Known to have been donned by both Nehru and Gandhi, Khadi&nbsp;is part&nbsp;of a strong textile history of India. And at present, it is the most sought after and celebrated fabric in the fashion industry.&nbsp;&nbsp;
<h2>What is Khadi?</h2>
Khadi&nbsp;is a coarse&nbsp;handspun&nbsp;and hand-woven fabric made from natural fibres.&nbsp;Derived from the word Khaddar, the making of Khadi involves converting fibre into yarn using spinning wheels. Made from cotton, silk and wool it can keep you warm in winters and cool in summers.&nbsp;
<h2>Evolution of Khadi</h2>
Khadi's evolution dates back to India's freedom struggle when Mahatma Gandhi revived the fabric and turned it into a powerful political tool against the British Raj. Gandhi with his chakra encouraged the use of the fabric "Made in India," as an effort to improve the socio-economic conditions and make way for self-sustenance.&nbsp;A symbol of the Swadeshi movement, self-reliance and self-respect, the revival of Khadi&nbsp;helped pave India's path to liberation.&nbsp;

Addressing the nation, in the 70th edition of his Mann ki Baat programme on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes to citizens on the occasion of Dussehra. Amid pandemic with mute celebrations this festive season, PM Modi urged for restraint to contain the spread of novel coronavirus. The Prime Minister paid respect to soldiers patrolling borders and said that our jawans are serving the nation even when the people in the country are celebrating festivals, so every citizen should light a Diya for them. He further urged people to buy local indigenous products this festive season and talked about how Khadi is now becoming a world-class brand for organic clothing. He also talked about strengthening&nbsp;India's national integrity and asked people to visit a government-run website on the initiative- ekbharat.gov.in. The PM called for donations for this initiative and stated it our duty to ensure unity and integration.

In a first, Khadi and Village Industries Commission&nbsp;launched Khadi fabric footwear for men and women.
Union MSME Minister Nitin Gadkari spoke at the launch of the event virtually and added that each pair of shoes and sandals is priced between Rs 1100 and Rs 3300.
Available on the KVIC portal, initially only 15 designs for women and 10 designs for male footwear have been launched.
As per reports, the footwear will have paintings from across India on them like the Madhubani, promoting art forms in the country. The move, it is believed, will help generate employment.
