Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and the men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty battled their way into the pre-quarterfinals but it was curtains for Lakshya Sen in the very first round of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament here on Tuesday.
Sindhu overcame long-time rival Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 22-20, 21-23, 21-15 in an absorbing one-hour and 19-minute clash in the women's singles.
I have been losing in the first rounds (of late) so it was very much useful and important for me to win matches like these," said Sindhu after her match.
Sindhu faces sixth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand in the round of 16.
Sen, the 2021 World Championships bronze medallist, fought valiantly before falling 11-21 22-20 15-21 to world number two Shi Yu Qi of China in a gripping first-round men's singles contest that lasted 65 minutes.
Shi had entered the event as world number one but dropped a rung in fresh rankings issued on Tuesday, soon after his contest.
The 23-year-old Sen, returning from a back injury that ruled him out of last week's tournament in Malaysia, showed remarkable resilience. Trailing 11-17 in the second game, he mounted a spirited comeback, saving a match point and clinching the game 22-20 to force a decider.
However, the momentum proved short-lived as Shi grabbed control in the third game to seal the match.
HS Prannoy also bowed out from the USD 1,450,000 tournament. The 2023 World Championships bronze medallist lost 17-21, 18-21 to Indonesia's Alwi Farhan.
Later, Satwik and Chirag made it to the round of 16 after beating the Indonesian duo of Leo Rolly Carnando and Bagas Maulana 18-21 21-18 21-14 in their opening-round match that lasted 67 minutes.
Sindhu vs Okuhara ============ Sindhu and Okuhara, both of whom former world champions, have struggled in recent times. While Sindhu's best performance this season was a quarterfinal finish at the India Open in January, Okuhara hasn't made it past the second round in six events.
The two stars added another chapter to their storied rivalry, engaging in a war of attrition in an error-marred match that had plenty of game points and match points.
"It is always good to play with her, obviously it is not easy but at the same time I would have finished it off in two sets but I should have been a little more cautious because I had two match points," Sindhu said.
The decider followed a familiar pattern of conservative play, with neither of the two taking undue risks.
Sindhu led 11-9 at the break and then unleashed a series of winners to surge to 20-12. The Indian star earned eight match points and sealed the win by converting the fifth to book her spot in the round of 16.
The win helped Sindhu improve her head-to-head to 11-9 against Okuhara, who had defeated the Indian in the 2017 World Championships.
Sindhu acknowledged that the game has changed a lot in the last few years.
"If you see now the women's circuit, it is more of like you know those long rallies, less of attack and defense have become very strong like at that point of time it was like we were attacking mostly and then you know it was all like a faster speed game," she said. She also noticed improvement in her game but admitted that fitness is still a work in progress.
"After the India Open, it has been a bit of a struggle. It has been a rough patch the last couple of games but I can see there is a bit of improvement like the last tournament. You need to keep trying patiently so that you get that rhythm," she said.
"I am happy but I need to definitely improve a lot more and be injury free and of course focus on my skill." Sindhu was the lone Indian woman to advance to the next round.
Malvika Bansod retired mid-way through her women's singles match against Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia. She was leading 21-16 16-15 before she slipped on the court and clutched her knee in pain before retiring.

