An explosion at the entrance to a military airfield in the Afghan capital killed and wounded several people on Sunday, an official told AFP.
The cause of the blast at the gate of the facility next to Kabul's international airport was unclear, interior ministry spokesman Abdul Nafy Takor said.

The Taliban authorities claim to have improved security since storming back to power in August 2021 but there have been scores of bomb blasts and attacks, many claimed by the local chapter of the Islamic State group.
Last month at least five Chinese nationals were wounded when gunmen stormed a hotel popular with Chinese business people in Kabul. The attack was claimed by IS.
Hundreds of people, including members of Afghanistan's minority communities, have been killed and wounded in attacks since the Taliban returned to power.

Twenty people were lashed in public on Wednesday in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan as punishment for alleged adultery, theft, and other crimes, a provincial official said.

Mohammad Qasim Riyaz, a Taliban-appointed spokesman for the governor's office in southern Helmand province, said the lashings took place at the sports stadium in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand.
Riyaz said each man was lashed between 35 to 39 times, and the punishments were carried out before provincial Taliban officials, religious clerics, elders and local people.
An unspecified number of those punished also received prison terms according to their crimes, Riyaz said.
Wednesday's lashings in Helmand come a week after the Taliban authorities executed an Afghan convicted of killing another man, the first public execution since the former insurgents returned to power last year.
The execution, carried out with an assault rifle by the victim's father, took place in western Farah province before hundreds of spectators and many top Taliban officials, according to Zabihullah Mujahid, the top government spokesman.
Some officials came from the capital of Kabul.
The execution drew international criticism. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said &ldquo;the death penalty cannot be reconciled with full respect for the right to life,&rdquo; spokeswoman Stephanie Tremblay said.
In comments last week, State Department spokesman Ned Price said the U.S. condemned the public execution.
Price said the Taliban's future relationship with Washington depended &ldquo;largely on their actions when it comes to human rights.&rdquo; No foreign state has officially recognised the Taliban government that took over as U.S. and NATO troops withdrew last year.
The Taliban formerly ruled Afghanistan before the U.S. invasion of 2001.

Unidentified gunmen attacked a hotel popular with Chinese business people in the Afghan capital Monday, with witnesses reporting multiple blasts and several bursts of gunfire.
Smoke could be seen pouring from the multi-storey Kabul Longan Hotel as Taliban security forces rushed to the site and sealed off the neighbourhood.
The Taliban claim to have improved security since storming back to power in August last year but there have been scores of bomb blasts and attacks, many claimed by the local chapter of the Islamic State group.
A Kabul police spokesman told reporters the attack was carried out by "mischievous elements".
"Security forces have reached the area and the clearance of the raiders is underway," he said in a WhatsApp media group.
AFP correspondents near the scene in Shahr-e-naw, a commercial and residential neighbourhood, heard multiple blasts and gunfire, while Afghan media reported similar details.
Video circulating on social media showed people clamouring out of windows on the lower floors of the building, with the hotel sign -- in English and Chinese -- clearly visible.

Other video showed huge flames licking out of another section, with thick plumes of smoke.
A helicopter also made several passes of the area.
The hotel is popular with Chinese business visitors, who have flocked to Afghanistan since the Taliban's return in pursuit of high-risk but potentially lucrative business deals.

