Azam Cheema, who helped plan and execute the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, has died of heart attack, reports say.

Key conspirator of Mumbai&rsquo;s 26/11 attacks Azam Cheema has reportedly died of a heart attack in Pakistan&rsquo;s Faisalabad. He was 70. Top intelligence sources told India Today that the Lashkar-e-Taiba commander&rsquo;s funeral was held in Malkhanwala village.
Reports say that Cheema was the mastermind of the 2008 terrorist attacks, which resulted in the death of 166 people and 18 security personnel in Mumbai.&nbsp;
Wanted by the US, Cheema was designated by the US as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation shortly after the 9/11 attacks. Washington considered him a key commander in Lashkar-e-Taiba and was believed to be closely associated with Osama Bin Laden.
&ldquo;He taught the jihadis to spot vital installations of India on the map. He would also instruct LeT terrorists across India via satellite phone in the mid 2000s,&rdquo; a source told Times of India.
Cheema also reportedly was involved in the training of the 10 terrorists who landed on the shores of Mumbai in November 2008. &ldquo;He would occasionally visit Karachi and Lahore training camps as well,&rdquo; another source told TOI.

A Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist, who was involved in the killing of an Army personnel and non-local labourers, was on Friday killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, police said.
Acting on specific information about presence of a terrorist in Chotigam village of the south Kashmir district, a cordon and search operation was launched in the early hours by security forces, a police spokesman said.
As the security forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding terrorist fired indiscriminately upon them, which was retaliated effectively, leading to an encounter, the spokesman said.
In the ensuing encounter, a terrorist was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of the encounter, he said.
The spokesman identified the slain ultra as Bilal Ahmed Bhat, a resident of Chek Cholan, affiliated with the proscribed terror outfit LeT.
Bhat was involved in several terror crime cases, including the killing of local Army personnel Umer Fayaz, A resident of Sudsan Kulgam and had hurled a grenade upon non-local labourers in Hermain, resulting in the death of two labourers, the spokesman said.
Bhat was also involved in the killing of Kashmiri Pandit Sunil Kumar Bhat, and injuring another Kashmiri Pandit Pretimber Nath, both residents of Chotigam Shopian.
He was also involved in the attack on local Bal Krishan alias Sonu, a resident of Chotigam.
&ldquo;Bhat was involved in instigating local youth to join terrorist ranks and induced 12 local youth into the ranks of terrorists. Besides other terror crimes, he was also involved in the killing of an arrested terrorist who was leading the search party during a cordon and search operation at Nowgam in 2022,&rdquo; the spokesman added.
Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition, including an AK series rifle, and three magazines were recovered from the site of the encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes, the spokesman said.

According to reports, a group of unknown men opened fire at Farooq near a religious institution in the Samanabad area on September 30.
The 30-year-old, who suffered bullet wounds in the back, died during treatment at a hospital.
A minor boy was also injured in the attack.

26/11 Mumbai attack: US court approves Tahawwur Rana's extradition to India

Tahawwur Rana is a Canadian businessman of Pakistani origin.

In another step towards justice for victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, an American court has cleared the extradition of Tahawwur Rana to India. The court order dated May 16, 2023, was released a day later.
The Canadian businessman of Pakistani origin had been arrested in the USA on India's extradition request.
Rana has been accused of being part of the conspiracy to attack Mumbai in November 2008. He allegedly helped his childhood friend David Coleman Headley who was involved with the Pakistani terror organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba.
The judge said that sufficient competent evidence has been presented to establish probable cause that Rana is the individual who has been charged in India and whose extradition has been sought by India in this action, and that Rana committed the aforementioned offences for which extradition has been sought.
"It is therefore ordered that Tahawwur Hussain Rana be and remain committed to the custody of the United States Marshal pending a final decision on extradition and surrender by the Secretary of State to India for the trial of the offences as to which extradition has been granted pursuant to Title 18, United States Code, section 3186 and the Treaty,&rdquo; the judge ruled.