Back on court for the first time since their withdrawal from the All England Open in March due to Chirag&rsquo;s back injury, the former world No.1 displayed no signs of rust as they beat Malaysia&rsquo;s Choong Hon Jian and Muhammad Haikal 21-16, 21-13 in just under 40 minutes in the round of 32.
It was Satwik and Chirag&rsquo;s second win over the 41st-ranked Malaysian pair. The Indians are currently ranked 27th in the world.
The pair had also missed the Sudirman Cup earlier this month, with Satwik battling health concerns. Prior to that, they had made semifinal appearances at both the Malaysia Open and India Open this season.
India's no 1 singles player Sen was forced to retire hurt during his opening-round clash against Lin Chun-Yi of Chinese Taipei.
Sen, currently ranked 17th in the world, started strong and took the first game 21-15. But his opponent, world No. 19 Lin, bounced back to claim the second 21-17.
The match was evenly poised in the decider when Sen trailed 5-13 before he retired due to injury. The exact nature of Sen's injury is not known.
In mixed doubles, Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde advanced into the pre-quarters defeating the American pair of Chen Zhi Yi and Francesca Corbett 21-16, 21-19 in 35 minutes.
In the women's singles, Aakarshi Kashyap put up a spirited fight but ultimately went down to world No. 4 Han Yue of China 21-17, 13-21, 7-21 in a 58-minute contest.
Kashyap, ranked 46th in the world, started well and took the opening game 21-17.
However, the third seeded Han bounced back strongly to win the next two games 21-13, 21-7, showcasing her superior control.

Indian shuttlers Lakshya Sen and P V Sindhu will train in France and Germany respectively as part of their Olympic preparations after the Sports Ministry's Mission Olympic Cell approved financial assistance to cover the cost for both of them.
Sen had sought financial assistance for a 12-day training session in Marseille, France. Sen, who will compete in the men's singles event in Paris, will train at The Halle des Sports Parsemain with his coach and support staff from July 8 to 21 ahead of the Olympic Games.
Sindhu's proposal was for Saarbrucken, Germany to train at the Hermann-Neuberger Sportschule. She will practice there for over a month along with her coach and support staff before heading to Paris.
"MOC approved their funding their airfare, boarding/lodging cost, local transportation charges, Visa Fees, shuttlecocks expenses under the Ministry's Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)," the ministry said in a release.
During the meeting, MOC also approved table tennis player Sreeja Akula and archer Tisha Punia's proposals for support to procure equipment and golfer Aditi Ashok and swimmer Aryan Nehra's request for assistance to travel to various competitions.
"TOPS will fund their airfare, accommodation cost, local transportation cost Aryan's equipment and Aditi's caddy fee." MOC also approved the inclusion of Table Tennis player Harmeet Desai and the Women's 4x400 Relay Team in the TOPS Core group and the promotion of wrestlers Nisha (68kg) and Reetika (76kg) to the Core group.
MOC also inducted upcoming golfer Kartik Singh in TOPS Development with a focus towards the 2028 and 2032 Olympics in Los Angeles and Brisbane respectively.

&nbsp;Star Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen bowed in the opening round of men's singles at the Badminton Asia Championships after suffering a straight-game loss to local favourite and top seed Shi Yu Qi here on Wednesday.
World Championships bronze medallist Sen gave a good account of himself and fought tooth and nail but the higher-ranked Chinese eventually proved to be too strong as the Indian lost 19-21 15-21 in the gruelling opener that lasted 53 minutes.

Rajawat was no match for eight-seeded Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia, losing 9-21 13-21 in 39 minutes.
It was also curtains for the Panda sisters -- Rutuparna and Swetaparna -- in the opening round of women's doubles, losing 8-21 13-21 against seventh seeds Zhang Shu Xian and Zheng Yu W of China.
Contrary to the final result, Sen gave his Chinese opponent a run for his money in the first game and didn't allow him an aggressive start.
Sen showcased brilliant court coverage and indulged the Chinese in long rallies before picking up points with his smashes and inch-perfect drop shots to lead 11-7 at the change of ends.
Sen kept his nose ahead till 14 points even as Qi started to claw back into the contest, tiring out Sen with long rallies and then finishing the points with cross-court smashes.
The world No. 2 Qi eventually took the lead at 16-14 by securing five points in a row.
But Sen was in no mood to give up without a fight as he drew level at 19-19 before Qi pocketed the first game.
The script was similar in the second game, as both the shuttlers were going neck and neck till the halfway break.
Sen worked hard to keep the rallies alive and made some brilliant diving saves to not allow easy points to his opponent, and at one point led 9-8.
Sen didn't give up and dived deep to save a point and then brought the equation down to 11-12.
But then unforced errors started to creep into the Indian's game. He lost steam and conceded easy points as Qi regained control and ran away with the second game.&nbsp;