23 years ago, the Taliban helped terrorists hijack Indian flight IC-814 to force India to release three sinister terrorists. Now, the Taliban are trying to convince India to come to Afghanistan and complete the projects interrupted by the fall of the civilian government in 2021.
Why is Taliban warming up to India? And should Delhi respond positively? How has India helped Afghanistan in the last 2 decades, and what's been stuck since the Taliban came to power? Let's take a look.
$3 billion - that is the amount of money that India has spent to help Afghanistan so far. Here are a few examples of what Delhi calls its "gifts" to Kabul.
The Afghan Parliament complex was constructed by India for $90 million. It was inaugurated by PM Modi in 2015. India provided Mi-25 and Mi-35 choppers to the Afghan Air Force, as well as 285 military vehicles for the Army. India also helps the Afghan military under a strategic agreement signed in 2011.
In the energy sector, India's biggest assistance has been the 42 MW Salma Dam in Herat province. There is also the transmission line between Pul-e-Khumri and Kabul, and the Chimtala power substation.
To boost connectivity, India helped build the 218-km Zaranj-Delaram highway for $150 million. More than 300 Indians were part of the project and 11 of them died, including in terrorist attacks. Delhi also gave 3 Air India aircraft to Afghanistan's national carrier Ariana.
In healthcare, India recently sent 13 tonnes of medicines, 5 lakh Covid vaccines. In the past, Delhi rebuilt the Indira Gandhi Institute for Child Health, constructed clinics in at least 10 border provinces, and gifted 10 ambulances. India has also provided schoolchildren with high-protein biscuits.
In education, Delhi financed the establishment of an agriculture sciences university, and rebuilt the Habibia High School in capital city Kabul.
The Afghan national cricket team can use an Indian stadium as its home ground. India also helped build a cricket stadium in Kandahar.
For food security, India constructed a cold storage warehouse in Kandahar, and also sent 20,000 metric tonnes of wheat recently. Delhi has also gifted 400 buses and 200 mini-buses for urban areas, and 105 utility vehicles for municipalities. The country helped in rehabilitation of 3 water reservoirs, and digging of tube wells in many places.
India also contributed to the restoration of the Stor Palace in Kabul.
The Taliban has now claimed that an Indian diplomat has expressed interest in resuming the projects which are stuck since Taliban's takeover in August 2021.
Here are a few which might be on the table.
The biggest pending project might be the Shahtoot dam. The agreement for the $250 million project was finalised in November 2020. The dam in Kabul district will help provide safe drinking water to 20 lakh people.
Another project is the Hajigak mine. An Indian consortium won bids for 3 iron ore mines in 2011. AFISCO had said that it would invest $10.8 billion for a steel plant, but updates about the project are not available.
Also, a hundred community development projects worth $80 million were announced by the Indian foreign minister in November 2020. India has also pledged $1 million for an Aga Khan heritage project to restore the Bala Hissar Fort, lying south of Kabul.
So, is the Taliban trying to woo India?
It's possible because the Afghan economy is in tatters, and humanitarian crisis has been unfolding after decades of continuous war. Also, India has been major source of aid to Afghanistan over the last 20 years. Meanwhile, Taliban's main benefactor Pakistan is going through its own economic crisis, while Pakistan's 'iron brother' China exacts a heavy toll for providing any kind of help.
There are multiple reasons why India may respond positively to this development.
The first is security. Indian investment in Afghanistan can prevent the country from becoming a major breeding ground for anti-India terrorists. Showing Taliban the benefits of Indian partnership can make it resistant to plans that Pakistan may be hatching.
The second reason is geopolitics. Pakistan's direct and China's indirect influence on Taliban are not in India's interest. Delhi may like to establish its own relations with Taliban to maintain balance.
Finally, Delhi would want to safeguard the $3 billion worth of assistance that has been given over 2 decades. India would also like to have an opportunity at getting access to Afghanistan's barely-tapped resources.

It raised the death toll from 43 to 53, adding that a further 110 had been wounded.
Afghanistan's Taliban authorities, which have often tried to play down attacks challenging their regime, have said 25 people were killed and 33 others wounded.
No group has so far claimed responsibility, but the jihadist Islamic State group (IS), which considers Shiites as heretics, has carried out several deadly attacks in the same area targeting girls, schools and mosques.

India had withdrawn its officials from the embassy after the Taliban seized power last August following concerns over their security. In June this year, India re-established its diplomatic presence in Kabul by deploying a "technical team" in its embassy in the Afghan capital.
In a statement, Taliban said India's diplomatic presence in Afghanistan would result in the completion of "unfinished projects" that India had initiated and the commencement of new ones.
The statement said Afghanistan "welcomes India's step to upgrade its diplomatic representation in Kabul."
"Besides ensuring security, we will pay close attention to the immunity of the diplomats and cooperate well in endeavours," it said.
"The Afghan government hopes that upgrading diplomatic representation and dispatching diplomats would strengthen Afghan-India relations leading to the completion of unfinished projects by India and the commencement of new vital projects," the Afghan foreign ministry said.
Last month, Taliban supreme leader Hebatullah Akhundzada said no one would be allowed to use Afghan soil to launch attacks on other countries.

The protests come a day after the Taliban said that they are investigating “claims” that al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahri was killed in a U.S. drone strike in the Afghan capital.
However, the group insisted in a statement that it “has no knowledge of the arrival and residence” of al-Zawahri in Afghanistan.
The statement marked the first time the Taliban leadership addressed the U.S. announcement that al-Zawahri was the target of Sunday's strike. However, despite the Taliban denial of knowledge of al-Zawahri's presence, U.S. officials have said the al-Qaida head was staying at a Kabul safe house linked to the deputy leader of the Taliban. The strike killed al-Zawahri when he stepped out onto the safe house's balcony.
His presence in Kabul and the killing have further strained relations between the Taliban and the West, particularly as Afghanistan's rulers seek an urgent infusion of cash to handle the catastrophic collapse of the economy that came after the U.S. withdrawal a year ago.
The Taliban had promised in the Doha Agreement not to harbor al-Qaida members or those seeking to attack the U.S. In the accord, the U.S. committed to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan and not to attack the Taliban.

