Karnataka voted to elect legislative assembly on May 10 and the results will be declared on May 13.

Congress state president D K Shivakumar on Friday junked the exit poll results in which the party, though it gains the highest number of seats, has to contend with a hung Assembly. He insisted that the party will win at least 141 seats and form a majority government.
There was a wave in favour of the Congress, Shivakumar said, a day ahead of Saturday's counting of votes of the Assembly election.
He also ruled out the possibility of return of 'resort politics' saying that "era ended 25 years ago".
"I don&rsquo;t trust exit polls. I have trust in 141 seats. Our sample size is much bigger. Exit poll sample size is small. There is a major wave in favour of the Congress," Shivakumar told reporters here.
Stating that the exit poll results fluctuate by 20 seats, the Congress state chief said the number he has given will only increase and not decrease.
"I am not disputing the exit polls showing results in our favour. I thank them but we will get a clear majority. This is my firm belief," he insisted.
Explaining the reason behind his confidence of getting 141 seats, Shivakumar said he has been on the ground and has done his homework well.
According to Shivakumar, who is a Congress candidate from Kanakapura constituency, the verdict will be in favour of the Congress despite the money spent by the BJP and their big leaders campaigning in the election.
"Whatever money the BJP people have splurged, whichever big leaders may have campaigned and toiled here, yet the ballot is stronger than the bullet," Shivakumar said.
He also ruled out the possibility of a hung assembly and said the voters did not get scared of money and the misuse of the 'double-engine BJP government'.
"I am confident that by 1 pm tomorrow, the verdict will be out. There will be no hung assembly,&rdquo; he added.
Regarding JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy&rsquo;s statement that he was ready for a coalition government, Shivakumar said he does not know what Kumaraswamy said.
"HDK was saying his party will get absolute majority. He said this to instill confidence among his party workers. It is his calculation," the Congress state president said.
He also appealed to JD(S) workers not to "waste their career" and instead to join the Congress.
"I am not the one to get retired. So long as I am alive and healthy, I will continue to fight and will be with the people," he said.
When asked whether he has learnt about any effort to contact winnable candidates, Shivakumar said it is natural because everyone wants to be in the ruling party.
Regarding the possibility of 'resort politics' in the event of a hung Assembly, he claimed that "resort politics ended 25 years ago itself, where all the political parties used to bring people together and displayed their unity".
He was referring to events after elections in the past wherein MLAs were corralled into resorts to prevent horse trading by rival political parties.
"The BJP people have said that whatever number (of seats) they get, they will form the government. Now it seems to be their illusion," he said.
Shivakumar dismissed speculations about distribution of power even before the election results are announced. "Our line is the same as what our party national president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi say." Regarding BJP Minister R Ashoka&rsquo;s statement that in the event of a hung Assembly, the BJP "will retain the cup (form the government)", Shivakumar said, "Let him keep the cup." Congress general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala also expressed optimism about the party's prospects.
"As far as predictions are concerned, I would like to say that we are deeply humbled and with a sense of humility while thanking the people of Karnataka for reposing faith in us. Let us wait till tomorrow. The results will be out. It will be clear. Then we will make a detailed comment," Surjewala said.
To a question on the BJP leaders saying their party will get a majority and is working on a backup plan with the JD(S), the Congress leader said, "At least one thing is clear; the BJP has admitted defeat. Once they have admitted defeat, I think your predictions are correct."

Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday filed nomination from Varuna constituency in this district, for the May 10 Karnataka Assembly polls.
The Leader of Opposition in the Assembly was accompanied by former Minister H C Mahadevappa and Congress leaders.
Siddaramaiah's son Dr Yathindra Siddaramaiah is the sitting Congress MLA from Varuna.
The 75-year-old, eight-time MLA, had earlier won twice from Varuna, and went on to become the Leader of Opposition after winning from here in 2008, and then became Chief Minister after 2013 Assembly polls.
The Congress legislature party leader offered prayers to his family deity Siddarameshwara at the temple in his native village of Siddaramanahundi, and also visited Sri Rama temple there, and held a massive roadshow before filing the nomination.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar has expressed his displeasure after he was asked by the BJP not to contest the May 10 Assembly elections. 

