Australia's prime minister said Wednesday a string of recent non-disclosed missions to the United States helped forge the plea deal that freed Julian Assange.
The 52-year-old WikiLeaks founder landed in Canberra hours earlier, after earning his liberty by pleading guilty to a single count of conspiracy to obtain and disseminate US national defence information.
He was sentenced by a court in the US Pacific territory of Northern Mariana Islands to time already served in London's high-security Belmarsh prison -- five years and two months -- and allowed to walk free.
The US Department of Justice had to make a "range of decisions" for the plea deal to proceed, Anthony Albanese told a news conference in Canberra, stressing that the US department was independent and "not subject to political influence".
A "whole range of people" had visited the United States as the deal was worked out, the Australian leader told reporters.
"I am surprised that some of it was missed by the people in this room -- some of the visits -- but it's not up to me to indicate that," Albanese said.
He advised journalists to "go back and look at some diaries and who has travelled to the United States in recent months".
Albanese said he had exchanged "directly" with Assange's lawyers during the negotiations.
Australia's high commissioner to the United Kingdom, Stephen Smith, also acted as a conduit for communication, visiting Assange in Belmarsh, the prime minister said.
"The details of the plea deal were worked through over a period of time," he said.
"This was the only way that I could see a resolution being achieved -- and the objective here was to conclude these matters."
Albanese said he had never met with Assange but spoke with him the moment his jet touched down in Canberra as part of a mutually agreed plan.
"I had a very warm discussion with him this evening. He was very generous in his praise of the Australian government's efforts," he added.
"The Australian government stands up for Australian citizens. That's what we do."&nbsp;

His white hair swept back, the Australian raised a fist as he emerged from the plane door, striding across the tarmac to give a hug to his wife Stella that lifted her off the ground, and then to embrace his father.

Assange's long battle with US prosecutors came to an unexpected end in the Northern Mariana Islands where a judge accepted his guilty plea on a single count of conspiracy to obtain and disseminate national defence information.
The remote courtroom was chosen because of the 52-year-old's unwillingness to go to the continental United States and because of its proximity to Australia.
<h2>&nbsp;'A free man'&nbsp;</h2>
&nbsp;As part of a behind-the-scenes legal negotiation with the US Justice Department he was sentenced to the time he had already served in London -- five years and two months -- and given his liberty.
"You will be able to walk out of this courtroom a free man," the judge told him.
Assange had published hundreds of thousands of confidential US documents on the whistleblowing website from 2010.
He became a hero to free speech campaigners but a villain to those who thought he endangered US security and intelligence sources.
"Working as a journalist, I encouraged my source to provide material that was said to be classified," Assange told the court.
Assange's lawyer Jen Robinson told reporters it was a "historic day" that "brings to an end 14 years of legal battles".
"It also brings to an end a case which has been recognised as the greatest threat to the First Amendment in the 21st century," she said.
<h2>'Too long'</h2>
Australian Prime Minster Anthony Albanese said he was "very pleased" by the outcome.
"Regardless of your views about his activities, and they will be varied, Mr Assange's case has dragged on for too long," he told parliament in Canberra.
The United Nations also hailed Assange's release, saying the case had raised human rights concerns.
But former US vice president Mike Pence slammed the plea deal on social media platform X as a "miscarriage of justice" that "dishonors the service and sacrifice of the men and women of our Armed Forces."
The US justice department said after the hearing that Assange was banned from returning there without permission.
US authorities had wanted to put Assange on trial for divulging military secrets about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He was indicted by a US federal grand jury in 2019 on 18 counts stemming from WikiLeaks' publication of a trove of national security documents.
The material he released through WikiLeaks included video showing civilians being killed by fire from a US helicopter gunship in Iraq in 2007. The victims included a photographer and a driver from Reuters.

In 2019 he was arrested and held in Belmarsh prison while fighting extradition to the United States.
He had spent seven years in Ecuador's embassy in London to avoid being extradited to Sweden, where he faced accusations of sexual assault that were eventually dropped.
He met his wife Stella Assange while holed up in the embassy, and the pair married in a ceremony in London's Belmarsh prison. They have two young children.
"I can't stop crying," Stella, who was waiting for him in Australia, said on X.
"I am beyond excited," she later told reporters as she left a Canberra hotel together with Assange's father to see her husband at the airport.
The announcement of the plea deal came two weeks before Assange was scheduled to appear in court in Britain to appeal against a ruling that approved his extradition to the United States.
Washington had accused Assange under the 1917 Espionage Act and supporters warned he risked being sentenced to 175 years in prison.
The plea deal was not entirely unexpected. US President Joe Biden had been under growing pressure to drop the long-running case against Assange.
The Australian government made an official request to that effect in February and Biden said he would consider it, raising hopes among Assange supporters that his ordeal might end.