Thousands gathered in various parts of Kabul carrying anti-America posters and chanted slogans decrying the drone strike.&nbsp;
The protests come a day after the Taliban said that they are investigating &ldquo;claims&rdquo; that al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahri was killed in a U.S. drone strike in the Afghan capital.
However, the group insisted in a statement that it &ldquo;has no knowledge of the arrival and residence&rdquo; of al-Zawahiri in Afghanistan.
The statement marked the first time the Taliban leadership addressed the U.S. announcement that al-Zawahiri was the target of Sunday's strike. However, despite the Taliban denial of knowledge of al-Zawahri's presence, U.S. officials have said the al-Qaeda head was staying at a Kabul safe house linked to the deputy leader of the Taliban. The strike killed al-Zawahiri when he stepped out onto the safe house's balcony.
His presence in Kabul and the killing have further strained relations between the Taliban and the West, particularly as Afghanistan's rulers seek an urgent infusion of cash to handle the catastrophic collapse of the economy that came after the U.S. withdrawal a year ago.
The Taliban had promised in the Doha Agreement not to harbor al-Qaeda members or those seeking to attack the U.S. In the accord, the U.S. committed to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan and not to attack the Taliban.

But how is this possible? How could a missile cause no damage, except kill its target - one person?
The well-known AGM-114 Hellfire missiles are famous for their destructive firepower. They began as anti-tank weapons in the 1980s, but after the 9/11 attacks, Hellfires started being used as drone weapons to kill individuals.
But to kill al-Zawahiri, USA is believed to have used a special variant of the Hellfire - the R9X. The R9X does not contain explosives, but instead houses sharp blades. The R9X is designed to slice and shred its targets.
There are 6 razor-sharp blades fitted inside the missile fuselage. They pop out seconds before the missile makes impact. These sharp blades shred anything in the missile's path. Because of this, the R9X is informally called the 'Flying Ginsu' - a reference to knives sold in the 1970s and 1980s - and also 'Ninja Bomb'.
One of the hardest parts of using the R9X effectively is acquiring exact information about the target's location and the situation around them. But since chances of civilian casualties are reduced, it also provides more opportunities to attack.
The R9X reportedly had another predecessor without explosives. That missile had been designed to hit the target with over 100 pounds of weight thus killing without a blast. It could punch through cars and roofs.
The R9X 'Ninja Bomb' is believed to have felled many high-profile enemies of America. The R9X's first use is believed to have been against al-Qaeda commander Abu al-Khayr al-Masri who was killed in Syria's Idlib in March 2017. al-Masri targeted when he was travelling in a car. Like al-Zawahiri, no explosion occurred, but the car ended up with a huge hole in the roof, as per reports. All of the car's passengers had been shredded to death, but the front and rear of al-Masri's vehicle had remained intact.
The second probable use of the R9X took place against another al-Qaeda terrorist Jamal al-Badawi who was killed near Yemen's Sanaa in January 2019. An airstrike hit al-Badawi when he was alone in a vehicle. He was killed for his role in the bombing of American warship USS Cole. The attack in the year 2000 had killed 17 soldiers at a Yemeni port.
Another instance of the R9X's use is believed to have been a deadly attack on a top Iranian military commander. General Qassem Soleimani, who was head of Iran's elite Quds Force, was killed at the Baghdad airport in January 2020. A drone strike at his convoy had also killed leaders of Iran-backed militias in the region.
Reports say that the R9X 'Ninja Bomb' had been part of Plan B to kill 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden. But the final operation was carried out on the ground by US Special Forces.
So what motivated America to develop a sword missile?
The Hellfire's R9X variant was reportedly designed during Barack Obama's tenure as US President. The objective behind the project was to avoid civilian deaths and reduce collateral damage in countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Somalia, Yemen etc.

al-Zawahiri played a big role in the 9/11 terror attacks, and was also blamed for the 1998 bombings at US embassies in Tanzania, and Kenya. US President Joe Biden called al-Zawahiri's death a moment of justice for almost 3,000 terror victims and their families.
al-Zawahiri became the leader of al-Qaeda after bin Laden's death. The US had placed a $25 million bounty on al-Zawahiri's head. He was born in 1951 in a prominent Egyptian family, and had been an eye surgeon when he was young.

The United Nations mission in Afghanistan condemned Friday's attack, saying it was 'part of a disturbing pattern of violence' targeting religious institutions.

At least 100 people have been killed or injured after an explosion&nbsp;at a mosque packed with worshippers for Friday prayers in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz, according to a police official.&nbsp;
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast but&nbsp;the deputy police chief for Kunduz province said the attack may have been carried out by a suicide bomber who had mingled among the worshipers inside the mosque.

IS maintains a strong presence in the eastern province of Nangarhar and considers the Taliban an enemy. It has claimed several attacks against them, including several killings in the provincial capital of Jalalabad.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a telephone call with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in late August reportedly suggested that the global community should provide the Taliban with guidance so that Afghanistan's new political system can support government operations and services.
China expressed fear that the absence of security forces might lead to anti-Beijing elements regrouping in the region. China believes that the withdrawal of the US forces in Afghanistan could allow the regrouping of Uyghur separatist groups based in Xinjiang and facilitate their operations from Afghanistan.
Further, The East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), declared an international terrorist group by the United Nations Security Council, is believed to pose a direct threat to China's national security and territorial integrity.
China has blamed the US for the current Afghanistan situation, claiming that the US troops' withdrawal from the region can pave the way for a wider insurgency.
