Amid a bird flu scare in Uttar Pradesh, 'Pataudi', an adult Asiatic lion from the Gorakhpur zoo, died during treatment at the Kanpur zoo on Thursday, officials said.
The lion born at the Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden in Gujarat's Junagadh had been ailing for the past few weeks. Medical reports revealed severe infections in his liver and pancreas, the officials said.
As his condition deteriorated, Pataudi was shifted to the Kanpur zoo for advanced care under expert veterinary supervision, where he died on Thursday, Gorakhpur zoo director Vikas Yadav said.
Following the recent death of a tigress named 'Shakti' at the Gorakhpur zoo and confirmation of H5 avian influenza virus by the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, on Wednesday, 13 samples from the Gorakhpur zoo were sent to the NIHSAD for testing.
"The virus is highly contagious and can spread from birds to other animals and even humans. Preventive measures are critical," Yadav said.
The zoo staff have been instructed to strictly adhere to all the safety guidelines as part of the ongoing containment efforts, the official said.
Pataudi was transferred to the Etawah Lion Safari from Junagadh on September 26, 2019, and later brought to the Gorakhpur Zoo in February 2021 along with lioness Maryam.
When he was shifted to Gorakhpur, officials said he was around eight years old.

Asiatic lions currently inhabit approximately 30,000 square kilometers across 53 talukas in nine districts of Gujarat. The state government has implemented several conservation initiatives to protect these majestic creatures and other wildlife species.&nbsp;
As part of a national effort, a National Referral Center for Wildlife is being set up on over 20.24 hectares of land in New Pipalya, Junagadh district. Additionally, a high-tech wildlife monitoring center and a state-of-the-art hospital have been established in Sasan to strengthen conservation efforts.

In 2024, 237 new beat guards (162 men and 75 women) were recruited in Gir to patrol protected areas and ensure the safety of lion habitats. Gujarat's conservation efforts for Asiatic lions have been significantly shaped by the initiatives of Narendra Modi during his tenure as the state's Chief Minister.&nbsp;
In 2007, he personally visited the Gir forest to assess ground realities and spearheaded transformative projects for the holistic development of the region, lion conservation, and biodiversity preservation.
The concept of Bruhad Gir, introduced by Modi, expanded conservation beyond the Gir National Park to cover a vast 30,000 sq. km area from Barda to Botad, where Asiatic lions are found. This initiative not only ensured the protection of wildlife but also focused on the welfare and progress of local communities.
World Wildlife Day, observed annually on March 3, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 to raise awareness about the world's wild fauna and flora.
On this occasion, PM Modi reaffirmed India&rsquo;s commitment to wildlife conservation, stating, "Every species plays a vital role&mdash;let's safeguard their future for generations to come!"

The Bengal Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has moved the circuit bench of the Calcutta High Court over the name of one of two lions brought to the state from Tripura.&nbsp;
On February 12, two lions were brought from Tripura's Sepahijala Zoological Park to the Bengal Safari Park in Siliguri. One of the lions, who is seven years old was named Akbar and the other lion, who is six years old was named Sita.&nbsp;
However, the VHP did not approve of the names and they said that Akbar's companion cannot be Sita. Akbar is the name of a Mughal emperor and Sita is the wife of Hindu go Ram.&nbsp;
VHP district chief Dulal Chandra Ray to The Wire that such naming of lions is an attack on the Hindu religion. Ray also said, "The lioness which was brought to the Bengal Safari Park has been named Sita. This has hurt the Hindu religion. We are strongly opposed to such a name and have thus come to the court to seek recourse."
This case will be heard in court on February 20.&nbsp;

Originally posted on Facebook by a profile named 'Madamannudon' (now Ann Isaan Russia) in December 2023, the video gained widespread attention after resurfacing on X.
The footage shows a man behind the wheel of a Bentley, with a lion cub wearing a chained collar in the back seat. The video was later shared on X by a user named Bangkok Boy, leading to an official investigation against the owner of the lion cub.
The post on X sparked outrage, with users condemning the act as animal cruelty. Questions about the legality of keeping a lion as a pet and taking it out in public were also raised by several internet users.&nbsp;
Others reacted to the video saying the lion was living a real fancy life.&nbsp;
Local authorities, action on the video, initiated a probe into the incident, revealing that the video was recorded in the Bang Lamung district of Chonburi province. The person driving the car was identified as the friend of the lion cub's owner, who hails from India. Officials are currently trying to locate the friend for further investigation.
While owning exotic animals is legal in Thailand, they must be registered under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The owner of the lion cub, identified as Sawangjit Kosoongnern, had legal permission to keep the animal at home. However, taking the lion cub out in public without proper approval violated regulations.
"Sawangjit did violate laws concerning the taking of a wild animal out in public and moving its location without prior permission," stated the department's chief, as reported by the South China Morning Post.
