An 18-year-old rickshaw driver from a village in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh is overjoyed on meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace after she collected a prestigious women&rsquo;s empowerment award in London this week.
Arti received the Amal Clooney Women&rsquo;s Empowerment Award, named after the world-renowned human rights barrister, at the Prince&rsquo;s Trust Awards in London followed by a meeting with the 75-year-old monarch on Wednesday.
She was honoured for inspiring other young girls through her work with the government's Pink E-rickshaw initiative, which provides safe transport for other women with a mission to drive change, quite literally.
&ldquo;I take pride in being able to inspire other girls who face similar challenges. This newfound independence has allowed me to see the world in a different light. Now, I am able to fulfil not only my dreams but also those of my daughter," said Arti, who has a five-year-old daughter for whom she has bought some cake and a pair of shoes on her very first visit to London.
&ldquo;It has been an unbelievably amazing experience, meeting the King who was so nice and sent his namaste to my family back home too. He also listened carefully as I spoke about how much I love driving my e-rickshaw, which does not run on polluting diesel or petrol but one that I charge at home every night,&rdquo; she shared, speaking in Hindi.
Founded by King Charles when he was the Prince of Wales, the Prince&rsquo;s Trust International will now transform into the King&rsquo;s Trust International as it continues its work supporting young people across 20 countries through employment, education and enterprise programmes. The Prince&rsquo;s Trust women&rsquo;s empowerment award recognises the global work of young women who have succeeded against the odds and made a lasting difference to those around them.
&ldquo;This year&rsquo;s winner, Arti, is an inspirational example of someone whose trailblazing work in a typically male arena makes women in her community safer. Arti is determined to create a world where her daughter will not face the obstacles that she has faced, and she is already making a difference through her example,&rdquo; said Amal Clooney, the British activist-barrister after whom the award is named.
For the reception at Buckingham Palace, Arti arrived in a pink rickshaw &ndash; showcasing it not only as a sustainable mode of transport but also an idea and a movement.
In July 2023, Project Lehar, delivered in partnership with Prince&rsquo;s Trust International and the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), introduced Arti to the Indian government&rsquo;s Pink E-Rickshaw scheme, an initiative aimed at empowering women and expanding their income earning opportunities across the country. Under the innovative scheme, pink e-rickshaws were provided by the Bahraich district administration with a subsidy for women drivers.
The scheme aims to increase employment opportunities for vulnerable women, especially widows and single mothers like Arti, while also improving women&rsquo;s access to safe transport, thereby increasing their mobility and independence.
&ldquo;Arti truly embodies the courage, perseverance and determination to succeed against all odds, emerging as a role model for women in her village. We are immensely grateful for our partnership with the Prince&rsquo;s Trust International that has enabled us to support young women to realise their dreams and aspirations. The King will be postponing his public duties on medical advice but will continue with his duties as a Head of State such as essential paperwork and private meetings.

Britain&rsquo;s King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer following his recent hospital procedure for a benign prostate enlargement, Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Monday.
While the palace has not specified the form of cancer, it said the 75-year-old monarch has started treatment and remains &ldquo;wholly positive&rdquo;.
Meanwhile, he will be postponing his public duties on medical advice but will continue with his duties as a Head of State such as essential paperwork and private meetings.
&ldquo;During The King&rsquo;s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,&rdquo; reads the Buckingham Palace statement.
&ldquo;His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,&rdquo; it said.
The statement noted that the King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure.
&ldquo;He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible. His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer,&rdquo; it added.
Over the weekend, King Charles was photographed waving after he and Queen Camilla attended a church service in Sandringham, Norfolk, marking his first public appearance since being discharged from the London Clinic last Monday.
He has since travelled from Sandringham to London to begin treatment as an outpatient and is now at his palace in London.
&ldquo;Wishing His Majesty a full and speedy recovery. I have no doubt he'll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well," British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on X.
The King is said to have informed both his sons, William and Harry, personally about his diagnosis and Prince William is in regular contact with his father.
Meanwhile, sources said that Prince Harry, who lives in the US, has spoken to his father and plans to travel to the UK to see him in the coming days.

