The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it will “take a call” on listing a plea to allow girls to sit for exams in Karnataka government schools while wearing the hijab.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it will &ldquo;take a call&rdquo; on listing a plea to allow girls to sit for exams in Karnataka government schools while wearing the hijab.
Following the apex court's split verdict on the issue of the ban on wearing the headscarf, girls in hijab are not being permitted to take the exams scheduled to begin from March 9, a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud was told. &nbsp; &ldquo;They are wearing headscarf. If they are wearing headscarf they are not allowed inside the examination hall. Only on that limited aspect, the court may consider listing it on Monday or Friday,&rdquo; said lawyer Shadan Farasat.
He told the bench, also comprising Justice P S Narasimha, that a few girls have moved to private institutions because of the prohibition on wearing hijabs but have to take their exams in government institutions. They risk losing another year if not permitted, he said.
&ldquo;I will take a call,&rdquo; the CJI said.
Due to the split verdict, the high court's judgement still holds the field.
The split verdict on October 13 last year held off a permanent resolution to the hijab row as both judges suggested placing the matter before a larger bench for adjudication.
The court had said last month that it would consider setting up a three-judge bench to adjudicate the case related to the ban on wearing of hijabs in Karnataka government schools.&nbsp;

A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud assured that it will list the matter and give a date.

The Supreme Court on Monday assured the petitioners to list the matter pertaining to the ban on Hijab in the educational institutes in Karnataka. Senior Advocate Meenakshi Arora mentioned the matter related to the headscarves before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
Arora said that many girls have lost out on the entire year because they have refused to take off their hijab. She also apprised the court about practicals in educational institutes in February and sought an early hearing for interim directions.
A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud assured that it will list the matter and give a date. The court also observed that the matter would be heard by a three-judge bench of the top court.
The court asked the lawyer to mention the matter before the registrar. The top court had earlier given a verdict on various petitions challenging the Karnataka High Court order which upheld the ban on Hijab in educational institutes.

Two girls in Karnataka's Udupi&nbsp;were not allowed to write their class 12 exams on Friday because they showed up at the examination hall wearing burqas.&nbsp;
The two girls, who were also among the petitioners who had moved court asking that hijabs&nbsp;be allowed inside classrooms,&nbsp;tried to convince the&nbsp;invigilators and the college principal of&nbsp;Vidyodaya PU College in Udupi&nbsp;for close to 45 minutes, according to a NDTV&nbsp;report but left the premises without taking the exam as the authorities refused to budge.&nbsp;
The incident follows a nation-wide controversy over wearing of hijabs&nbsp;by Muslim girls inside classrooms.&nbsp;
It started after several colleges in Karnataka's&nbsp;Udupi&nbsp;and elsewhere refused to allow girls into classrooms if they were wearing a hijab,&nbsp;citing a law that the head covering was allowed inside schools but not inside classrooms for the sake of uniformity.&nbsp;
The matter then reached the Karnataka&nbsp;High Court which ruled that wearing of hijab&nbsp;was not an essential religious practice in Islam and said that students had to follow the law laid out by the state government.&nbsp;

The prescription of school uniform is only a reasonable restriction, constitutionally permissible which the students cannot object to, a three-judge bench of the court further noted.
"We are of the considered opinion that wearing of Hijab by Muslim women does not form a part of essential religious practice in Islamic faith," Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi who headed the full bench of the High Court said reading out portion of the order.
The other two judges in the panel were Justice Krishna S Dixit and Justice J M Khazi.
The bench also maintained that the government has power to issue impugned government order dated February 5, 2022 and no case is made out for its invalidation. By the said order, the state government had banned wearing clothes which disturb equality, integrity and public order in schools and colleges.
The court also rejected the plea to initiate a disciplinary inquiry against the college, its principal and a teacher.
"In the above circumstances, all these writ petitions being devoid of merits are liable to be and accordingly are dismissed. In view of the dismissal of the writ petition, all the pending applications fell into insignificance and are accordingly disposed off," the bench said in its order.
On January 1, six girl students of a college in Udupi attended a press conference held by Campus Front of India (CFI) in the coastal town protesting against the college authorities denying them entry into the classroom wearing Hijab.
This was four days after they requested the principal permission to wear Hijabs in classrooms which was not allowed. Till then, students used to wear Hijab to the campus and entered the classroom after removing the scarves, the college principal Rudre Gowda had said.
