BBC documentary screening at Jamia: SFI claims 70 students detained

Delhi Police has detained over 70 students who were gathered at Jamia Millia Islamia to protest against the detention of four activists over the proposed screening of a BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Students' Federation of India said.

The Left-backed SFI's Jamia unit has released a poster informing that the documentary would be screened at the MCRC lawn gate 8 at 6 pm.

Delhi Police has detained over 70 students who were gathered at Jamia Millia Islamia to protest against the detention of four activists over the proposed screening of a BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Students' Federation of India said.
There was no immediate response from the police.
Heavy deployment of police personnel was seen outside the campus where the students were gathered. Personnel from the Rapid Action Force were deployed at the gate.
Pritish Menon, secretary of the Students' Federation of India's (SFI) Delhi state committee, said the police detained the protestors who had gathered there.
"We were about to begin the demonstration but they were detained before that. They were taken to the police station," Menon told PTI.

Delhi Police on Wednesday said they detained four students after the SFI announced its plan to screen the controversial documentary on the campus.
The university administration said the screening would not be allowed and that they were taking all measures to prevent people and organisations with a "vested interest to destroy the peaceful academic atmosphere of the university".
The varsity administration also issued a statement, saying no permission had been sought for the screening of the documentary and it would not be allowed.
"It has come to the knowledge of the university administration that some students belonging to a political organisation have circulated a poster about screening of a controversial documentary film on the university campus today," it said in the statement.
The university had earlier issued a memorandum/circular reiterating that no meeting/gathering of students or screening of any film shall be allowed on the campus without permission from the competent authority.
It said strict disciplinary action shall be taken against organisers in case of any violation.
"The university is taking all possible measures to prevent people/organisations having a vested interest to destroy the peaceful academic atmosphere of the university," it said.
The SFI's attempt to screen the documentary at the Jamia campus comes a day after a similar event was organised at Jawaharlal Nehru University during which students claimed that power and Internet were suspended and stones hurled at them.&nbsp;

The Delhi Police Wednesday said they have detained four students after the Left-affiliated Students' Federation of India (SFI) announced plan to screen a controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Jamia Millia Islamia campus.
The university administration said the screening will not be allowed and that they are taking all measures to prevent people and organisations with a "vested interest to destroy the peaceful academic atmosphere of the university".
A Delhi Police official said four SFI members were detained, just hours before the screening planned for 6 pm by the student body.
The SFI's Jamia unit has released a poster informing the documentary will be screened at 6 pm at the MCRC lawn gate no 8.
The SFI issued a statement following the detention.
"In an atrocious manner, Azeez, a student of Jamia Milia Islamia and SFI Jamia Unit Secretary; Nivedya, a Jamia Student and SFI South Delhi Area Vice President; Abhiram and Tejas, both Jamia students and SFI Unit members have been detained by the Delhi Police prior to the screening of the documentary," the SFI said.
"The SFI Jamia Unit had decided to screen the BBC documentary today on the campus," it added.

The university administration also issued a statement, saying no permission has been sought for the screening of the documentary and it will not be allowed.

Jamia Millia Islamia has banned the entry of its three former students, including the 2020 riots accused Safoora Zargar, on its campus for "agitating" in the university over an "irrelevant and objectionable" issue. Signed by the chief proctor, the orders dated September 14 said the competent authority has approved a campus ban on ex-students for maintaining a peaceful academic environment.
An activist and scholar, Zargar made headlines due to her alleged involvement in the anti-CAA protests after the Citizenship Amendment Act was passed by the Parliament in December 2019.
Besides Zargar, the orders have been issued against two more ex-students of Jamia Millia Islamia, it said.
While the language in the orders against the two former students is similar, the notification against Zargar mentions her involvement in organising agitations, protests and marches on the campus "against the irrelevant and objectionable issues to disturb the peaceful academic environment".
"She is instigating innocent students of the University and trying to use the University platform for her malafide political agenda along with some other students," the order read.
It further said that Safoora is hampering the normal functioning of the institution.
The order has come days after the university cancelled the admission of scholar Zargar due to "unsatisfactory" progress in her thesis work.
Zargar has refused to comment on the campus ban.
She along with several other students has been staging protests against the cancellation of her admission.
"Safoora Zargar is an ex-student of M. Phil, Dept. of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences. She is one of the accused of conspiracy with other persons to instigate and start riots in northeast Delhi on 23.02.2020. She was booked under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), 1967 by Delhi Police..." the order stated.
"Her name was removed from M. Phil because of non-submission of M. Phil dissertation within the given period despite giving several chances and she is not a student of Jamia Millia Islamia," it added.
The notices issued against two former students stated that they were at the forefront of the unauthorised gatherings of students on the campus several times including one which took place in the University's Central Canteen on August 30. They have been found involved in organising agitations, protests and marches on the campus despite not being JMI's students, the university added.

These entities either did not apply for renewal of their FCRA licence or the Union Home Ministry rejected their applications, officials said.
According to the official website related to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, among organisations and entities whose registration under the FCRA ceased or validity expired include the Indira Gandhi National Centre For Arts, Indian Institute Of Public Administration, Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Foundation, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Delhi College of Engineering and Oxfam India.
The FCRA registration is mandatory for any association and NGO to receive foreign funding.
There were 22,762 FCRA-registered NGOs till Friday. On Saturday, it came down to 16,829 as 5,933 NGOs ceased to operate.

The Gurugram police have filed an FIR against a teenager for allegedly making provocative comments at a mahapanchayat held in Pataudi on July 4.
The teenager had allegedly opened fire at a group of anti-CAA protesters in Jamia in Delhi last year also.
The FIR has been registered based on a complaint submitted by a resident of Jamalpur village in Gurugram.&nbsp;
In his speech at the mahapanchayat, the teenager allegedly called for attacks on the Muslim community.
