Australia&rsquo;s ICC Champions Trophy squad faces major setbacks as Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are ruled out due to injuries, and Marcus Stoinis announces his ODI retirement.

Australian skipper Pat Cummins and pacer Josh Hazlewood are set to miss the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy due to injuries, further depleting Australia's already weakened squad.&nbsp;
With Mitchell Marsh sidelined due to a back injury and Marcus Stoinis announcing his shock retirement from ODI cricket, the team's options for pace bowling have become even more limited.&nbsp;
Cummins is struggling with an ankle injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, while Hazlewood is dealing with a hip issue, following previous side and calf strains. Both pacers will need extended rehabilitation before they can return to action.
The news of Cummins and Hazlewood's exclusion came on the same day Stoinis announced his ODI retirement. With these absences, Australia will now need at least four replacements, including two all-rounders, to cover for the loss of balance and experience in the team. The final squad will be announced after the second Test against Sri Lanka, which is currently ongoing in Galle.
Marsh had already withdrawn from the tournament due to his back injury, which has worsened over time and impacted his workload during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, leading him to miss the final Test. He is currently undergoing rehab. As for Cummins and Hazlewood, both will need time to recover and may also miss the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL).
Looking ahead, Australia's next international commitment after the Champions Trophy will be the ICC World Test Championship final against South Africa in mid-June at Lord's.&nbsp;
George Bailey, chairperson of the national selection panel, said, "Unfortunately Pat, Josh and Mitch are managing some ongoing injuries and have not come up in time for the Champion's Trophy. While disappointing, it does present a great opportunity for other players to perform for Australia in a world event."
Coach Andrew McDonald has suggested Steve Smith and Travis Head as possible alternate captains for the team. Australia&rsquo;s campaign opener will be a high-profile clash with arch-rivals England in Lahore on February 22, followed by matches against South Africa and Afghanistan in Rawalpindi on February 25 and 28, respectively.

Cummins said he had to take the ball away from Hazlewood at Perth to prevent his injury getting worse.

Australian captain Pat Cummins on Friday announced that pacer Josh Hazlewood will replace Scott Boland in his playing XI for the third Test against India after having recovered from a side strain.
The injury had forced Hazlewood to sit out of the Pink Ball Test in Adelaide last week. Cummins exuded confidence that Hazlewood would pull through the match without any "hiccups".
"He had a really good bowl yesterday, he had another bowl in Adelaide a couple of days previously. Him and the medical team are really confident," he said on the eve of the game at the Gabba.
Cummins said he had to take the ball away from Hazlewood at Perth to prevent his injury getting worse.
"We've seen it a few times where Josh has pushed through to get through a Test match and a little bit of soreness turns into a month or two of injury.
"So, we made the call then that it probably wasn't worth the risk of keeping him bowling. I think he bowled an extra two overs leading into tea break and he said it felt ok, but I just kind of thought from there, 'that's enough'," said Cummins.
The Australian captain was sympathetic for Boland after the veteran pacer made a stirring return to Test cricket at Adelaide after last year's Ashes.
Boland had a match-haul of five wickets that included the prized scalp of star India batter Virat Kohli in the second innings.
"It's tough. He was fantastic in Adelaide. Unfortunately, he's spent quite a bit of time on the bench over the last 18 months and whenever he plays he's fantastic.
"It's a shame for Scotty, but still a fair bit to play out this series. I'd be surprised if he didn't play again in this series," said the New South Wales player.

Green is fading at Gabba
The green tinge on the Brisbane deck was significantly reduced on the match eve.
Once a fortress of the Aussies, India had breached the 'Gabba' barrier during the 2020-21 series to end the hosts' winning run dating back to 1988.
After that the West Indies too beat Australia here, riding on the back of pacer Shamar Joseph's heroics.
"I looked at it yesterday &ndash; it looked like a good wicket, like it has been the last few years," said Cummins.
"A bit of sun baking it the last couple of days (means) I don't think it's as green and leafy as it was against South Africa," he said.
Cummins was referring to the Test against South Africa here in 2022 which ended inside two days.
The 31-year-old also did not read too much into that recent vulnerability of his side in Brisbane.
"It's just a venue really. We play at dozens and dozens of venues each year. It's always good coming back to a place that's familiar &hellip; but the scoreboard starts at 0-0, so the venue isn't the be-all and end-all," he added.

Steven Smith (11) and Usman Khawaja (9) easily completed that total for Australia, although Khawaja retired hurt after being hit by a bouncer with Australia needing one run to win. Marnus Labuschagne hit the winning run two balls later.
Hazlewood already had four for 18 at the start of the day, as he helped Australia reduce the West Indies to 73 for six in its second innings before stumps on the second day. Australia led by 95 runs on the first innings after making 283 in reply to the West Indies 188.
&ldquo;It's nice to have the weekend off now. It's nice as a group to play on that wicket. It felt like there was enough there the whole game," Hazlewood said.
&ldquo;I felt I bowled just as well in the first half of the summer with no result. The wickets have been really good and playing with this team, it feels relentless and the pressure just builds all the time.&rdquo; Australia captain Pat Cummins said, &ldquo;It was a wicket where you always felt like there might be a ball that nips and you were in the game even when someone was scoring a few runs." &ldquo;The big fella (Hazlewood) really turned it on for us this week. We had a decent lead but not a huge lead and he took the game away from them in one spell really.&rdquo; The big question at the start of the day was whether the West Indies would be able to make Australia bat again. It began to look unlikely when Mitchell Starc dismissed Joshua da Silva (18) and Alzarri Joseph (16) and Hazlewood bowled Gudakesh Motie (3) to leave the West Indies 94 for nine, still needing one run to avoid an innings defeat.
Shamar Joseph and Kemar Roche again produced a small rearguard action, adding 26 for the last wicket after putting on 55 for the last wicket in the first innings. Joseph already was a star of the match for his 36 in the first innings and his five 94 on debut.
He hit three boundaries on Friday to add a little to the West Indies lead before he was the last man out.
West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite said Shamar Joseph was a joy to be around.
&ldquo;He's full of energy and he makes me laugh a lot,&rdquo; Brathwaite said. &ldquo;He has a lot of talent, a lot of skill and he can score some runs as well.&rdquo; &ldquo;I thought our bowlers did extremely well to bowl out Australia for less than 300. We obviously didn't bat well both innings. Our top order didn't get going." The second and final test between the teams begins January 25 in Brisbane, a day-night match at the Gabba.
With that, the Aussies took an unassailable 1-0 lead in the 2-match Test series. The 2nd and final match, which is a Day/Night Test, will be played in Brisbane from January 25.
