Lakshadweep is "very sensitive and ecologically very fragile," MP Mohammad Faizal warned in an interview with NDTV, amid the rising tourist interest in the islands.
The Indian archipelago emerged a hot favourite in searches on travel sites after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit and the standoff with Maldives. However, the "integrated Island management plan" set up by the Justice Ravindran Commission limits the number of tourists that can be allowed into the islands on any day, among other restrictions imposed.
Faizal calls it the "bible" for any form of development in Lakshadweep, be it roads, jetties or other infrastructure projects.
The Commission suggests capping "the number of resorts and private tourist homes, so that the total tourist capacity at any given point of time does not exceed the permitted tourist carrying capacity of the respective islands."
In lieu of the recommendations, the Lakshadweep is focusing on maximising revenue through "high-end controlled tourism," according to Faizal. The entry is restricted, and requires a permit issued by the Administration.
India&rsquo;s smallest Union Territory Lakshadweep is a group of 36 islands in the Arabian Sea, of which only ten are inhabited.
With the sandy beaches and abundance of flora and fauna, many social media users are comparing it to globally sought-after destinations like Maldives and Seychelles. But, the lack of direct flights and very few options for accommodation have prevented it from turning into a tourist hotspot. Moreover, Lakshadweep cannot handle a major influx of tourists considering the environmental constraints.
Interest in Lakshadweep peaked on social media after the Prime Minister posted pictures of his visit to the archipelago.&nbsp;
Some Maldivian ministers made derogatory comments against Modi's widely circulated posts, triggering a diplomatic standoff with the island nation. A boycott Maldives and "chalo Lakshadweep" trend popped up among Indian social media users raising tourist interest in the Indian islands.

The government sources said that even though proposals for an airfield has been moved in the past, the plan has been revived recently. The airfield would help India in monitoring Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean region.

Even as India is looking to promote the Lakshadweep islands for tourism, India is now planning to develop a new airfield at the Minicoy Islands there that would be capable of operating military aircraft, including fighter jets, along with commercial ones.
"The plan is to have a joint airfield that would be capable of operating fighter jets, military transport planes and commercial aircraft," government sources told ANI.
Even though the proposals have been moved to the government for developing this new airfield in the Minicoy Islands in the past too, this plan of having a joint-use defence airfield has been revived in recent times and is being actively progressed, they informed.
From the military point of view, the airfield would give India a strong capability as it can be used as a base to keep an eye on the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean region.
The Indian Coast Guard was the first force under the Defence Ministry to suggest the development of an airstrip in the Minicoy Islands. As per the present proposal, the Indian Air Force would be in the lead to run the operations from Minicoy.
The airport at Minicoy would also give the defence forces the capability to extend their area of surveillance in the Arabian Sea. The airport at Minicoy would also provide a boost to tourism in the region, as has been planned by the government.
There is only one airstrip in the island territory at the moment, which is in Agatti and it can also limit the types of aircraft. The proposal for the development of a new airport and extending the present facilities has been revived recently.
The island territory has been the centre of discussion and attraction since the visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi there last week.
Politicians in the Maldives' ruling party have been trying to criticise the Indian plans to promote Lakshadweep as a tourist attraction and have tweeted against India.

Former Maldives Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi on Monday said that 'derogatory' comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi demonstrate the "short-sightedness" of the Maldives government, adding that India has been a reliable ally, providing assistance in various sectors, including defense, and criticized any attempt to undermine the longstanding relationship.
She further expressed disappointment over disparaging remarks, highlighting India as the "911 call" for the Maldives, always coming to their rescue in times of need.
"It is the short-sightedness on the part of the present administration... We are a small country who are friends with all, but we cannot deny that we share borders with India. We share similar security concerns. India has always helped us. They have been helping us even in the defence sector with capacity building, providing us with equipment, and trying to make us more self-sufficient,"Mariya Ahmed Didi said.
She said that Maldives and India are like-minded in their quest for democracy and respect for human rights. "It's a very short-sightedness on the part of the present government to really think that we can really try to not keep the age-old relationship that we have always had with India..." she said.
A massive row was triggered last week as Maldives deputy minister, along with other cabinet members and government officials, made disparaging and unsavoury references to PM Modi's Lakshadweep visit. Meanwhile, the former Maldives Defence Minister said "... India has been our 911 call, whenever we need it, we give a call and you all come to our rescue. That kind of a friend. When you see such disparaging remarks about friends like this, it is sad for everyone concerned."
She underscored the importance of maintaining the age-old relationship with India and expressed concerns about the negative impact of such remarks on the friendship between the two nations.

