The mortality rate of lions has gone down substantially compared to the last two years, the state forest minister was quoted as saying.

One hundred lions died in Gujarat last year, state forest minister Murubhai Bera told the assembly on March 6.
Out of the 100, 89 died due to natural reasons while 11 died due to unnatural reasons.
Among the dead, 20 were male lions, 21 females while 58 were cubs.
These deaths account for nearly 15% of the lion population of the total 674 remaining as per the census in 2020.&nbsp;

Two lionesses at the park gave birth to the seven cubs, four of which are white cubs, and three are brown.
Since its opening in June 2017, Mostaland park recorded several successful births of lion cubs of the African species - 15 lion cubs including six white ones.
The park is home to 21 African lions and cubs, two Liger big cats, five Royal Bengal tigers, seven polar wolves and six other African golden wolves, in addition to 140 other animals from around 40 species.

A chilling video of a lioness approaching two people on a scooter on a mud road in a Gujarat village has been doing the rounds on Twitter. In the video, shared by a forest officer, the lioness can be seen walking towards the travellers and switching from one side of the road to other.
The video has been captured by the pillion rider, who is heard panicking and chanting the name of some guru. The big cat comes closer to them, crosses the mud road and jumps to the adjacent field.Socail media users praised the two persons for not panicking in the situation. While some wondered why the duo were not attacked, a person commented that the big cat in the clip is an Asiatic lioness, a species that is known for co-existing abilities with human beings.

So are big cats particularly vulnerable? What have studies found?
Several studies have found that the most vulnerable species to coronavirus infection, next to humans, are ferrets, followed by cats and civets.
Why?
The defining feature of a coronavirus is the spike protein on its surface. The spike protein initiates infection by binding with a host protein, called ACE2 receptor.
Different species have different levels of ACE2; this plays a key role in determining how much a species is susceptible to coronavirus infection.
In various studies, domestic cats and their big cousins have been found or estimated to express ACE2 more significantly than many other species.
Another critical factor is that there are similarities in the ACE2 of cats and humans.
According to a PNAS study, at very high risk are primates such as chimpanzee rhesus macaque. At high risk are species such as blue-eyed black lemur. Cats were found to have medium risk, while dogs had a low risk.
What about your pet cat?
Thus far, pet cats have not been a known source of human infection. There have been only the occasional cases of cats becoming ill from their owners, and they have only been mildly ill.
In a 2020 study in Wuhan, almost 15% of cats had antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 virus, suggesting they either were infected by people or other cats.
So, It would be prudent to keep some distance from your pet if you are ill with Covid, so as not to accidentally infect them.

In perhaps the first such reported incident, eight Asiatic lions in the zoo here have tested positive for&nbsp;COVID-19&nbsp;after their saliva samples were thoroughly examined by CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad, Rakesh Mishra, advisor of the premier research institute said on Tuesday.
&ldquo;The saliva samples of the Asiatic lions were thoroughly tested and they turned out to be positive. As they were living closely it must have been spread among them,&rdquo; Mishra told PTI.
&ldquo;Now we are developing a method to test the samples of their feces. This method would be useful in future as every time it is not possible to collect saliva samples from wild animals,&rdquo; he added.
He further said the virus which is present in the lions at the Nehru Zoological Park here is not any new variant.
&ldquo;They have mild symptoms and they are eating well and they are fine,&rdquo; he said.
Replying to a query, he said there is every possibility of animals contracting the virus as they are also mammals like human beings.
Mishra further said these animals must have got infected through zoo-keeping staff.
A senior official of the zoo said they keep sending the samples of the animals to CCMB from time to time for analysis.
As the lions started showing symptoms such as fever, the zoo officials collected the samples and sent them to CCMB.

Bihar: Grand Alliance announces seat-sharing formula

PTI,&nbsp;Patna:&nbsp;A multi-party Grand Alliance took shape here ahead of the Bihar assembly polls on Saturday, notwithstanding a minor fissure, with Rashtriya Janata Dals Tejashwi Yadav being backed unanimously as the face of the coalition and the party ending up with a lions share of the seats.
Announcing the seat-sharing formula in presence of leaders of Congress, CPI(ML), CPI and CPI(M), Yadav said his party will accommodate old alliance partner Vikashheel Insaan Party (VIP) and JMM its ally in adjoining Jharkhand from its quota of 144 seats in the 243-strong assembly.
Among other allies, Congress has been given 70 seats, nearly twice as many as it had contested in the 2015 assembly polls in alliance with the RJD and Chief Minister Nitish Kumars JD(U).
The Congress will also be fielding its candidate in Valmiki Nagar Lok Sabha seat where by-poll will be held on November 07.
Among the Left parties, the CPI(ML) has been given 19 seats, followed by CPI (six) and CPI(M).
Yadav vowed to dislodge the government headed by Nitish Kumar, whom Congress leader Avinash Pandey in his address accused of "apharan" (hijacking) of the mandate in the previous elections.
The JD(U) chief had fought 2015 elections opposing the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi but ended up re- aligning with the saffron party, Pandey said.
The disjointed formation, however, continued to be in disarray as VIP president Mukesh Sahni a Bollywood set designer-turned-politician announced soon after the press conference that he was quitting the grand alliance since he did not get "a respectable offer".&nbsp;