The King was presented with the Holy Bible by the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. The new Bible was commissioned for the Service by Lambeth Palace. After the oath, he signed copies presented by the Lord Chamberlain, as the choir sang an anthem by William Byrd. Having taken The Oath, the King knelt before the High Altar and prayed aloud.
The words of his prayer have been inspired by the hymn, &lsquo;I vow to thee, my country&rsquo;, in a continuation of the theme of service.&nbsp;

Queen Camilla wore Queen Mary's crown, which was designed for the coronation of June 1911 when it contained three large diamonds, including the controversial Kohinoor which was later replaced by crystal replicas. The modern version designed for 75-year-old Camilla is minus the Kohinoor and made of a silver frame, lined with gold, and set with 2,200 diamonds, mainly brilliant-cut with some rose-cut.
While she was &ldquo;anointed&rdquo; with holy oil in full public view, Charles was anointed behind a cloth screen depicting a central design of a tree with branches filled with 56 leaves representing the Commonwealth of nations &ndash; including one of the leaves dedicated to India. The holy Chrism oil consecrated at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem was symbolically touched to the monarch&rsquo;s head, chest and hands as part of the religious ceremony.

The "anointing screen" was unveiled this weekend to show a central design of a tree with branches filled with 56 leaves representing the Commonwealth nations, which the palace said is reflective of the 74-year-old monarch&rsquo;s "deep affection" for the organisation.
The anointing, historically regarded as a moment between the Sovereign and God with a screen or canopy in place given its sanctity, takes place before the crowning of a British monarch.
&ldquo;Each and every element of the design has been specifically chosen to symbolise aspects of this historic Coronation and the Commonwealth, from the birds that symbolise the joy and interaction among members of a community living in harmony, to the rejoicing angels and the dove that represents the Holy Spirit,&rdquo; said Aidan Hart, the Designer and Iconographer behind the project.
During the anointing ceremony, the Dean of Westminster pours holy oil from the Ampulla into the Coronation Spoon, and the Archbishop of Canterbury anoints the Sovereign on the hands, chest and head. Ahead of the big day next Saturday, the screen was blessed at a special service of dedication at the Chapel Royal at St. James&rsquo;s Palace in London.
The individual leaves were embroidered by staff and students from the Royal School of Needlework, as well as members of the Worshipful Company of Broderers, Drapers and Weavers.
&ldquo;It has been a wonderful collaborative project to be involved with, and an exciting celebration of craft techniques. The leaves were a particular pleasure as they were worked on by multiple embroiderers,&rdquo; said Anne Butcher, Head of Studio and Standards at the Royal School of Needlework.
The materials used to create the screen have also been &ldquo;sourced sustainably&rdquo; from across the UK and other Commonwealth nations, with the cloth made of wool from Australia and New Zealand and woven and finished in UK mills. The script used for the names of each Commonwealth country has been designed as modern and classical, inspired by both the Roman Trojan column letters and the work of Welsh calligrapher David Jones.
The palace revealed that the screen combines traditional and contemporary sustainable embroidery practices and has been gifted for the occasion by the City of London Corporation and City Livery Companies.
&ldquo;While many things have changed since the last Coronation, one thing that remains the same is the City&rsquo;s unstinting loyalty to and support for the Monarchy,&rdquo; said Nicholas Lyons, the Lord Mayor of the City of London.
The screen is supported by a wooden pole framework, designed and created by Nick Gutfreund of the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, and the oak wooden poles are made from a windblown tree from the Windsor Estate, which was originally planted by the Duke of Northumberland in 1765.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m so pleased we were able to use sustainable materials at the heart of the screen, including using a windblown tree from the Windsor Estate for the wooden frame,&rdquo; said Project Lead Nick Gutfreund.
Also forming part of the Commonwealth tree are the King&rsquo;s Cypher, decorative roses, angels and a scroll. The screen is three-sided, with the open side to face the High Altar in Westminster Abbey. The two sides of the screen feature a much simpler design than the front, with maroon fabric and a gold, blue and red cross.

