakrishnan will contest from Kanniyakumari.
Vinoj P Selvam will contest from Chennai Central, A C Shanmugam from Vellore, C Narasimhan from Krishnagiri, and Nainar Nagendran from Thoothukkudi, the party said.
Polling in the state's 39 Lok Sabha seats will be held in the first phase on April 19.
The BJP did not win a single seat from Tamil Nadu in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.&nbsp;

Citing sources, PTI said that Paswan's party may get five to six Lok Sabha seats, including Hajipur which is represented by his uncle Pashupati Paras.

LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan on Wednesday said his party has finalised a seat-sharing formula with the BJP for the Lok Sabha polls and that all his "concerns" were addressed.
Paswan, who met BJP chief J P Nadda here, also told reporters after the meeting that the seats will be formally announced soon.
Meanwhile, sources said Hajipur, the seat represented by his uncle Pashupati Paras, who is heading another faction of Lok Janshakti Party, might be given to Paswan, who has been staking a claim to this Lok Sabha seat that was once the bastion of LJP founder and his father Ram Vilas Paswan.
"Division of Lok Sabha seats in Bihar among all NDA parties decided. It will soon be formally announced. All my concerns have been addressed by the BJP. I am satisfied," Paswan said.
Asked about the fate of the faction headed by his estranged uncle and Union minister Paras, Paswan said it was not his concern.
"The seats my party has are mine," he said, in an indication that the claims of the Paras-headed National Lok Janshakti Party might have been ignored by the BJP.
According to sources, Paswan's party may get five to six Lok Sabha seats to contest.
Paswan also exuded confidence that the NDA will be able to win all 40 Lok Sabha seats from Bihar.
Asked about his differences with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, he said all the NDA constituents are working to achieve the vision of crossing 400 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Congress party on Friday released its first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Rahul Gandhi, former Chhatisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel and Shashi Tharoor are among the 39 candidates named on the list.
While Rahul will be contesting from Kerala&rsquo;s Wayanad again, Baghel has been fielded from Rajnandgaon seat and Tharoor from Thiruvananthapuram.
Of the 39 candidates, 24 are from the SC and ST community, and 15 are from the general category.
Notably, Priyanka Gandhi's name is missing from the first list.
Meanwhile, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal will contest from Alappuzha (Kerala), Jyotsna Mahant from Korba, and Tamradhwaj Sahu from Mahasamund.
Venugopal said the list has 15 general category candidates while 24 are from the SC, ST, OBC and minority communities.
Congress treasurer Ajay Maken said the list has a good mix of youth and experience.
The announcement came a day after the Congress' Central Election Committee (CEC) finalised the names for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections after having a discussion on over 60 Lok Sabha seats from 11 states and union territories.
The CEC meeting which was chaired by party president Mallikarjun Kharge.
Discussions were held on Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Sikkim, Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya and Lakshwadeep.
"We are in election mode and on an aggressive path of campaigning with Rahul Gandhi undertaking the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra which is in Gujarat," Venugopal said.
The Nyay Yatra will end on March 17 in Mumbai with a mammoth rally planned and Congress president Kharge is writing to all INDIA bloc partners to attend that rally, he said.
Kharge, former party chief Sonia Gandhi and Venugopal, as well as other senior leaders who are part of the CEC were present at the meeting.
There is speculation that Rahul Gandhi may also contest from Amethi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from Rae Bareli, a seat which was previously held by Sonia Gandhi. Both the seats are considered bastions of the Gandhi family and the local units of the Congress have demanded that the two scions of the Congress first family should contest from there.
