National Green Tribunal has imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore on the Kochi Municipal Corporation for their 'utter failure' to manage waste effectively at the Brahmapuram waste dumping yard, which led to a major fire outbreak on March 2.
Coming down heavily on Kerala authorities, the Bench blamed the State for the environmental emergency caused due to fire and directed the civic body to deposit the money with the Chief Secretary within a month for necessary remediation measures.
The NGT was hearing a matter in which it had initiated suo-motu (on its own) proceedings on the basis of a media report.&nbsp;

These visuals are from the week-long fire at Kochi's Brahmapuram waste plant which broke out on March 2, 2023.
Though the massive blaze was brought under control on March 5 by joint efforts of Kerala Fire Force, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force-- the town remained engulfed in toxic smoke leading to a poor air quality index, which remained over 300, eventually causing an increase in the incidents of breathlessness and discomfort among the citizens.
But how did the situation reach a point where it posed serious health hazards for the people of Kochi?
Around 15 years ago--in 2008, a waste management plant was inaugurated on a 15-acre area in Brahmapuram with a capacity of 250 tonnes per day.&nbsp;
Eventually, the Kochi corporation went on to acquire more land over the years for the Brahmapuram plant which now stands at a mammoth 110 acres of land near the city's major IT parks.
On average, 390 tonnes of waste is dumped every day out of which 64 percent is biodegradable while 36 per cent is plastic and other non-biodegradable waste, as per a report by India Today.
The main source of toxic air emanating from the Brahmapuram plant is said to be the plastic waste dumped at the site.

As per the town's mayor, the plant has been witnessing periodic fires since 2012 but the latest blaze forced the Kerala govt to prohibit the dumping of plastic at the site.
The Pollution Control Board also imposed a fine of ₹14.92 crore on the Kochi Corporation for non-compliance with waste disposal regulations.

Ernakulam district officials said that there was no smoke emanating from the site by the evening of March 13 but residents have been asked to be careful due to the high level of pollution in the air due to the fire.&nbsp;

Full emergency declared at Kochi airport over suspected hydraulic failure in flight from Sharjah

According to CIAL officials, there were no diversion or runway blockages and the emergency was withdrawn at 8.36 pm.

A full emergency was declared at the Kochi airport after a flight was suspected to have suffered a hydraulic failure en route from Sharjah to Kochi, informed Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL).
"Suspected hydraulic failure at IX 412 from Sharjah to Kochi. Due to this, a full emergency was declared at 08.04 pm in the Kochi airport. The aircraft landed safely at 08.26 pm," informed CIAL in a statement.
According to CIAL officials, there were no diversion or runway blockages and the emergency was withdrawn at 8.36 pm.

Airport operations were declared normal post the withdrawal of the emergency. Earlier on Sunday, an Air Asia flight makes an emergency landing at Lucknow airport soon after take-off for Kolkata.
"Air Asia flight return back to the Lucknow airport after aircraft suffered bird hit, aircraft was landed safely and all passengers are also safe," an airport official told ANI. "An Airbus aircraft of Air Aisa with around 170 passengers was deployed for the Kolkata operation, all of whom are safe," Air Asia said in a statement

According to reports, the salary purse of the franchises will be Rs 95 crore this time around, an increase of Rs 5 crore from last year. This means each franchise will have reserves of at least Rs 5 crore to start with. The purse could swell if the IPL teams release players ahead of the auction.
IPL 2023 is likely to kick-start in the 4th week of March next year.

 A 63-year-old man and his wife were not allowed to board their flight at the Cochin International Airport in the early hours of Saturday after he uttered the word "bomb" when asked what was in their luggage, police said here.
They said the couple, who were going abroad, reached the airport around 1.30 am.
As the staff at the check-in counter asked them what was in their luggage, the irked husband said "bomb", triggering a panic, following which airport security was informed.
They were handed over to the Nedumbassery police.
The man was arrested and later released on station bail, the police said.