The 22-year-old from Almora had reached the semifinals in Birmingham and his effort saw him improve to world number 12 from the 15th spot a week back in the Olympic Games Qualification.
The top 16 in the world by April-end will cut the Olympics.
HS Prannoy is at number 9 in the Paris race and Sen too is primed to cut.
Sen had reached a career-best ranking of world number six in November 2022 but saw his rankings plummet to world No. 25 in April last year. He recovered to the 11th spot by August but fell to 20 early this year following a series of early exits.
His Olympic qualification too was in the doldrums after a series of first-round exits, including in Malaysia and India this season. But back-to-back semifinals in French Open and All England brought him back.
Among others, World Championships and Asian Games bronze medallist HS Prannoy was in ninth position, followed by Kidambi Srikanth ( 27th) and Priyanshu Rajawat (32nd).
In the women's singles, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu is in the 11th position.
The Indian men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty was at the top position, while Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto were ranked 20th. Compatriots Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand slipped to 26th place.

Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen's hopes of making the cut at Paris Olympics received a boost as he grabbed the 15th position in the latest Olympic Games Qualification rankings following his semifinal finish at last week's French Open badminton tournament.

Things were not looking good after his first-round losses in Malaysia Super 1000 and India Super 750 as he stayed world No. 19 in the Olympic Games qualification for a few weeks but a semifinal finish at the Super 750 event in the French capital last week saw him take his tally to 74,897 points.
The 2021 World Championships bronze medallist also climbed a spot to world number 18 in the BWF World rankings issued on Tuesday.
However, the 2023 World Championships bronze medallist HS Prannoy slipped to eighth in the world ranking as well as in the Olympic Games qualification following his first-round loss last week, though he still remains the top-ranked Indian singles player in the race, while Kidambi Srikanth is ranked 26th.
The top-16 in the world by April-end will make the cut for the Olympics.
Among others, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu (60,742), who finished at the quarterfinal stage in Paris last week, was ranked 13th in Paris qualification.
In women's doubles, the race to Paris is heating up with Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Jolly at 20th spot, six places ahead of compatriots Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand.
In the BWF world ranking, however, Treesa and Gayatri have toppled Ashwini-Tanisha to 22nd spot.
French Open champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are ranked world number one in BWF World ranking but are placed second in the Olympic Games qualification.

