Sudden downpour caused stampede at Cochin University: officials

Four students at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) died and at least 64 were injured after a stampede at a concert on campus.

While the Kerala government has ordered a probe to ascertain causes behind the November 25 Cochin University stampede, a sudden downpour at the open air auditorium led to the stampede and subsequent deaths of four students, media reports quoting police officials have said.
The initial reports suggested that the stampede occurred during the singer Nikita Gandhi's performance but officials later said that the singer had not begun her performance when the tragedy struck.
Four people had died and 60 injured in the stampede on Saturday. Four students are reported to be critically injured.&nbsp;

48-year-old Dominic Martin, the main suspect in the serial blasts in Kerala's Kochi during a prayer meet on October 29 reportedly learnt bomb-making from the internet, NDTV reported.&nbsp;
The report stated that Martin has claimed he spent about Rs 3,000 to make the bombs. The accused worked in the Gulf for many years and he reportedly learnt how to put together an electronic device during his stint there. He returned from the Gulf two months ago, according to NDTV's source-based report.&nbsp;
It adds that low-grade explosives were used in the bombs made by Martin. He reportedly assembled the IEDs at his home.&nbsp;
The blasts were set off at a convention centre in Kalamassery near Kochi where a prayer meeting of the Jehovah's Witnesses -- a Christian religious group that originated in the US in the 19th century -- was held on Sunday.
A few hours after that, Martin, who claimed to be an estranged member of Jehovah's Witnesses, surrendered before police in Thrissur district of the state, saying that he carried out the multiple blasts.
Before he surrendered, he posted a video on social media stating his reasons for carrying out the blasts.
By Sunday evening, a 21-member special investigation team (SIT) of the Kerala Police, headed by ADGP Ajith Kumar, was set up to probe the case.
Initially, one woman had died and 60 were injured, six of them critically, in the blasts. Subsequently, one of the six critically wounded -- a 53-year-old woman -- succumbed to her injuries. By Monday morning, the death toll rose to three with the death of a 12-year-old girl who had suffered 95 per cent burns in the incident.
Presently, 21 people are under treatment for injuries suffered in the blasts and of them 16 are in the ICU, a state Health Department bulletin said.
Of the 16, three are in severely critical condition, it said.&nbsp;

A case has been registered against Union Minister of State Rajeev Chandrasekhar for allegedly making statements that promote enmity between different groups, police said on Tuesday.
The Kerala police registered the FIR on its own in connection with the minister's recent statements on social media regarding the Kochi blasts and a Hamas leader's virtual address at an event organised by an Islamist group in the Malappuram district of the state recently.
A senior officer of Kochi city police said that an FIR under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence) of the IPC and section 120 (o) (causing nuisance and violation of public order) of the Kerala Police Act has been registered against the minister.
After reports of the bomb blasts at a religious gathering of Jehovah's Witnesses in Kalamassery near came out on Sunday, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Chandrasekhar put up posts on social media platform X criticising Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan.

Following this, a verbal duel took place on Monday between the CM and Chandrasekhar with the BJP leader calling Vijayan a "liar" and he in turn lashing out and terming the MoS "extremely venomous".
The CM also said that if anyone makes statements which are in violation of the law, irrespective of whether they are central or state ministers, cases would be registered against them.

The death toll from the blasts at a Christian religious gathering near Kochi has risen to three, according to an official statement.
A 12-year-old girl, identified as Libina from Malayattoor in Ernakulam district, succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of Monday at the Kalamassery Government Medical College Hospital.
In the statement issued by the hospital's medical board, the girl was admitted to the hospital on Sunday morning with severe burns covering 95 per cent of her body.
Despite receiving ventilator support, her condition continued to deteriorate, leading to her death at 12.40 am, it said.
This marks the third casualty from the blasts at the convention centre.
Two women who were part of the gathering had lost their lives on Sunday.
Over 50 individuals were injured, some seriously, during the multiple blasts at the international convention centre in Kalamassery where the followers from the minority Christian group, Jehovah's Witnesses, had gathered for the final day of a three-day-long prayer meeting.

The explosions took place when thousands of members of the Christian denomination Jehovah&rsquo;s Witnesses had gathered for a prayer meeting.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The death toll in the blasts at a religious gathering in Kalamassery near here increased to two with a woman, who suffered 90 per cent burns in the incident, succumbing to her injuries, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said on Sunday.
Fifty-three-year-old Kumari, a native of Thodupuzha in Idukki district of the state, succumbed to the grievous burns suffered in the incident, the minister said.
One person died on the spot in the incident, which occurred in the morning, and 52 others were injured initially Of the 52, 18 were in ICUs and of them six were in critical condition, George said in the evening.
Of the six, three -- including a 12-year-old child and Kumari -- were suffering from over 90 per cent burns, she said.

A man claiming to be a member of Jehovah's Witnesses put up a video message on a social media platform claiming responsibility for the multiple blasts at a Christian religious gathering at Kalamassery here on Sunday morning.
Identifying himself as Martin in the video, which was aired on various TV channels, the man alleged that he took the decision as the teachings of Jehovah Witnesses were 'seditious'. Martin said that everyone must have come to know about the bomb explosions and the serious consequences that followed.
Martin said he had been part of the Jehovah's Witnesses Christian religious group for 16 years and around six years ago, he realised they were not a good organisation. He claimed that he had told the organisation several times to correct its teachings, but it was not ready to do so.
"As I had no other option, I took this decision," the man contended.
He further alleged that the organisation and its ideology were dangerous for the country and therefore, it had to be put to an end in the state.
The man said that if no one reacts, then the organisation will continue with the belief that their ideology and teachings are correct.
"But their ideology is wrong. Jehovah's Witnesses, your ideology is wrong. You do not help anyone or respect anyone. You want everyone to be destroyed, except yourself. That is your ideology," he alleged.
"I am going to surrender before the police and there is no need to come in search of me," he said, concluding his video message.
One woman died and over 45 people were injured, some seriously, in the blasts, ADGP Law and Order M R Ajith Kumar told reporters here in the evening.
The officer also said that a man -- identified as Dominic Martin -- surrendered at Kodakara police station in Thrissur district of the state in the morning, claiming he was the one who set off the blasts.
Earlier, State Police Chief Shaik Darvesh Saheb told media in Thiruvananthapuram that according to the preliminary probe the blasts occurred due to IED.
"We are examining it," he said.

Considering an application by the Kerala government seeking the stay, the court adjourned the case for detailed hearing.
Directing the government to produce the documents before September 9, the bench said a detailed hearing in the matter will be held on September 15.
In its application, the state government said unless the stay is granted, it will be put to irreparable injury and hardship.
The state government filed the application in the court, after an all-party-meeting in the state demanded withdrawal of the Union Cabinet's decision last week to lease out the airport to Adani Enterprises.
Last year, the high court had dismissed the petition challenging the decision, terming it as not maintainable under Article 226 of the Constitution.
The state government then filed an appeal before the Supreme Court against the high court order.
The apex court set aside the judgement of the high court and the matter was remanded back to it for a decision on merit.
Referring to the top court directive, the state government said, "all further proceedings in relation to grant of lease with regard to operation, management and development of Thiruvananthapuram international airport to Adani Enterprises Ltd, is to be stayed pending disposal of the aforementioned writ petition."&nbsp;

Swapna, who is a former employee of the UAE consulate in the state capital, is among the four accused booked by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the smuggling of 30 kg of gold through diplomatic baggage which arrived at the Thiruvanathapuram International airport on July 5.
The gold valued at around Rs 15 crore was seized by the Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate, Kochi.
