Former US president Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an "aggressive" form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, and is reviewing treatment options, his office said Sunday.
On Friday, the 82-year-old Democrat -- whose son Beau Biden died of cancer in 2015 -- was diagnosed with the disease after he experienced urinary symptoms and a prostate nodule was found, a statement from his office said.
"While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians," it continued.
US President Donald Trump, who has long derided political rival Biden over his cognitive abilities, said he was "saddened" by the news.
"We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery," Republican Trump said on Truth Social, referring to Biden's wife, Jill Biden.
"Joe is a fighter," Biden's vice president, Kamala Harris, who stepped in as Democratic nominee in the battle against Trump after Biden dropped out of last year's presidential election, said in a post on X.
"I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery," she continued.
Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men, with the American Cancer Society reporting one in eight men in the United States are diagnosed with it over their lifetime.
While it is highly treatable if discovered early, it is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, the organization said.
Hormone therapy is a common treatment that can shrink tumors and slow cancer growth, but is not a cure.
According to the statement, Biden's cancer was found to have "a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5)."
Prostate cancer that looks "very abnormal" is assigned the highest rating, Grade 5, according to the American Cancer Society. The Gleason Score goes up to 10, indicating the seriousness of Biden's disease.

Biden left office in January this year as the oldest serving US president in history, and was dogged by questions, including from Democratic voters, over his health and age for much of his term -- and whether he could handle the office's demands.
His response was a brisk: "Watch me."
In July last year, he was forced to drop his reelection bid after a disastrous debate against Trump in which fears about his decline and cognitive abilities came surging to the fore.
Support rocketed for Harris as she stepped up to the plate, but she eventually lost to Trump.
Biden, who beat Trump at the polls in 2020, maintains that he could have won the 2024 election too, but questions have long swirled over the responses of staff and key Democrats to his decline.
They have flared with the upcoming release of a new book on his "disastrous" choice to run again, and the publication last week of a recording of him speaking hesitantly and struggling to recall key events and dates.
Biden's life has been marked by personal tragedy. In 1972, his first wife and baby daughter were killed in a car crash.
His son Beau Biden died aged 46 of an aggressive form of brain cancer in 2015, a loss which touched many Americans.
In the wake of Beau Biden's death, then-president Barack Obama launched a "cancer moonshot" bid to corral the disease in the United States, tasking Biden, then his vice president, with leading the effort.
"It's personal for me," Biden said at the time.
"But it's also personal for nearly every American, and millions of people around the world. We all know someone who has had cancer, or is fighting to beat it."
"Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe," Obama said Sunday.
"I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace," he added in a statement on X.
Trump's administration cut cancer research funding by 31 percent in the first three months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, a Senate report showed earlier this month.
Americans in the capital Washington lamented the diagnosis Sunday.
Ariale Booker, a Washington resident who said her mother and grandmother had both died of cancer, described it as "heartbreaking."
"I think that's just really sad," she told AFP.
"His last years, his life's going to be really hard."

In a primetime speech from the Oval Office at the end of his single term in office, he warned of an ultra-wealthy "tech industrial complex" that he said could gain unchecked power over the American people.
"Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms," the 82-year-old Democrat said.
Biden began his speech by touting the legacy of his four years in office, saying it may take time to feel the benefits but that the "seeds were planted" for Americans in the future.
But he soon turned to painting a series of dangers that he said were facing the United States, which clearly referred to billionaire Trump's close ties to the world's richest man, Elon Musk, and other tech tycoons.
Biden warned there was a "dangerous concentration of power in the hands of a very few ultra-wealthy people" with "dangerous consequences if their abuse of power is left unchecked."

He then lashed out at social media firms, with Musk having turned X into a right-wing megaphone and Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg ending fact-checking operations in the US as he courts Trump.

"The free press is crumbling. Editors are disappearing. Social media is giving up on fact checking. The truth is smothered by lies told for power and for profit."
He recalled a stark warning issued by president Dwight Eisenhower in his own farewell address in 1961 about the dangers of an out-of-control military industrial complex.
"I'm equally concerned about the potential rise of a tech industrial complex," he said.
With Trump planning to roll back US commitments to reduce global warming, Biden further warned that "powerful forces" threatened his climate achievements.
He also cautioned over the rise of AI, saying that America must take the lead over China on the transformative technology.
Biden finished by sounding a valedictory tone at the end of a 50-year political career that has seen the former senator mount several failed presidential bids before becoming Barack Obama's vice president, and finally rising to the top himself.
"It's been the highest honor of my life to lead you as commander in chief," said Biden.
Signing off as Trump returns for a second term on Monday, Biden told Americans: "Now it's your turn to stand guard."

Instead, America's oldest ever president has spent much of his final months in office trying to burnish his legacy before he is replaced by the man he beat in the 2020 election -- a result Trump still disputes.
Biden's efforts got a boost earlier Wednesday when Israel and Hamas agreed to a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal, with Biden hailing rare cooperation with Trump's team to reach an accord.

Polls show Biden remains an unpopular president. A CNN poll published Wednesday showed him with a 36 percent approval rating, remaining at the lowest of his term.
That puts him above Trump, who left office with a 34 percent approval rating, according to the American Presidency Project. The lowest in recent times was Richard Nixon with 24 percent while the highest was Bill Clinton with 66 percent, followed by Barack Obama with 59 percent."

