Father-to-be Ranbir Kapoor made his big-screen comeback with Shamshera after a four-year hiatus. The movie's first look and trailer had viewers on the edge of their seats as they eagerly awaited its release. However, the movie failed to enthral the audience, and it failed at the box office. The film received bad reviews from both critics and audiences. 
After a week since the film's release, director Karan Malhotra has finally spoken out about the "critique" the movie has received. He took to Instagram to express his feelings in a post. 
The post read, ‘My Dearest Shamshera, you are majestic the way you are. It is important for me to express myself on this platform because here is where is all the love, the hate, the celebration and the humiliation exists for you. I want to unimaginably apologise to you for abandoning you for these past few days as I could not handle the hate and rage. My withdrawal was my weakness and there are no excuses for it."
He added, "But now I am here, standing beside you hand in hand feeling proud and honoured that you are mine, Will face everything together, the good, the bad and the ugly. And a huge shout out to the Shamshera family, the cast and crew of Shamshera. The love, the blessings and the concern that has been showered upon us are the most precious and nobody can take that away from us.’’ 
He captained the post, ‘Shamshera is mine’.
Shamshera was touted as a larger-than-life film, and it also starred Vaani Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt. It was also Ranbir's first attempt at a period action film, however it did not fare well with the audience.

'Shamshera' is one of Ranbir Kapoor's most anticipated films as it marks his comeback to the big screen after a gap of almost four years. Recently, the makers of the film released a behind-the-scenes video of the period drama in which the actors are seen talking about their action scenes. Ranbir, who portrayed the role of Sanjay Dutt in the latter's biopic, titled 'Sanju,' said that it was 'incredible' working with him.
'It’s amazing that Sanjay Dutt is my antagonist! When I was 10 or 11, I had Sanjay Dutt’s poster in my cupboard. Then eventually getting to play him in a biopic directed by Rajkumar Hirani was a dream come true. And finally getting an opportunity to work with him, to act with him, where I am the protagonist and he is the antagonist, it’s incredible!,' he said.
He added that Sanjay with his brilliant acting, has given us some epic villains. 
'Sanjay Dutt has given us some epic villains with his brilliant acting performances and people are going to love him as Shuddh Singh in Shamshera!,' said Ranbir. 
Director Karan Malhotra, who likes celebrating his hero and villain onscreen, revealed how Sanjay was 'cautious' while dealing with Ranbir in the action scenes. 'He would keep saying, 'beta ye karunga to isko lag na jaaye (He might get hurt if I do this),' Karan disclosed. 
He mentioned that Ranbir too was apprehensive about the same. 'Wo Sanjay Dutt hain yaar, kaise karunga mai (he is Sanjay Dutt, how will I do this?),' Ranbir had told Karan.
The director further said that Ranbir-Sanjay combination will be 'magical onscreen.'
Ranbir plays the protagnist in the film that marks his first-ever dual role as father and son, while Sanjay features as Daroga Shuddh Singh, the antagonist. The film also stars Vaani Kapoor in a pivotal role.
