It's been almost four years since the threat of Covid-19 has ruled our lives. While slowly life was returning to normal after the pandemic, looks like a new threat has emerged in the form of a new variant, the JN.1 variant of Covid-19. The symptoms of the virus is similar to a common cold and flu and many in India have been detected with the new variant.
We at Editorji spoke to Dr. Venkat Ramesh, Infectious Disease Physician, Apollo Hyderabad. The doctor gave us insights into what are precautions to take, whether there is a reason to panic and how to detect it.
How different are JN.1 symptoms?
According to Dr Venkat the symptoms of JN.1 variant are as similar to a viral flu and cold-like fever, running nose accompanied by sore throat, diarrhea and headache. It is difficult to determine the symptoms.
Speaking about how to know if you have JN.1. the doctor said, "The only way to determine if one has Covid is to get tested. It is not possible to distinguish this new variant from a common cold or a flu. Only testing will tell us if it is SARS-COV 2 and a certain percentage of these samples are tested for they undergo what is called genomic sequencing, where we look at the DNA and RNA structure of the virus and determine what strain it belongs to."

It was back in 2020 when we were first introduced to the dangers of Covid-19. Now, almost four years later we are still reeling under the dangers of covid. A new variant of Covid-19, the JN.1 variant is the new source of concern. From Delhi to Kerala, many states have reported an increasing number of Covid cases in the past days.
While we pick up masks and sanitise hands to stay safe, we at Editorji spoke to Dr Venkat Ramesh, Infectious Disease Physician, Apollo Hyderabad. The doctor gave us insights into what are precautions to take, whether there is a reason to panic and how lethal is this new variant.
How lethal is the JN.1 variant?
Speaking exclusively to Editorji, Dr Venkat said, "What is really of concern with any new variant is two things: one: is it more transmissible and two is it more lethal and deadly. In general, a virus that is more transmissible is going to result in increased mortality even if it does not per say increase mortality. This is because it will infect number of people and with any viral infection there will be a certain number of people who will die due to the severity of the infection."
He further added if the variant is of concern and said, "Is it a variant of concern? According to the WHO, it is still a variant of interest and not a variant of concern. Which means we still do not know how much more transmissible if at all, and how much more lethal it is, if at all. There are many unanswered questions with regards to the JN.1 variant."

JN.1 sub variant: WHO calls for strengthening Covid-19 surveillance

WHO has classified JN.1 as a variant of interest following its rapid global spread.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged countries in South-East Asia to strengthen surveillance in view of the increasing cases of respiratory diseases, including due to COVID-19 and its new sub-variant JN.1, and influenza.
The WHO also urged people to take protective measures.
"The COVID-19 virus continues to evolve, change, and circulate in all countries globally. While current evidence suggests the additional public health risk posed by JN.1 is low, we must continue to track the evolution of these viruses to tailor our response.
"For this, countries must strengthen surveillance and sequencing, and ensure sharing of data," said Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, regional director, WHO South-East Asia.
WHO has classified JN.1 as a variant of interest following its rapid global spread. In recent weeks, JN.1 was reported in multiple countries, and its prevalence has been rapidly increasing globally.
Considering the limited available evidence, the additional public health risk posed by JN.1 is currently evaluated as low at the global level, Singh said.
It is anticipated that this variant may cause an increase in COVID-19 cases amid surge of infections of other viral and bacterial infections, especially in countries entering the winter season.
"As people travel and gather for festivities during the holiday season, spending a lot of time together indoors where poor ventilation facilitates transmission of viruses that cause respiratory diseases, they must take protective measures and seek timely clinical care when unwell," said Dr Khetrapal Singh.
The regional director also emphasised on the importance of vaccination against COVID-19 and influenza, especially for people at high risk.
"All WHO-approved COVID-19 vaccines continue to protect against severe diseases and deaths from all variants including JN.1," she said.
In May, following sustained decline in the trajectory of COVID-19 cases, hospitalisations and deaths, and high levels of population immunity to SARS-CoV2, WHO declared that COVID-19 no longer constituted a public health emergency of international concern.
While considerable progress has been made in establishing and strengthening a global system to detect and rapidly assess risks posed by SARS-CoV2, testing and reporting of COVID-19 cases has decreased.
With COVID-19 continuing to circulate at high levels globally, countries must strengthen surveillance, sequencing, and reporting to effectively manage respiratory diseases and to protect people's health, the regional director said.
