The central government, state governments and ministers are subject to certain special set of guidelines under the Model Code of Conduct apart from the rules that are applicable to all parties and candidates.&nbsp;

The Model Code of Conduct is now in place in India after the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections by the Election Commission.&nbsp;
The Model Code is a set of guidelines given by the poll panel to central govt, state govts and political parties on how to conduct themselves and their election campaign. It comes into force immediately after an election is announced and is in force till the results are announced.&nbsp;
The central government, state governments and ministers are subject to certain special set of guidelines under the Model Code of Conduct apart from the rules that are applicable to all parties and candidates.&nbsp;
They are prohibited from announcing any financial grants or welfare schemes once the elections are announced.&nbsp;
Ministers cannot inaugurate or lay founding stones for any project. They also cannot make promises of building roads or any other infrastructure.&nbsp;
They are barred from using any official or govt machinery for election campaigning. Govt transport cannot be used for campaigning visits.&nbsp;
Central government and state governments can&rsquo;t use public money to advertise for their party.&nbsp;
Under the general guidelines, political parties and candidates cannot indulge in any activity which may aggravate existing differences or create mutual hatred or cause tension between different castes and communities, religious or linguistic.
Criticism of other parties or candidates should be based on work and not personal life.&nbsp;
Candidates or parties cannot appeal to caste or communal feelings for securing votes. Places of worship should not be used as forum for election propaganda.
Parties are barred from bribing voters through money or material. Intimidating voters or impersonating them is prohibited.&nbsp;
Campaigning ends 48 hours before the close of voting for a constituency.&nbsp;

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who was part of the selection panel, announced the names of the two new election commissioners on Thursday.&nbsp;
Chowdhury said that Gyanesh Kumar from Kerala and Sukhbir Sandhu from Punjab have been chosen as the new election comissioners ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.&nbsp;
The Congress leader, who was part of the committee along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, objected to the selection process.
'Earlier, they had given me 212 names, but 10 minutes before the appointment they again gave me just six names. I am not saying that it's arbitrary but the procedure that is being followed has some lacunae,' he said.&nbsp;

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is set to fight BJP's Rajeev Chandrasekhar for the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat in the upcoming elections.
Speaking to News 18, Tharoor predicted that the BJP would not have any success in the southern states, including Kerala.
Tharoor said that he has a good track record of service to constituents and has taken major development initiatives to cater to the voters.
Without naming anyone, the Congress MP said he won't base his stand on fake contenders and that there have been contenders each time.&nbsp;
"I am not anxious about any major BJP resurgence in either Kerala or Tamil Nadu. They have had some success in the recent past in Telangana and Karnataka but I am sure they will have less success this time. There is not such as anti-incumbency," Tharoor told News18.
Notably, the BJP did not win any of the 20 seats in Kerala in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

In the first meeting headed by ex-President Kovind, the panel invited views from political leaders and the Law Commission.&nbsp;

The Law Commission is working on a formula to synchronise all assembly polls by extending or reducing the tenure so that all state elections can be held along with the Lok Sabha polls 2029 onwards, sources said on Friday.
As the government has already set up a high-level panel to explore simultaneous polls for Lok Sabha, state assemblies and local bodies, the Law Commission may also be asked to include the third tier of elections along with its current mandate for national and state-level polls.
The sources also said the law panel is devising a mechanism to ensure a common electoral roll for Lok Sabha, assemblies and local bodies to reduce cost and use of manpower for undertaking an almost identical exercise which is carried out now by the Election Commission and various state election commissions.
The Law Commission's report on simultaneous polls is not ready as some issues are yet to be settled, the sources pointed out.