The electric vehicle -- made by the company owned by Trump backer Elon Musk -- pulled up to the Trump International Hotel's glass entrance before a "large explosion," Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill told reporters.
Video footage shows the stainless steel truck parked at the hotel entrance before bursting into flames, followed by smaller explosions that appeared similar to fireworks.
McMahill said there was "one deceased individual inside the Cybertruck," while seven people received "minor" injuries. He said the hotel had been evacuated.
He told a later news conference that the back of the truck contained gasoline and camping fuel canisters, as well as "large firework mortars."
McMahill also said the fact that it was a Cybertruck "really limited the damage... because it had most of the blast go up through the truck and out," noting that the glass doors of the hotel, just a few feet away, "were not even broken by that blast."
Biden said authorities were probing "any possible connection with the attack in New Orleans."
"Thus far, there's nothing to report on that score," he said.
FBI agent Jeremy Schwartz described the Las Vegas blast as "an isolated incident."
He said that an FBI joint terrorism task force was conducting the investigation with two main goals -- to confirm the identity of the "subject involved in this incident" and to determine "whether this was an act of terrorism or not."

There had been indications that the suspect in the New Orleans attack had been inspired by the Islamic State group, Biden said.
McMahill said they had "no indication" so far that the blast in Las Vegas had any similar links to the jihadist group.
However, he added: "It's a Tesla truck, and we know Elon Musk is working with President-elect Trump, and it's the Trump tower."
"So there's obviously things to be concerned about there and that's something we continue to look at," McMahill said.
Musk, who backed Trump in the November election and was named by the Republican to head up a commission to trim government spending, said in a post on his social media platform X that the explosion was "unrelated to the vehicle itself."
He said earlier the "whole Tesla senior team" was investigating the blast, adding: "We've never seen anything like this."
The truck had been rented in Colorado through the carsharing company Turo, police said -- the same app that was used to rent the vehicle in the New Orleans attack.
McMahill said that was a "coincidence... that we have to continue to look in to."
A spokesperson for the app, used by millions of people in the United States, said they were working with law enforcement, but that neither renter "had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat."

In a statement, Biden said the new assistance will provide Ukraine with "an immediate influx of capabilities that it continues to use to great effect on the battlefield and longer-term supplies of air defense, artillery, and other critical weapons systems."

"And we have been working closely with the interim government to enhance the capability of their law enforcement and security services to deal with the challenge," Kirby said at a news conference on Thursday.
Hasina was ousted as prime minister in the face of a massive anti-government protest in August.
There have been a spate of incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities, as well as attacks on temples in the last few weeks in Bangladesh.
"We&rsquo;ve been very clear in our engagement with all Bangladeshi leaders that protection of religious and ethnic minorities is absolutely critical, and the leaders of the interim government have repeatedly committed to providing security to all Bangladeshis, regardless of religion or ethnicity," he said.
"We want to hold them to that," Kirby said in response to a question.
Over the past few weeks, Indian Americans have held peaceful protests and marches in several cities, including in front of the White House, in Chicago, New York, SFO, Detroit, Houston and Atlanta, urging Biden to help stop alleged brutalities against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh.
Earlier in the day, Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi urged members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to address the issue of violence against minorities, primarily Hindus, in Bangladesh during the confirmation hearing of Senator Marco Rubio for the position of secretary of state.
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Senator Rubio for the top diplomatic position. The date of his confirmation hearing has not been announced yet.

Over the weekend, a large number of Indian-Americans held a march from the White House to the US Capitol over alleged attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.

It was shaped to be a document that could help the next administration build its approach from day one on how it will go about dealing with the tightening relationships between the United States' most prominent adversaries and competitors, according to two senior administration officials.
The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity under ground rules set by the White House, said the classified memorandum would not be made public because of the sensitivity of some of its findings.
The document includes four broad recommendations: improving US government interagency cooperation, speeding up the sharing of information with allies about the four adversaries, calibrating the US government's use of sanctions and other economic tools for maximum effectiveness, and bolstering preparation to manage simultaneous crises involving the adversaries.

The officials noted that as Russia has become more isolated from much of the world, Moscow has turned to Iran for drones and missiles.

&ldquo;I can respond to all this by saying clearly and unequivocally: I wouldn&rsquo;t be running again if I did not absolutely believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024,&rdquo; asserted the president, who after his June 27 disastrous debate performance has been receiving calls to drop out of the race.
Biden has insisted that he is in the race and he will not give up.
So far only a small section of the Democratic leadership have asked him to leave the race to the presidency.
A majority of the party leadership has been supporting him so far. The virtual meeting was billed as a "listening session" to get inputs from members about the viability of Biden's candidacy, "The New York Times" reported, adding that it was clear before the call that many top Democrats felt strongly that Biden had to go.
Congressman Smith, the ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, said it is time for Biden to go, according to two people familiar with the call, the daily reported. The four other Congressmen also felt the same and believed it was time for Biden to exit the race.
"Lieu was the highest-ranking person in the House Democratic leadership to support pressing for Biden to not seek reelection," "The Washington Post" reported.
"The developments opened a wide crack in Biden's wall of support, bringing the number of House Democrats publicly or privately saying he should step aside to about 10. They included the top Democrats on the Judiciary, Armed Services and Intelligence committees.
