During a crucial meeting of the INDIA bloc in Delhi, West Bengal chief minister reportedly proposed the name of Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge as the opposition amalgam's Prime Ministerial face.&nbsp;
NDTV reported quoting sources that the Congress chief politiely declined the offer. Kharge said the opposition will first unite to bring majority, even as he neither confirmed nor denied about the proposal.
On December 17, the Trinamool Congress chief had told the media that INDIA bloc will decide on the Prime Minister face after the 2024 election results. &nbsp;
A crucial meeting of the opposition INDIA bloc began in the national capital on Tuesday where top leaders were discussing the way forward, including seat-sharing, for taking on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The issue of suspension of 141 opposition MPs in both Houses of Parliament came up at the meeting with leaders cutting across party lines condemning the action against the members.
"The leaders asserted that they will continue to fight against the tyranny of this government," a source said.
Harping on putting up a united front, the Congress alleged that democracy is being "mercilessly murdered" and MPs who raise people's issues are suspended from the House.
"In such an adverse situation, our unity is our strength," the party posted on X after the meeting began.
The opposition leaders deliberated on a blueprint for a joint campaign, seat-sharing arrangement and redrawing their strategy after the Congress suffered a setback in the recent assembly polls, where BJP won in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Evolving a "core positive agenda" will also be among the main challenges before the INDIA bloc.
Sharing a video on X, the Congress said senior leaders including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and former party chief Rahul Gandhi were present at the meeting of INDIA alliance in Delhi.
"Today democracy is being mercilessly murdered by the Modi government. Representatives who raise public voice are suspended from the House. In such an adverse situation, our unity is our strength and this resolve to protect democracy is our energy," the party said in a post on X.

The Congress president said the prime minister can give an interview to a newspaper and the home minister to TV channels "but they have zero accountability left to the Parliament - which represents the People of India".

The Congress Monday reacted strongly to the suspension of Opposition MPs in Parliament, claiming the government has reached an extreme level of dictatorship and was crushing dissent as it wants to "bulldoze" important legislations without any debate.
Soon after the suspension of 33 opposition MPs, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said all democratic norms have been thrown into the dustbin by this "autocratic" government and it has shown zero accountability towards Parliament.
"First, intruders attacked Parliament. Then Modi government attacking Parliament and Democracy. All Democratic norms are being thrown into the dustbin by an autocratic Modi Government by suspending 47 MPs," he said in a post on X.
Thirteen members were already suspended.
"We have two simple and genuine demands - The Union Home Minister should make a statement in both Houses of Parliament on the inexcusable breach in the Parliament security and a detailed discussion should be held on the same," Kharge said.
"With an Opposition-Less Parliament, the Modi Governmentt can now bulldoze important pending legislations, crush any dissent, without any debate," Kharge, who is also the leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, said.&nbsp;

Addressing a Congress rally in Jaipur in poll-bound, Kharge said President Droupadi Murmu was not invited for the inauguration of the new Parliament building while many others, including actors, were invited.
"This is an insult to the president," he said.
The Congress leader also questioned the Narendra Modi government's intention behind bringing the women's reservation bill, saying the BJP does not want to give reservation to women.
He said the BJP thought of the women's reservation bill just ahead of elections as several opposition parties have formed the INDIA bloc.
"When Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and I together came up with the idea of INDIA, the women's bill came to their mind," he said.
Kharge also alleged Prime Minister Modi pitches four candidates against the Congress - one each of BJP, Enforcement Directorate (ED), Income Tax Department and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

BJP leader Baburao Chinchansur, believed to be one of those who played a key role in defeating AICC president M Mallikarjun Kharge, in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, appears set to join the Congress in Karnataka.
Chinchansur, a prominent leader of the Koli-Kabbaliga community in the Kalyana Karnataka region, resigned from his post of Member of the Legislative Council on Monday.
He had represented Gurmitkal assembly constituency in Kalaburagi district from 2008 to 2018, and was a Minister in the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government earlier. However, he quit the Congress in 2018 after his defeat in the assembly election and joined the BJP.

As a BJP member, he is viewed as one of the main leaders who played a key role in defeating Kharge in Gulbarga (Kalaburagi) Lok Sabha constituency. BJP candidate Umesh Jadhav, who too had resigned from the Congress and joined the BJP, won that election.
Congress sources said Chinchansur is expected to join the party in the coming days.
Earlier this month, another BJP MLC Puttanna resigned from the Legislative Council and joined the Congress.
When reporters sought a reaction from Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, he said Chinchansur had come from the Congress and was going back to the same party. He added that the BJP was strong in Gurmitkal and Chinchansur quitting the party would not have any effect on the party&rsquo;s prospects there.
Assembly elections in Karnataka are due by May.
BJP stalwart and former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa refused to discuss the issue of Chinchansur's switching of loyalties, as he had already quit.
