Justice DY Chandrachud on Wednesday was sworn in as Chief Justice of India after Justice Uday Umesh Lalit demitted office.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/justice-dy-chandrachud-appointed-next-chief-justice-of-india-1666022416230">Justice DY Chandrachud</a> at the swearing-in ceremony held in the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and others were present on the occasion.
The senior-most judge of the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/10-quota-for-poor-cleared-by-supreme-court-1667799702752">Supreme Court of India</a> Justice D Y Chandrachud on Wednesday has become the 50th head of the Judiciary of the country. He will have a tenure till November 10, 2024. Last Month the Centre Government had notified the name of Dr Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India, with effect from November 9, 2022.
The press statement issued in this regards stated that "In exercise of the power conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Dr Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India, with effect from November 9, 2022." Justice Chandrachud's father Justice YV Chandrachud was the 16th Chief Justice of India serving from February 2, 1978, to July 11, 1985.
This has become the first time in the history of the judiciary, Father and son have become CJI.

SC dismisses plea against CJI-designate Justice Chandrachud 

The Supreme Court on Wednesday decided to hear during the day a plea seeking to restrain the senior most judge, Justice D Y Chandrachud, from taking oath as the Chief Justice of India on November 9.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit said instead of Thursday, it will hear the petition at 12.45 pm when a lawyer mentioned the case for hearing on Thursday.
&ldquo;Get the paper books for my brother and sister (Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Bela M Trivedi). We will list the matter at 12.45 pm today itself,&rdquo; the CJI said.

SC to hear plea against CJI-designate Justice Chandrachud 

Earlier, the bench headed by Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit agreed to hear the plea during the day itself, instead of Thursday.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a plea seeking to restrain its seniormost judge, Justice D Y Chandrachud, from taking oath as the Chief Justice of India on November 9 by terming the entire petition "misconceived".
"Having heard the counsel, we see no reason to hear.... We find the entire petition to be misconceived," a bench of the apex court said.
Earlier, the bench headed by Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit agreed to hear the plea during the day itself, instead of Thursday.
"Get the paper books for my brother and sister (justices S Ravindra Bhat and Bela M Trivedi). We will list the matter at 12.45 pm today itself," the CJI said.
Justice Chandrachud, the CJI-designate, is set to take oath as the 50th Chief Justice of India on November 9.
The plea was filed by one Mursalin Asijith Shaikh.&nbsp;

 Justice DY Chandrachud appointed next Chief Justice of India

Justice D Y Chandrachud was on Monday appointed the 50th Chief Justice of India.

He will take oath on November 9, a day after incumbent CJI Justice Uday Umesh Lalit demits office on attaining the age of 65.

He will take oath on November 9, a day after incumbent CJI Justice Uday Umesh Lalit demits office on attaining the age of 65.
While Justice Lalit has a brief tenure of 74 days, Justice Chandrachud will serve as the CJI for two years.
"In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon'ble President appoints Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 9th November, 22," Rijiju tweeted.
Justice Chandrachud will demit office on November 10, 2024.
On October 7, the government had sent a letter to CJI Lalit, who is set to retire on November 8, to recommend his successor.
According to the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP), which governs the process of appointment of judges in the higher judiciary, the outgoing CJI initiates the process of naming the successor after getting a communication from the Law ministry.

The MoP says the senior-most judge of the apex court is considered fit to hold the office of the CJI and the views of the outgoing head of the judiciary have to be sought "at an appropriate time".
The MoP, however, does not specify the time limit for the initiation of the process of recommending the name of the successor CJI.
