A significant milestone in the operationalisation of Noida International Airport was achieved on Friday, as a calibration flight by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) successfully landed at the airport, officials said.
This crucial test, conducted before any new airport becomes operational, verifies the accuracy of the airport's navigation and communication systems, according to a statement issued by the Uttar Pradesh government.
"The successful completion of the calibration flight marks a major step forward for Jewar airport, bringing it closer to meeting international aviation safety standards and expediting the process of securing operational clearance," it read.

A calibration flight, according to officials, is a specialised test operation designed to ensure that the airport's Instrument Landing System (ILS), radar, and air navigation equipment function in accordance with international safety standards.
During the exercise, specially equipped aircraft fly at varying altitudes and angles to assess the strength, stability, and precision of signals transmitted by ground systems. The process involves flight inspectors, technical engineers, and air traffic control (ATC) specialists working in coordination, the statement said.
"AAI's calibration aircraft are fitted with advanced measurement instruments that capture real-time data during the flight. This data is meticulously analysed to identify and correct any technical deviations, ensuring the highest level of system accuracy," it said.
The first phase of the greenfield Noida International Airport is expected to be inaugurated soon. Its date, however, remains unannounced.
In the first phase, the airport will cover over 1,334 hectares of land with one runway, one terminal building, and a passenger capacity of 12 million annually, according to officials.
The project would eventually be completed in four different phases and ultimately have five runways and a passenger capacity of 300 million annually, they added.
The airport is being developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, for the state government in a public-private partnership model.

On a momentous Monday, an IndiGo aircraft, manned by a full crew and accompanied by experts from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), performed the pivotal trial, marking a crucial advance in the airport's development strategy.
The trial was not just a symbolic gesture but a thorough technical assessment, encompassing various aspects of aviation operations. The centerpiece of the exercise involved takeoff and landing maneuvers on the newly constructed runway. The importance of such validation flights&mdash;or proving flights&mdash;cannot be overstated. They are integral to the certification lattice, serving as a means to ensure compliance with stringent safety, operational, and regulatory standards.
During these flights, the airport's ability to handle real-world scenarios is put to the test, assessing whether its infrastructure, procedures, and systems align seamlessly with the guidelines laid down by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). These simulations play a critical role in ascertaining the preparedness for handling commercial flights and ensuring passenger safety and operational efficiency.
Following the meticulous collection of data during the exercise, the subsequent review by the DGCA will determine the way forward. Approved data will pave the way for the airport authorities to apply for an aerodrome license, an indispensable step before the airport can fully commence operations and serve as a lynchpin in India's aviation sector.
The validation phase is programmed to run between November 30 and December 15, reflecting a strategically planned schedule moving forward. This follows the airport's achievement in October when critical milestones were accomplished with the successful calibration of its Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) systems. These sophisticated systems are crucial for ensuring aircraft can land safely, especially under challenging conditions, underscoring the airport's commitment to safety and technological excellence.
As NIAL progresses, officials reported that the project&rsquo;s first phase has achieved 85% completion. The impressive 3.9 km runway is already operational, signaling readiness to accommodate various aircraft types. Meanwhile, the terminal building is fast approaching the final stages of construction. This structure is envisaged to offer an array of world-class amenities, promising a seamless experience for travelers and setting new benchmarks in airport infrastructure.
