Jama Masjid's Shahi Imam has agreed to withdraw the order restricting entry of women in the mosque, after Delhi LG V K Saxena spoke to him and requested him to take back the decree. 

The mosque had banned entry of unaccompanied girls claiming that they were engaging in what it called improper acts like waiting for boys, making videos and dancing.&nbsp;

Jama Masjid's Shahi Imam has agreed to withdraw the order restricting entry of women in the mosque, after Delhi LG V K Saxena spoke to him and requested him to take back the decree, Raj Niwas sources said on Thursday.
They added that Imam Bukhari agreed to revoke the order, on the condition that visitors respect and maintain the sanctity of the mosque.

While Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal termed it a violation of women's rights and said she was issuing a notice, new agency PTI's sources in the National Commission for Women said it has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and is deciding on the action to be taken.
Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari said the decision was taken after some "incidents" were reported on the premises of the heritage structure.
"Jama Masjid is a place of worship and people are welcome for that. But girls coming alone and waiting for their dates... this is not what this place is meant for. The restriction is on that," Bukhari told PTI.
"Any such place, be it a mosque, temple or gurudwara is a place of worship (ibadat ki jagah hai) and there is no restriction on anyone coming for that purpose. Just today, a group of 20-25 girls visited and they were allowed to enter," Bukhari added.
In the past, music video shoots by visitors were prohibited. An old board outside the entry gate facing the busy Matia Mahal area bears the message: "Music video shoot is strictly prohibited inside the mosque".

DCW chief Swati Maliwal on Twitter said, "It is completely wrong to ban the entry of women in Jama Masjid. The kind of rights a man has to praying, women also have the same rights." "I am issuing a notice to imam of Jama Masjid. Nobody has the right to ban entry of women in this way," she tweeted. In a video, the panel's chief said that it was a "shameful" and "unconsitutional" act.
The panel, in its notice, has sought details on the reasons for prohibiting the entry of women and girls "without male companions" in the Jama Masjid and the person responsible for restricting the entry of women and girls.
"If the decision was taken in a meeting, please provide a copy of minutes of the meeting. Steps taken by authorities now for removing the restriction imposed on entry of women and girls," it said.
The DCW also has sought a detailed action taken report in the matter by November 28.
Women rights activists hit out at the mosque's administration, saying it takes women centuries back.
Ranjana Kumari, an activist, said this is completely unacceptable. "What kind of 10th century mindset is this. We are a democratic country how can they do this. How can they bar women," she told PTI.
"This diktat takes us 100 years back. This is not just regressive but shows what kind of mindset these religious groups have about girls. It is extremely unfortunate," Yogita Bhayana , another women rights activist, said.
The ban on entry of women in religious places had in the past also led to massive outrage triggering debates on equal rights to worship.
In 2018, a five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court had by a majority 4:1 verdict, allowed girls and women of all ages to visit the Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala in Kerala, saying discrimination on physiological grounds was violative of the fundamental rights as enshrined in the Constitution such as the right to equality.
In the following year, when the state government tried to implement the apex court order there was a huge protest against the same and various organisations also moved pleas in the top court seeking a review of its 2018 decision.
Thereafter, in November 2019, a five-judge Constitution bench of the top court by a 3:2 majority verdict had referred the pleas seeking a review of its 2018 judgment to a seven-judge bench, along with other contentious issues of alleged discrimination against Muslim and Parsi women.
The Sabarimala temple had restricted the entry of women belonging to the age group of 10-50 as part of its age-old tradition.&nbsp;

Accused Anwaruddin, a resident of Matia Mahal in the Jama Masjid area, has been bound down under Section 41A (police may arrest without warrant) of the CrPC, police said.

