The illicit liquor trade in Uttar Pradesh takes a bizarre turn as the liquor mafia employs hand pumps to elude authorities and boost sales

In a startling revelation, the battle against the illicit liquor trade in Uttar Pradesh has taken a bizarre turn, with the liquor mafia resorting to an ingenious method to evade law enforcement and bolster their sales during the election season. The unconventional conduit for their operations? Hand pumps.
In a small hamlet known as Basariya Dera, nestled within Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi district, police found a hand pump which was dispensing alcohol instead of water.&nbsp; A video of this discovery is doing rounds on the internet.&nbsp;
Over the past month, the Uttar Pradesh excise department has managed to seize a staggering 9,749 litres of illicit liquor. Police further said that they recovered around 80 litres of country-made alcohol, which were stored in the barrels, lying buried beneath the ground in Basariya Dera in Jhansi.&nbsp;

People in Karnataka will now have to shell out more to buy alcohol as the state government on Friday proposed to hike additional excise duty in the 2023-24 budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.&nbsp;
Siddaramaiah, who holds the Finance portfolio, proposed to increase the existing rates of the duty on Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) by 20 per cent on all 18 slabs.
He also proposed to increase the duty on beer from 175 per cent to 185 per cent.
"Even after the increase in excise rates, the price of liquor in our state would be lower when compared to the neighbouring states," the Chief Minister said in the budget speech.
With these hikes and effective enforcement and regulatory measures, the revenue collection target for the Excise Department for the year 2023-24 is fixed at Rs 36,000 crore, Siddaramaiah added.

“I am telling you that one crore people are drinking ( alcohol) in the state. All of you people vote for BJP, we will offer you cheap liquor at Rs 75. If the revenues are good we will even supply at just Rs 50, (not bad liquor), definitely a good one,” Veerraju said indirectly pointing to high prices of liquor in the state.
The BJP leader was trying to capitalise on the high liquor prices in the state due to state taxes. The government, however, says that the high prices are in line with its policy of reducing liquor consumption among the poor.
Referring to some of the Jagan Mohan Reddy government's Direct Benefit Transfer schemes, the BJP leader said on an average a person consumes liquor for about Rs 12,000 per month and Jagan Reddy is collecting all that amount and giving it back in the name of a scheme.

BJP MP Parvesh Verma on Monday brandished a pack of liquor in the Lok Sabha while accusing the AAP government of promoting alcohol in the national capital.
The BJP MP alleged that the Delhi government was busy drafting the new excise policy when the people of the city were desperately looking for oxygen during the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic.
Waving a pack of liquor, Verma claimed that according to the AAP government's new excise policy, the age limit for drinking alcohol has been reduced, wine shops can be stay open till 3 am and women will be given a discount for drinking between 12 am to 3 am in 'pink bars'.
Verma further said that rather than fulfilling the promise of giving fresh and clean water in the national capital, the AAP government is providing liquor to the people.

New 850 swanky liquor outlets are opening in Delhi from Wednesday. These new private liquor shops will have walk-ins and some may also offer tasting facilities to enhance customer experience.
The Delhi government has bid&nbsp;goodbye to the retail liquor business as Tuesday marked the last business day for nearly 600 government-run liquor shops across Delhi.
As per the new excise policy, the liquor business will now be handled completely by private players.
Around 250-300 shops will be able to function on the first day. These new liquor vends will remain open from 10 am to 10 pm.
The Excise Department, which is in the process of fixing the maximum retail price (MRP) of brands to be registered in Delhi, said the wholesale price of all types of liquor are likely to increase by 8-9 per cent.
It aims at revolutionising the consumer experience by replacing the existing liquor vends in the nooks and corners of the city with posh and stylish liquor stores spread over at least 500 square feet area with a walk-in facility.