Shetter noted that he got elected to the Assembly six times and every time had won the seat with a margin of 25,000 votes or more.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Tuesday said he has been asked by the BJP central leadership not to contest the May 10 Assembly elections, to which he has informed the party top brass of his displeasure with the decision.
Shettar, a sitting MLA from Hubli-Dharwad Central, said he has told the leadership that he would contest the election again, and requested them to give him an opportunity. He told them that their decision was not acceptable to him and urged the party top brass for its reconsideration.
"I received a message from the seniors in the party that I am senior and a former chief minister. So, make way for others," the 67-year-old BJP leader told reporters.
Shettar, a former BJP state unit president and Assembly Speaker, said he has worked hard for 30 years to build the party in the north Karnataka region.
"If they had told me two to three months ago, then it would have been respectable for me. When the nomination is just two days away (to begin), I am definitely hurt," Shettar, a former Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, said.
"I have told them that I will contest the election. Whatever you have said is not acceptable to me. So, please reconsider your decision and give me an opportunity to contest the election again," he further said.
The former CM noted that he got elected to the Assembly six times and every time had won the seat with a margin of 25,000 votes or more.
"I questioned them why I should not contest the election. What are my minus points? In the survey, which they have done in all the constituencies, according to the information I got, a positive response has come -- almost 70 per cent positive response and public opinion is there (in my favour)," Shettar claimed.
He added that the senior leaders also agreed that there was a positive response in the survey report.
"When there is a positive report, and there is no black spot on me, no corruption charges or allegations against me...," Shettar asserted.
Stating that he had been loyal to the party and worked with dedication, he wondered whether loyalty itself was a minus point for him and there was no respect for it.
"When he (call from central leadership) said so, I was deeply hurt. Jagadish Shettar, who worked for 30 years and built the party, has reached this condition, which was painful," he added.
Disclosing that he was offered some other position and asked to discuss with the central leadership, Shettar said he should have been treated respectfully as he is a senior leader and former Chief Minister of the state.&nbsp;

BJP leader Baburao Chinchansur, believed to be one of those who played a key role in defeating AICC president M Mallikarjun Kharge, in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, appears set to join the Congress in Karnataka.
Chinchansur, a prominent leader of the Koli-Kabbaliga community in the Kalyana Karnataka region, resigned from his post of Member of the Legislative Council on Monday.
He had represented Gurmitkal assembly constituency in Kalaburagi district from 2008 to 2018, and was a Minister in the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government earlier. However, he quit the Congress in 2018 after his defeat in the assembly election and joined the BJP.

As a BJP member, he is viewed as one of the main leaders who played a key role in defeating Kharge in Gulbarga (Kalaburagi) Lok Sabha constituency. BJP candidate Umesh Jadhav, who too had resigned from the Congress and joined the BJP, won that election.
Congress sources said Chinchansur is expected to join the party in the coming days.
Earlier this month, another BJP MLC Puttanna resigned from the Legislative Council and joined the Congress.
When reporters sought a reaction from Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, he said Chinchansur had come from the Congress and was going back to the same party. He added that the BJP was strong in Gurmitkal and Chinchansur quitting the party would not have any effect on the party&rsquo;s prospects there.
Assembly elections in Karnataka are due by May.
BJP stalwart and former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa refused to discuss the issue of Chinchansur's switching of loyalties, as he had already quit.

He added that Congress has a problem whenever BJP speaks about building Ram Mandir.

Addressing a public meeting here, Shah said the Congress always insulted its leaders -- be it S Nijalingappa or former Chief Minister Veerendra Patil.
He claimed that only the BJP knows how to treat party veterans with dignity.
"Prime Minister Modi was in Karnataka recently and the way he felicitated Yediyurappa in front of people is something which all the political parties should learn. They should learn how to respect their elderly, stalwarts and popular leaders," Shah said.
Attacking the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Minister said, "What has happened to the Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi? They are raising slogans, "Modi Teri Kabr Khudegi. The Aam Aadmi Party is also shouting 'Modi Mar Ja' (May Modi die)." Shah said such "sloganeering" will not help because the Prime Minister has the blessings of the people.
"The more you indulge in mudslinging, lotus (BJP's party symbol) will bloom further," he said.
Shah alleged that the Congress and the JD(S) are dynastic parties, and they can never do good to the people of Karnataka.

Speaking to reporters in Udupi, he said he is contesting so that he can work honestly for the cause of Hindutva and against corruption.

The Congress in Karnataka on Monday promised to give Rs 2,000 a month to a housewife in every household if voted to power, said party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in a convention here.
This is the guarantee given by the AICC general secretary to every woman in Karnataka, it was announced in the "Na Nayaki" event organised by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) at Palace Grounds here.
Titled 'Gruha Lakshmi' scheme, it would benefit 1.5-crore housewives, the KPCC said.