The plea was entered Wednesday morning in federal court in Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. commonwealth in the Pacific. He arrived at court shortly before the hearing was to begin, wearing a dark suit with a tie loosened at the collar, and entered the building without taking questions.
Though the deal with prosecutors required him to admit guilt to a single felony count, it would also permit him to return to his native Australia without spending any time in an American prison. He had been jailed in the United Kingdom for the last five years, fighting extradition to the United States on an Espionage Act indictment that could have carried a lengthy prison sentence in the event of a conviction.
The abrupt conclusion enables both sides to claim a degree of victory, with the Justice Department able to resolve without trial a case that raised thorny legal issues and that might never have reached a jury at all given the plodding pace of the extradition process. Meanwhile, Assange's wife, Stella, told the BBC that she was &ldquo;elated&rdquo; at the news as her husband flew on a chartered jet to Saipan en route to walking free.
WikiLeaks, the secret-spilling website that Assange founded in 2006, applauded the announcement of the deal, saying it was grateful for &ldquo;all who stood by us, fought for us, and remained utterly committed in the fight for his freedom.&rdquo; The deal, disclosed Monday night in a sparsely detailed Justice Department letter, represents the latest and presumably final chapter in a court fight involving the eccentric Australian computer expert who has been celebrated by supporters as a transparency crusader but lambasted by national security hawks who insist that his disdain for government secrecy put lives at risks and strayed far beyond the bounds of traditional journalism duties.
The U.S. Justice Department agreed to hold the hearing on the remote island because Assange opposed coming to the continental U.S. and because it's near Australia, where he will return after he enters his plea.
The guilty plea resolves a criminal case brought by the Trump administration Justice Department in connection with the receipt and publication of war logs and diplomatic cables that detailed U.S. military wrongdoing in Iraq and Afghanistan. Prosecutors alleged that he conspired with former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to obtain the records and published them without regard to American national security, including by releasing the names of human sources who provided information to U.S. forces.
But his activities drew an outpouring of support from press freedom advocates, who heralded his role in bringing to light military conduct that might otherwise have been concealed from view. Among the files published by WikiLeaks was a video of a 2007 Apache helicopter attack by American forces in Baghdad that killed 11 people, including two Reuters journalists.
The indictment was unsealed in 2019, but Assange's legal woes long predated the criminal case and continued well past it.
Weeks after the release of the largest document cache in 2010, a Swedish prosecutor issued an arrest warrant for Assange based on one woman's allegation of rape and another's allegation of molestation. Assange has long maintained his innocence, and the investigation was later dropped.
He presented himself in 2012 to the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he claimed asylum on the grounds of political persecution, and spent the following seven years in self-exile there, hosting a parade of celebrity visitors and making periodic appearances from the building's balcony to address supporters.
In 2019, his hosts revoked his asylum, allowing British police to arrest him. He remained locked up for the last five years while the Justice Department sought to extradite him, in a process that encountered skepticism from British judges who worried about how Assange would be treated by the American criminal justice system.
Ultimately, though, the resolution sparing Assange prison time in the U.S. is a repudiation of sorts of years of ominous warnings by Assange and his supporters that the American criminal justice system would expose him to unduly harsh treatment, including potentially the death penalty -- something prosecutors never sought.&nbsp;

Washington wants the 52-year-old Australian citizen extradited after he was charged there multiple times between 2018 and 2020 in connection with WikiLeaks' 2010 publication of files relating to the US-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The long-running legal saga in Britain's courts is now nearing a conclusion, after Assange lost successive rulings in recent years.
If this week's two-day bid to appeal -- set to begin at 10:30 am (1030 GMT) Tuesday -- is successful, he will have another chance to argue his case in a London court, with a date set for a full hearing.
If he loses, Assange will have exhausted all UK appeals and will enter the extradition process, although his team have indicated they will appeal to European courts.
His wife Stella Assange has said he will ask the European Court of Human Rights to temporarily halt the extradition if needed, warning he would die if sent to the United States.
"Tomorrow and the day after will determine whether he lives or dies essentially, and he's physically and mentally obviously in a very difficult place," she told BBC radio on Monday.

But Washington has maintained the case, which alleges Assange and others at WikiLeaks recruited and agreed with hackers to conduct "one of the largest compromises of classified information" in US history.
Assange, detained in the high-security Belmarsh Prison in southeast London since April 2019, was arrested after spending seven years holed up in Ecuador's London embassy.
He fled there to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faced accusations of sexual assault which were later dropped.
The High Court had blocked his extradition, but then reversed the decision on appeal in 2021 after the United States vowed to not imprison him in its most extreme prison, "ADX Florence".
It also pledged not to subject him to the harsh regime known as "Special Administrative Measures".
In March 2022, the UK's Supreme Court refused permission to appeal, arguing Assange failed to "raise an arguable point of law".
Months later, ex-interior minister Priti Patel formally signed off on his extradition, but Assange is now seeking permission to review that decision and the 2021 appeal ruling.
If convicted in the United States, he faces a maximum sentence of 175 years in jail.
Kristinn Hrafnsson, WikiLeaks' editor-in-chief, told reporters last week that caveats included within the US promises meant they were "not worth the paper they are written on".

Albanese compared Assange's treatment to that of former US Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, who the prime minister said was "now able to participate freely in US society&rdquo;.