Meanwhile, the Maldivian envoy to India was on Monday summoned to the external affairs ministry and was conveyed strong concern over remarks posted on social media against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by a number of ministers of the Maldives, sources said.
The government of the Maldives on Sunday suspended three deputy ministers for derogatory social media posts against Modi.
The three deputy ministers criticised Modi for his post on 'X' following his visit to Lakshadweep, inferring that it was an attempt to project the Union Territory as an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives.
According to Maldivian media reports, deputy ministers in the youth ministry, Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid, have been suspended over their posts.
In New Delhi, official sources said the Indian high commission in Male strongly raised the matter with the Maldivian foreign ministry on Sunday.
The disparaging remarks by the ministers have drawn flak in India, with many celebrities urging people on X to explore domestic tourist destinations instead of going to the Maldives.

NCP Lakshadweep MP Mohammed Faizal was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on October 4 after the Kerala High Court rejected his plea to suspend his conviction in a murder attempt case.
This is the second time Faizal has been disqualified from the Parliament.
He was earlier disqualified in January after a sessions court convicted and sentenced him and three others to 10 years' jail on charges of attempting to kill Mohammed Salih, son-in-law of the late Union Minister PM Sayeed during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
Faizal's previous disqualification was revoked on March 29, months after the Kerala high court suspended his conviction and sentencing in the case.
However, in August 2023, the Supreme Court set aside the high court order.

In a major blow to Lakshadeep MP Mohammed Faizal, the Supreme Court on August 22 set aside the Kerala HC order suspending Faizal's conviction and sentencing in an attempt-to murder case.&nbsp;
The top court remanded the matter back to the high court and asked it to decide afresh the lawmaker's application seeking a stay of his conviction within this period.
Terming the Kerala High Court's approach as 'erroneous, the top court pointed out, that it considered only one aspect that the respondent was a member of Parliament.&nbsp;
The top court temporarily protected the status of Faizal as an MP, saying the benefit of the high court&rsquo;s impugned order, staying the suspension, will remain in operation during the period keeping in mind that there should not be any &ldquo;vacuum&rdquo; with regard to representation of the Lakshadweep Lok Sabha constituency in Parliament.

The Election Commission on Monday withheld the Lakshadweep Lok Sabha bypoll after the Kerala High Court suspended the conviction and sentence of Mohammed Faizal, the MP representing the constituency who later stood disqualified, in an attempt-to-murder case.
The poll panel had announced the bypoll recently and it was to be held on February 27. The gazette notification, kicking off the nomination process, was to be issued on Tuesday.
The bypoll was announced following Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Faizal's disqualification on the ground of his conviction by a sessions court in Kavaratti.
Faizal had approached the high court against the order. The high court has suspended the conviction and sentence imposed on him.
"After considering the matter and having due regard to the order passed by Hon'ble High Court of Kerala at Ernakulam.... The Election Commission of India has decided to withhold the by-election and defer the issuance of notification for holding the by-election," a statement issued by the poll panel said.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday to press him for the revocation of Faizal's disqualification.
"Met with Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla and requested him to revoke the disqualification of Nationalist Congress Party's MP Shri PP Mohammed Faizal," Pawar said in a tweet.
The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear next week a plea moved by the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, challenging the January 25 Kerala High Court order that suspended Faizal's conviction and sentence.&nbsp;

The court in Lakshadweep had on Wednesday sentenced four people, including Faizal, to 10 years in jail after they were found guilty in an attempt to murder case.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat has issued notification disqualifying Lakshadweep MP Mohammed Faizal, who was recently convicted in an attempt to murder case by a court in the union territory.
As per the notification issued on Friday, Faizal stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from January 11, the date of his conviction by a sessions court in Kavaratti.
The decision was taken under the provisions of Article 102 (l) (e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
"Consequent upon his conviction by the Court of Sessions, Kavaratti, Lakshadweep in Sessions case no. 01/2017, Shri Mohammed Faizal P.P., Member of Lok Sabha representing the Lakshadweep Parliamentary Constituency of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction i.e. 11 January, 2023 in terms of the provisions of Article 102(l)(e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951," it said.

Lawyers associated with the case said the District and Sessions Court in Kavaratti also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh each on the convicts in the attempt to murder case registered against them in 2009.
According to the lawyers, the MP and others attacked Padanath Salih, son-in-law of former Union Minister P M Sayeed, when they had reached their neighbourhood for intervening in a political issue during the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.
Speaking to PTI, Faizal said it was a 'politically motivated' case and he would file an appeal in the higher court soon.&nbsp;