World Ranked 30th, Rajawat staged a comeback after losing the first game to defeat WR19 Sen 16-21 21-16 21-13 in a 75-minute affair.
It was a second straight first-round exit for Sen that further jeopardises his Olympic qualification chances.
Indian WR9 Prannoy dished out a compact game to outwit WR13 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei 21-6 21-19 in 42 minutes earlier in the day.
Prannoy will take on Rajawat in the second round.
Among other Indians, Kiran George went down 12-21 15-21 to Chinese Taipei's Wang Tzu Wei, while women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand lost narrowly 21-18 14-21 13-21 to WR4 Japanese nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida.
Former World Championship bronze medallist Sen couldn't play his attacking game and lacked the patience to construct the rallies.
Low in confidence, Sen made too many unforced errors, while Rajawat played more freely and his sharp strokes troubled his compatriot.
Sen did well to break off from 10-10 in the opening game to earn the bragging rights but Rajawat returned the favour in the second as he led 11-5 at the interval before shutting it comfortably to take the match to the decider.
In the third game, Rajawat galloped to a 9-1 lead and even though Sen narrowed it down to 9-11, the 21-year-old from Madhya Pradesh moved ahead as Sen crumbled.
"I was prepared that I have to win this match because I had lost last time and I was really sad, so I just wanted to hang in there after losing the first game," Rajawat said.
"I was leading 18-14 in the third game last time so I just wanted to play my 100 per cent and didnt want to take anything lightly, so I was expecting him to make a comeback, so wanted to finish it quickly." Talking about his match, Prannoy said: "The planning was spot on in the first game. I was executing good shots from back of the court. He was not getting the length well, so I had to wrap it up," Prannoy said after the match.
"In the second game, he was pushing the speed and finishing a lot of shuttle from the back but I was happy to fight back from 11-16 and towards the end, I was playing the right game.
"It was important to close it in two games because if it is the third game, then it is always a tough one as he (Chen) pushes with his experience." Prannoy got into a nice rhythm right at the start, mixing his half smashes, drops and tosses from the back court.
Chen struggled to negotiate the length of the shuttle that Prannoy was playing and ended up committing too many errors. Soon, the Indian had an overwhelming 11-2 lead at the break.
He continued to dominate the rallies as Chen surrendered the opening game meekly in the end.
A small crowd had gathered by the time Prannoy took the court and chants of "HSP" and "India" filled the air at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall.
Prannoy, who was silently going about his business till then, started celebrating his points gusto in the second game which had begun on an even note.
However, he found himself 11-16 down when Chen stepped up and started playing some good cross-court shots from the back.
Just when it seemed the match will go into the decider, Prannoy fought back to be at 16-16 with a precise net return.
The Indian played more soft shots and drew Chen to the nets, extracting errors from his opponent to eventually nose ahead.

Describing the Canada Open victory as one the "greatest comebacks" in his nascent career, star Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen on Monday said the win against the reigning All England Champion gives him confidence and belief in the Olympic qualification year.
Sen saved four game points in the second game of the final to outwit China's Li Shi Feng of China 21-18 22-20, snapping a 17-month wait for a BWF world tour title.
"Coming into the Olympic qualification year, it was tough as things didn't go my way," Sen, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, told PTI.
"So this will be one of the good tournaments for me and playing the finals like that is for me one of the greatest comebacks." Following the highs of early 2022, Sen endured a low this season after being bothered by the effects of nose surgery that he underwent to treat a deviated septum following the World Championships last August.
His recovery process extended from three months to over eight months and his struggles were reflected in his performance. He made first-round exits from the last four events of 2022 and found the going tough in the early part of 2023.
His ranking also plunged to world number 25 from six.
"I was training well but post-surgery, I was falling sick and immunity was not well, I had a lot of health issues. I couldn't play 100 per cent. I had prepared well for All England, but again couldn't do well," he said.

The 21-year-old from Almora, who had claimed his maiden Super 500 title at the 2022 India Open, mixed incredible speed and power to outshine reigning All England champion Feng 21-18 22-20 in a thrilling summit clash.

