One of the world's oldest newspapers, the Vienna-based Wiener Zeitung, ended its daily print run Friday after more than three centuries.
First published under the name Wiennerisches Diarium, the paper set out to provide a sober account of the news &ldquo;without any oratory or poetic gloss&rdquo; when it was launched on August 8, 1703.
&ldquo;320 years, 12 presidents, 10 emperors, 2 republics, 1 newspaper,&rdquo; the print edition's final front page read.
The Wiener Zeitung, which is owned by the Austrian government but editorially independent, suffered a sharp decrease in revenue after a recent law dropped a requirement for companies to pay to publish changes to the commercial registry in the print edition.
The newspaper, which is considered a quality publication with a wide range of articles covering domestic and foreign news, culture and business, was forced to cut 63 jobs and reduce its editorial staff by almost two-thirds to 20.
It will continue to operate online and plans a monthly print edition.
In its final daily print edition the paper interviewed one of Austria's most famous exports: actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger.
It lamented that, unlike Schwarzenegger's famous &ldquo;Terminator&rdquo; character, the newspaper won't be able to make the phrase &ldquo;I'll be back&rdquo; its motto for the future.&nbsp;

Less number of people are taking a strong interest in the news compared to 2017, according to a report by Reuters Institute.&nbsp;
The report says 48% of people globally are very or extremely interested in the news, down from 63% in 2017. 36% of people sometimes or often actively avoid the news.
Titled 'The Digital News Report 2023', the survey stated that there was evidence that people 'continue to selectively avoid important stories such as the war in Ukraine and the cost-of-living crisis as they cut back on depressing news and look to protect their mental health'.
It also concluded that traditional TV and print news media continued to decline while online consumers are accessing news less frequently than before.&nbsp;
56% of the people expressed concerns about differentiating between real and fake news online. An increase of 2% from 2022.&nbsp;

The NYT accidentally exposed the apparent phone numbers of Russian soldiers who criticized the war.

In September, 2022, The New York Times accidentally exposed the apparent phone numbers of Russian soldiers as well as the apparent civilian family members they were speaking to.
A report published by Motherboard (Tech by Vice) reported that some of these people were not only providing frank assessment of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war but also criticism of their superiors including the President. Besides, the exposure potentially puts the people at risk of reprisal from their own government and other third parties.
The news highlights not only the risks phones pose in wartime, but also the security hazards that can be posed by journalists handling leaked information.&nbsp;
When Motherboard contacted, the Times initially said that it took steps to delete the metadata but failed to scrub several audio files. It said that the metadata was up for only a "few hours.&rdquo;&nbsp;
&ldquo;Before publication, we worked to remove identifying information from the story. We later learned that some buried metadata was live on the site for a few hours, and took prompt steps to remove it,&rdquo; Charlie Stadtlander, director, external communications, newsroom, at the New York Times initially told Motherboard in a statement.

More than 70 journalists have been killed this year and a record number of media persons are incarcerated today while threats of imprisonment, violence and death against them keep growing, UN chief Antonio Guterres said on Monday

Guterres' remarks came ahead of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists on November 2.

More than 70 journalists have been killed this year and a record number of media persons are incarcerated today while threats of imprisonment, violence and death against them keep growing, UN chief Antonio Guterres said on Monday and called on governments and the international community to take the necessary steps to protect them.
Guterres' remarks came ahead of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists on November 2.
"A free press is vital to a functioning democracy, exposing wrongdoing, navigating the complex world and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals," the Secretary-General said.
"Yet, more than 70 journalists have been killed this year simply for fulfilling this role in society. Most of these crimes go unsolved. Meanwhile, a record number of journalists are incarcerated today, while threats of imprisonment, violence and death keep growing," he said.
A surge in disinformation, online bullying and hate speech, particularly against women journalists, is contributing to the stifling of media workers around the world, he said.
"Intimidation through the abuse of legal, financial and other means is undermining efforts to hold the powerful accountable. These trends threaten not only journalists, but society as a whole," he said.
The United Nations Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists aims to create a safe and free environment for all media workers.

"As we mark its tenth anniversary, I call on Governments and the international community to take the necessary steps to protect our journalists. We must end a common culture of impunity and enable journalists to do their essential work," Guterres said.
"On this International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, let us honour our media workers, and stand up for truth, justice and human rights for all," he added.

A senior functionary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or RSS, criticised "negative journalism" and said that it originated in the West.
Narendra Kumar, who is RSS' Akhil Bharatiya Sah Prachar Pramukh, or a senior leader in the publicity wing, said that it is the responsibility of reporters to reduce "negativity" in news.
He was speaking at an event organised by Vishwa Sanvad Kendra in Maharashtra's Nagpur on May 23. The RSS leader said that journalism began in India with positive views.
He added, "The theory of negative journalism has come from the West. Their thoughts mostly move towards negative things...they are directed towards negativity only as they have never done good works. When they (the West) moved around the world with their thoughts and thinking, they destroyed the culture of others, finished their beliefs and signs of faith."
Kumar also criticised efforts to form a particular narrative in news, education, and history.
