In a move to give a big relief to domestic carriers, the Maharashtra government has announced a reduction in the value added tax levied on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to 18 per cent from 25 per cent.&nbsp;
The new rate will be applicable in Mumbai, Pune and Raigad districts, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced in his budget speech. Maharashtra levies 4 per cent VAT on ATF in districts except Mumbai and Pune. According to reports, the new rate could help in reducing fuel expenses for airlines as they rework their fueling uplift plans but it is not expected to add to many new flights as both Mumbai and Pune airports are constrained for slots. Fuel costs account for 30-40 per cent of the airlines' expenses.&nbsp;The issue of reduction in Value-Added Tax (VAT) on ATF was taken up with states/Union Territories levying high VATs on ATF and many of them reduced the tax on aviation fuel in the last many months.
To ensure financial viability in the sector, Union aviation minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia has been asking states to cut VAT on ATF.&nbsp;
"In a scenario of high fuel prices, this step will prove to be a catalyst in our efforts to ramp up air connectivity. With this, Maharashtra joins the league of total 19 States/UTs that have rationalised VAT rates in the last 1.5 years. Alongside enhanced connectivity for Mumbai, Pune &amp; Raigad, this will also make travel more affordable, and boost growth", said Scindia in a tweet.&nbsp;

Jet fuel (ATF) price was, on Wednesday, cut by 4 per cent, reflecting softening international oil prices but petrol and diesel rates remain unchanged for the eleventh consecutive month.&nbsp;
Petrol diesel prices were last changed on May 22 when the government cut excise duty.&nbsp;
Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) price was reduced by ₹4,606 per kilolitre, or 4.09 per cent, to ₹107,750.27 per kl in the national capital, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers.&nbsp; The reduction is followed by an increase in the price of aviation turbine fuel(ATF) in February to ₹1,12,356.77 per kl in the national capital.
For airlines, fuel constitutes 40% of total operating cost. But the big question is, will this be passed on to consumers resulting in a reduction in air ticket prices?&nbsp;

Prior to that, the rates were hiked by the steepest ever 16% to catapult rates to an all-time.

Meanwhile, petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged for the 25th straight day after rising by a record Rs 10 per litre each. While jet fuel prices are revised on the 1st and 16th of every month, petrol and diesel rates are revised daily based on equivalent rates in the international market. The increase in ATF price comes on the back of the steepest ever hike of 18.3 per cent (Rs 17,135.63 per kl) effected on March 16 and a 2 per cent (Rs 2,258.54 per kl) increase on April 1. Prices were increased by a marginal 0.2 per cent on April 16.
ATF in Mumbai now costs Rs 1,15,617.24 per kl, while it is priced at Rs 1,21,430.48 in Kolkata and Rs 1,20,728.03 in Chennai.
Rates differ from State to State, depending on the incidence of local taxation.