Star Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen dished out a badminton masterpiece to notch up his second BWF Super 500 title with a straight-game win over Li Shi Feng of China in the final of the Canada Open.
The 21-year-old from Almora, who had claimed his maiden Super 500 title at the 2022 India Open, mixed incredible speed and power to outshine reigning All England champion Feng 21-18 22-20 in a thrilling summit clash.
"Coming into the Olympic qualification year, it was tough as things didn't go my way. So this win will be a big boost to my confidence," Sen told PTI after the win.
"I had to dig deep in some matches, the conditions were different and getting used to it was important," the ace shuttler said.
This was Sen's first title since claiming his maiden gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in August last year. He is also the second singles player from the country to win a title this year, following HS Prannoy's victory at Malaysia Masters in May.
Sen gave ample display of his temperament as he saved four game points in the second game to grab a championship point and sealed it on very first opportunity with a smash and collapsed on the court in relief and happiness after an intense match.
The duo played some extraordinary rallies, filled with fast-paced exchanges at the net and it was Sen, who kept things tight to notch up his fifth win in seven meetings against the Chinese.
This win will be a much-needed boost for Sen, who had slipped to world No. 19 after struggling to find his form early in the season.
A former world No. 6, Sen, who claimed bronze at the 2021 World Championships, had undergone nose surgery for a deviated septum after the World Championships last August and took a lot of time to recover post-treatment.
In a battle of power and precision between the two youngsters, it was Sen, who showed better control and temperament to come up trumps against the world No. 10 from China.
Sen kept it tight at the net and produced a series of down-the-line and cross-court smashes to trouble Li Shi Feng, who fell behind 2-6 at the start of the opening game.
The duo played a high-speed game with both dishing out some eye-catching jump smashes. While Li sent down two 390kmph smashes, Sen unleashed a couple of 400 kmph thunderbolts.
At the mid-game interval, Sen managed to hold a three-point cushion after Li failed to negotiate a body return from the Indian.
Both the players sent down a series of hard smashes from the back to gather points but unforced errors saw Li fall back at 12-15. He managed to level par at 15-15 but Sen managed to grab three game points with another trademark straight smash.
Another precise return on his opponent's forehand helped him to earn the bragging rights.
The Chinese waited for his opportunity, engaging Sen in some sensational rallies at the net and pounced on anything weak from the Indians. He grabbed the momentum after an initial duel which left them at 5-5 to soon enter the break with a four-point lead.
With Li winning the net battle, Sen tried to change his tactics and made it 13-14 at one stage. But the Chinese managed to move ahead and grabbed four game points with a powerful return which Sen miscued.
However, Sen showed his grit as a forehand body smash was followed by another hard smash. Li then faltered at the net and Sen followed it with another smash to level the score.
Another rally ended with a precise return on Li's forehand as it was advantage Sen and he sealed it with another power-packed smash in the end.
The BWF World Tour is divided into six levels, namely World Tour Finals, four Super 1000, six Super 750, seven Super 500, and 11 Super 300.
One other category of the tournament, the BWF Tour Super 100 level, also offers ranking points.v

Sen, who has slipped to world number 19 after struggling to find his form early in the season, saw off the world number 11 Japanese 21-17 21-14 to enter his only second Super 500 final and first BWF summit clash in over a year.
The 21-year-old Indian, who claimed a bronze at the 2021 World Championships, will face China's Li Shi Feng in the final on Sunday.
Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, however, couldn't produce her top game and went down 14-21 15-21 to world no. 1 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in her women&rsquo;s singles semifinal.

Sen struggled to find his length early on and sprayed the shuttle long and at the net to find himself 0-4 down at the start of the match but he slowly engaged his rival in rallies to catch up at 8-8.
Nishimoto managed to hold a slender 11-10 lead at the interval after Sen sprayed one at the net but soon the Indian turned the tables after resumption and kept moving ahead.
His trademark smashes, quick movements and precision in returns helped him to stay a step ahead as he wrapped up the game when his opponent hit long.
The second game started on an even note as the duo fought tooth and nail initially but once again Sen found his way as he was more alert. He kept a grip on the fast rallies.
From 2-2, the duo moved to 9-9 before Sen managed a two-point cushion at the break after Nishimoto hit long.
The Japanese sent the shuttle long even as Sen pounced on anything weak and produced some exquisite smashes to move to 19-11.
A body return earned Sen seven match points and he sealed it on the second attempt when Nishimoto found the net again.
The BWF World Tour is divided into six levels, namely World Tour Finals, four Super 1000, six Super 750, seven Super 500, and 11 Super 300.
One other category of the tournament, the BWF Tour Super 100 level, also offers ranking points.

Meanwhile, the chief coach of Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, Vimal Kumar said in a statement that the allegations were "baseless, frivolous and made with malicious intent".
The complainant alleged that Kumar colluded with Lakshya's parents to forge a birth certificate in 2010. If the charges are proven, the star Indian shuttler, who was awarded the Arjuna recently, will have to forego a lot of his records.
Lakshya was also a runner-up in the All England Championships and played a key role in India's historic Thomas Cup triumph earlier this year.
