The Lancet Respiratory Journal which has already raised alarm bells over the contagious tomato fever has warned that young children between 1 to 5 years are more vulnerable to the disease as viral infections are common in this age group.
It further cautioned that if the outbreak of tomato flu in children is not controlled and prevented, it might lead be spreading in adults as well, as a result.
The report stated that children are at increased risk of exposure to tomato flu as viral infections are common in this age group and spread is likely to be through close contact.
The kids are also prone to this infection through use of nappies, touching unclean surfaces, as well as putting things directly into the mouth.
The rare viral infection has got its name on the basis of the eruption of red and painful blisters throughout the body that gradually enlarges to the size of a tomato, is currently in an "endemic state".
It is caused by the intestinal viruses and is also believed to be a variation of hand, foot and mouth disease and an aftereffect of Chikungunya and dengue.

Symptomatic kids are tested for dengue, chikungunya, zika virus, varicella-zoster virus, and herpes. Once these viral infections are ruled out, contraction of tomato virus is confirmed, the Lancet study notes.

To be noted, the first case of tomato fever was reported in Kerala’s Kollam district in May this year. Since then, the disease has spread to Tamil Nadu and Odisha. No severe-vaccine-related deaths or adverse events were recorded during a randomized trial involving 24,419 participants aged 18-97 years between Nov. 2020 and May 2021 in India, the medical journal said.There are however limitations the study cited.&nbsp;The authors of the Covaxin study have noted that the data are preliminary, and more research with a larger sample size is needed.&nbsp;This however comes as a booster to Bharat&nbsp;Biotech&nbsp;who recently received the nod from&nbsp;WHO for emergency use listing (EUL) for the jab which enables those vaccinated with it to be eligible for travel to international such as UK and US.&nbsp;

According to the study, life expectancy in India has risen from 59.6 years in 1990 to 70.8 years in 2019, ranging from 77.3 years in Kerala to 66.9 years in Uttar Pradesh. The researchers also pointed out that increase in India&rsquo;s healthy life expectancy has not been as dramatic as the growth of life expectancy since 'people are living more years with illness and disability.'