The historic Jama Masjid in the walled city area lost the finial of its main dome and witnessed some stones getting loose and falling overhead as it weathered a rainstorm Monday evening.
Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari said that two people were injured by stones which fell from minarets and other parts of the mosque.
"The Kalas (finial) of the main dome fell off. It needs urgent repair to prevent further damages. Some stones of the mosque structure also loosened and fell off. I will write to the Prime Minister for immediate repair of the mosque roping in Archaeological Survey of India," Bukhari told PTI.
Delhi Waqf Board officials said a team was sent to Jama Masjid for inspection and assessment of the damage.
"The finial weighs around 300 Kgs. It’s a difficult task to fix it back and undertake the repairs. We will take a decision after the damage is fully assessed," said a Waqf Board official.
In June last year also, some stone pieces from the southern minaret of Jama Masjid had fallen after a storm. In 2020 too, the mosque had suffered damage due to tremors the city.
A few pieces of stones had fallen off from minaret near gate number 3 of the mosque premises, its caretakers said.
Two persons were killed and several injured as heavy rains accompanied by strong winds battered the national capital on Monday evening, uprooting hundreds of trees, disrupting road and air traffic and damaging vehicles and buildings, including the iconic Jama Masjid.
Waterlogging and power outages were also reported in some areas. Police and fire brigade personnel responded to scores of rescue calls as trees fell on vehicles and passersby and incidents of wall collapse occurred, while civic bodies were busy clearing roads. Delhi recorded 17.8 mm of rainfall till 5.30 PM, according to the weather department.
A 50-year-old man died in the Jama Masjid area in centra Delhi after a portion of a balcony of a neighbouring house fell on him during the strong winds when he was standing outside his residence.
The victim, identified as Kailash, was declared brought dead at Sanjeevan hospital in Daryaganj, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shweta Chauhan said. In the Angoori Bagh area of North Delhi, a 65-year-old homeless man identified as Basir Baba died after a Peepal tree fell on him, the police said.
In another instance, three members of a family including a one-year-old child were rescued after a Neem tree fell on a Creta car near Kabootar Market in Chandni Chowk.

According to police, 294 calls about fallen trees were received till 8 pm on Monday Eight calls of house collapse were reported by Delhi Fire Police.
Commuters had a difficult time as traffic snarls were reported near ITO, AIIMS flyover, and DND. At least five flights were also diverted and 70 were delayed at the Delhi airport due to the thunderstorm, officials said.
The delayed flights included at least 40 departures, they said.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena visited some of the affected places.
"Distressed by the sight of uprooted trees, fallen branches and waterlogging at places after the early evening storm... Instructed officials to take immediate steps to remove debris and clear the roads immediately so as to mitigate the inconvenience to people," he tweeted.
Residents posted videos of cars shaking in the gusty winds and of fallen trees. In many places, vehicles were damaged after the trees fell on them owing to strong winds and rain.  West Delhi BJP MP Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma's car was also damaged after the branches of a tree fell on the vehicle parked at his official residence at Windsor Place.  "Till 7.15 PM, a total of 101 complaints were received about uprooted trees and broken branches. Work is on to clear the areas where such incidents have been witnessed. Several areas, including Bhagwan Das Road, Connaught Place, SP Marg, have already been cleared," a senior NDMC official said.
A red Volkswagen car was damaged after a piece of metal pierced its windshield while another car was reported trapped under an uprooted tree at Connaught Place.
Several trees were also uprooted inside the Jamia Millia Islamia where the walls of a building were also damaged, officials said.
According to varsity officials, many solar panels installed in the administrative block were blown away by the winds.
The walls of Zakir Husain Memorial suffered damage due to the heavy downpour. Almost 200-300 trees would have suffered damage across the campus. The road outside the varsity campus witnessed traffic snarls.
The heavy rains and wind also damaged flags installed by the Delhi government at various locations.  Trees were also uprooted on the Bhai Vir Singh Marg in the Gole Market area near the Nepal Embassy and also near the Parliament Street police station leading to obstruction in traffic.  The Kasturba Gandhi Marg was completely closed for vehicular movement. There were also reports of poles damaging vehicles in the South Extension market while a Delhi Traffic Police booth at Vijay Chowk was damaged owing to strong winds.  Social media users tagged Delhi Traffic Police by sharing photos of various locations where trees had been uprooted.  The Delhi Police also assured people that their issues were being taken care of.  The wind was so strong that an air conditioners fell off a building on the Parliament Street, causing damage to cars and auto-rickshaws.

After seeing traffic on reaching Ashoka Road where trees had fallen, I took several other routes to finally reach Jai Singh Marg but have been stuck for the last 1.30 hours. Every route I took, I saw traffic jams," said  Another commuter Vinay Yadav said he was stuck at the Jai Singh Marg for more than two hours.
"I came from Rajender Palace area and since trees have fallen, we are stuck in traffic. I need to reach home at Sarita Vihar. With this traffic, I don't think I would reach home anytime soon," Kumar said.
