The 10-day Ganesh festival began in Maharashtra with chants, decorations, and celebrations. For the first time, the state has declared it an official festival.

The 10-day Ganesh festival began in Maharashtra on Wednesday, with people enthusiastically welcoming their favourite elephant-headed god into their homes, housing complexes, and public pandals.
Chants of &lsquo;Ganpati Bappa Morya, Mangal Murti Morya&rsquo; filled the morning air as small, medium and large idols of the deity, accompanied by rhythmic beats of &lsquo;dhol-tasha&rsquo;, made their way into the devotees&rsquo; hearts and homes.
Elaborate decorations have been put up all over Mumbai to welcome the Lord, revered as the harbinger of prosperity and destroyer of obstacles.
For the first time, the Maharashtra government has declared the Ganesh celebrations as a state festival.
Multiple activities, programmes, celebrations and competitions have been organised by the state culture department during these ten days of festivities.
Mandals have been urged to take initiatives to raise awareness of the 12 forts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj that have been accorded the UNESCO World Heritage status as well as Operation Sindoor and the spirit of &lsquo;swadeshi&rsquo;.
The Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti, the apex coordinating body of Ganesh mandals (groups that celebrate the festival in public places) in the city has appealed to its members to ensure smooth and disciplined organisation of the festival. It has also urged the mandals to keep the festival apolitical in view of the upcoming civic polls, stressing that Ganeshotsav is rooted in culture and devotion.
According to the Mumbai police, 17,600 of its personnel will man the streets in the metropolis. A horse mounted police unit, drones, bomb detection and disposal squad and dog squads are also part of their elaborate deployment.
Lakhs of devotees visit some of the popular pandals like &lsquo;Lalbaugcha Raja&rsquo; during the festival. Other well-known mandals in the area include Chinchpokli, Ganesh Gully and Tejukaya.
The GSB Seva Mandal at King&rsquo;s Circle, known for its Lord Ganesha adorned with gold jewellery, is considered one of the wealthiest mandals.
Other cities in the state have also put in similar arrangements to usher in the festival in a joyous manner.

The legend of Lalbaugcha Raja dates back to the early 1930s, when local devotees created the first idol. Over the years, it has evolved from a modest offering into one of Mumbai&rsquo;s most revered Ganesh idols.
Back in the 1900s, the Lalbaug area in the city comprised about 100 textile mills which began to boom by the 1930s. However, this negatively impacted the lives of the locals there.
As the lore goes, the community collectively turned to Bappa in reverence, praying for a smooth passage to resolution. Their prayers were soon answered after they were granted a plot of land which is today known as the Lalbaug market.
A portion of the plot was dedicated to Lord Ganesha and evolved to become the Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandal which is where the King of Lalbaug is now installed year on year.
The festival has since become a symbol of unity, faith, and Mumbai's rich cultural heritage.

Mumbai's famous 'The Lalbaugcha Raja' Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal revealed the first appearance on September 15, a famous Ganesha statue in Mumbai.
The mandal (group) was started in 1934 at Lalbaug Market in South Mumbai. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Lalbaug cha Raja Ganpati.
The place where many devotees come every year to seek blessings from Lord Ganesha will be open from Tuesday, September 19 to Thursday, September 28.

The chance to see Lalbaugcha Raja Ganpati will start on September 19.&nbsp;
You can visit and see the idol anytime until September 28, 2023.
For Lalbaugcha Raja, there are two lines&mdash;the 'Navsachi line' and the 'Mukh Darshanachi line'.
Navsachi line: This line is for devotees to go on stage, touch the deity&rsquo;s feet, and receive his blessings.&nbsp;
Mukh Darshanachi: This line is only for devotees to see the idol from a distance.
The 'Navsachi line' has more crowd than the 'Mukh Darshanachi line' and the waiting period might extend to 5-6 hours as well.