1950, a group of students from Glasgow stole the stone from Westminster and took it back to Scotland. It was returned to England in 1951. Two years later, the stone was part of the coronation of late Queen Elizabath II.&nbsp;

They have been fashioned into a tiny cross and incorporated into the overall design, visible behind a rose crystal gemstone.
The Archbishop of Wales, Andrew John, blessed the new Cross of Wales before dignitaries and parishioners at a service in Llandudno, north Wales.
It will now be taken to London and be carried at the head of the coronation procession.
The archbishop said the cross "speaks to our Christian faith, our heritage, our resources and our commitment to sustainability".
"We are delighted too that its first use will be to guide Their Majesties (Charles and Camilla) into Westminster Abbey at the coronation service."
Charles presented the Cross of Wales to the Anglican Church in Wales to mark its centenary.
It took designer Michael Lloyd two years to make and was crafted from recycled silver bullion, with fragments of Welsh timber and slate.
After the coronation, it will be shared by the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches in Wales.

It marks the first royal endorsement of its kind as it emerged that independent research is underway to explore the historic links between royalty and slave trading.
"This is an issue that His Majesty takes profoundly seriously," notes the Buckingham Palace statement.
"As His Majesty told the Commonwealth Heads of Government Reception in Rwanda last year: 'I cannot describe the depths of my personal sorrow at the suffering of so many, as I continue to deepen my own understanding of slavery's enduring impact'. That process has continued with vigour and determination since His Majesty's Accession," it said.
It comes after "The Guardian" published a previously unseen document showing links between a slave trading company and a 17th century ancestor of King Charles.

The document shows that the deputy governor of the slave-trading Royal African Company transferred 1,000 pounds of shares in the business to King William III in 1689.
The palace added: &ldquo;Historic Royal Palaces is a partner in an independent research project, which began in October last year, that is exploring, among other issues, the links between the British monarchy and the transatlantic slave trade during the late 17th and 18th centuries.
&ldquo;As part of that drive, the Royal Household is supporting this research through access to the Royal Collection and the Royal Archives. Given the complexities of the issues it is important to explore them as thoroughly as possible," it added.
It is expected that the research, also involving Manchester University, would be concluded by September 2026.&nbsp;

Abbey officials said Friday that the section of the church's floor known as the Cosmati pavement, where the coronation chair has been placed for some 700 years, will be on display during Charles' crowning ceremony after being hidden away under carpets for decades because of disrepair.
The pavement area, normally roped off to the public, will be open to small guided &ldquo;barefoot tours&rdquo; after the May 6 coronation. Visitors will be asked to remove their shoes to avoid wear and tear to the now-conserved floor.
&ldquo;Standing on the pavement and feeling that sense of awe of being in the central part of the abbey is a really amazing experience," said Scott Craddock, head of visitor experience at the abbey. &ldquo;It will give people the opportunity to feel what it's like being at that center stage of the coronation.&rdquo; The intricate mosaic of marble, stone, glass and metal, located in front of the abbey's high altar, was commissioned by Henry III in the 1200s and made by Italian craftsmen and English masons.
It is where English &mdash; and, later, British &mdash; coronations have taken place ever since, but the area was covered by carpet at many previous coronations, including those of Elizabeth II in 1953 and her father, George VI, in 1937.
It is said to be the best surviving example outside Italy of a rare type of mosaic stonework known as &ldquo;Cosmati,&rdquo; after the Italian family which created it. The mosaic was restored to its former glory after a two-year conservation project was completed in 2010.
&ldquo;It's a unique piece of art to Westminster Abbey but also to Britain itself &mdash; there are no other mosaic pavements like this in the U.K.,&rdquo; said Vanessa Simeoni, the abbey's head conservator.
Experts from the abbey will guide the tours, which will run on some days from May 15 to July 29.&nbsp;