China has put a hold on a proposal by India and the US at the United Nations to list Lashkar-e-Taiba leader Shahid Mahmood as a global terrorist, the fourth instance in as many months that Beijing has blocked bids to blacklist Pakistan-based terrorists at the world body.
It is learnt that China, an all-weather ally of Pakistan, placed a hold on the proposal by India and the US to designate Mahmood, 42, as a global terrorist under the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council.
The US Department of Treasury had designated Mahmood as well as another LeT leader Muhammad Sarwar in December 2016 as part of the action &ldquo;to disrupt Lashkar-e Taiba&rsquo;s (LeT) fundraising and support networks.&rdquo; The decision to hold comes at a time when UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is in India and has paid homage to the victims of the 26/11 attack in Mumbai. The Terror attack carried out by LeT in which over 160 people, including American citizens, were killed.
According to information on the US Department of the Treasury&rsquo;s website, Mahmood &ldquo;has been a longstanding senior LeT member based in Karachi, Pakistan, and has been affiliated with the group since at least 2007. As early as June 2015 through at least June 2016, Mahmood served as the vice chairman of Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation (FIF), a humanitarian and fundraising arm of LeT.&rdquo; In 2014, Mahmood was the leader of FIF in Karachi. In August 2013, Mahmood was identified as a LeT publications wing member, the website said.
&ldquo;Mahmood was previously part of LeT&rsquo;s overseas operations team led by Sajjid Mir...Additionally, in August 2013, Mahmood was instructed to forge covert links with Islamic organisations in Bangladesh and Burma, and as of late 2011, Mahmood claimed that LeT&rsquo;s primary concern should be attacking India and America,&rdquo; the US Department of Treasury said.

A Pakistani terrorist who plotted attacks against India, claimed to have been dead for years, and suddenly arrested and jailed a few days ago.
In an interesting turn of events, terrorist Sajid Majeed Mir has been sentenced to 15 and a half years in prison. He was part of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack plot, and had been declared dead by Pakistani authorities earlier.
An anti-terrorism court in Lahore issued the verdict in early June. Mir had been incarcerated at Lahore's Kot Lakhpat prison since his arrest in April. An embarrassed Islamabad apparently tried to keep the case under wraps with the Counter Terrorism Department of Punjab Police not notifying the conviction.

Sajid Mir is a Lashkar-e-Taiba operative who is on the Most Wanted lists in India and USA. He acted as the 'project manager' of the 26/11 conspiracy, and handled the plotting and reconnaissance operations. Mir recruited David Headley, who had visited India to carry out surveys of the areas which were eventually attacked. Mir is also accused of conspiring to carry out attacks in Denmark.
He now joins other top Lashkar operatives in prison. These include chief of the terror organisation, Hafiz Saeed - the mastermind of the 26/11 attacks. He has been sentenced to 68 years in prison in terror financing cases. However, he is expected to spend very little time in jail as the sentences will run concurrently.
Another Lashkar terrorist in jail is Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. He acted as the operational commander of the 26/11 conspiracy. He is also in jail under terror financing charges.

So, why is Pakistan suddenly taking action against terrorists, after years of letting them roam free?
The country is currently trying to exit the 'grey list' of the Financial Action Task Force, or FATF. Islamabad was placed in the grey list in 2018 for allowing terror financing and money laundering from its territory. In order to exit the grey list, Pakistan has to take action against terrorists. To verify that effective action has truly been taken, FATF officials are slated to visit the country soon.
If Pakistan fails to convince FATF that it is cracking down on terrorist networks, then it might be relegated to the 'black list'. This would lead to imposition of sanctions. Foreign investments and loans will dry up, and trade with other countries will become extremely difficult.
Pakistan is already struggling with economic distress along with political instability.If the FATF decides to penalise Islamabad, it might just push the country into a Sri Lanka-like situation.
But it is also difficult to believe that a country which has encouraged terrorism for many decades, has suddenly decided to clean up its act. So, is the jailing of sinister terrorists justice, or just a show?
