Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X, "In view of the unprecedented announcements from Washington DC, there is now a need, more than ever before, for -- the prime minister to chair an all-party meeting and take political parties into confidence."
There is also now a need, more than ever before, for a special session of Parliament to discuss the events of the last 18 days, beginning with the brutal Pahalgam terror attack and the way forward, and to demonstrate a collective resolve, he said.
The directors general of military operations of India and Pakistan have agreed to stop all firings and military action on land, air and sea with effect from 5 pm, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has announced.

The brief announcement came shortly after US President Donald Trump said India and Pakistan had agreed to a "full and immediate" ceasefire after talks mediated by the US.
The US-brokered ceasefire came hours after the militaries of India and Pakistan attacked each other's facilities, dangerously escalating the standoff.

The Congress on Friday expressed concern over the American Immigration Lawyers Association's claim that out of the 327 visa revocation cases of international students collected by it so far, 50% are Indians, and asked whether External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will take up the issue with his US counterpart.&nbsp;

"Out of the 327 visa revocation cases of international students collected by the organisation so far, 50% are Indians. The reasons for revocation are random and unclear. There is growing fear and apprehension," Ramesh said.
"Will the External Affairs Minister take note and raise the concern with his US counterpart? Ramesh said and tagged Jaishankar.
"The Department of State (DOS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are aggressively targeting international students, including those without a history of protest, for visa revocation, termination of their status, and removal," the American Immigration Lawyers Association statement said.
AILA collected 327 reports of visa revocations and Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) terminations from attorneys, students, and university employees, it said.
"Of these reports - 50 percent of these students were from India, followed by 14 percent from China. Other significant countries represented in this data include South Korea, Nepal, and Bangladesh," the statement said.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh took to X to remind Modi of his past comments on the rupee's value when he first assumed office. Ramesh wrote, &ldquo;When Mr. Narendra Modi took over as PM, he was about to turn 64, and the rupee was at 58.58 to the dollar. The rupee&rsquo;s significant drop occurred in the midst of the foreign exchange session on January 13, with the currency opening at 86.12. It reached a historic low of 86.59 before slightly recovering to 86.50 against the dollar.

The Congress on Thursday hit out at Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar for his criticism of Rahul Gandhi's remarks in the UK, saying that the Rajya Sabha chairman is an umpire and cannot be a cheerleader for any ruling dispensation.
The Congress' reaction came after Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar attacked Gandhi for his comments regarding microphones being turned off in Parliament, and said he would be on the "wrong side" of the Constitution if he stayed silent on the issue.
In a statement, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh noted that at an event on Thursday to mark the launch of a book, the vice president made certain remarks on Rahul Gandhi's speech delivered in the United Kingdom. &nbsp;"There are certain offices which require us to shed our prejudices, our party allegiances and compel us to rid ourselves of whatever propaganda we may have imbibed along the way.

The vice president's statement on Gandhi, therefore, was surprising to say the least, he said.

He said Rahul Gandhi has not said anything abroad that he has not said several times here. &nbsp;"And unlike certain other individuals, his stand does not vary depending on where he sits," Ramesh said.
The Congress leader argued that Gandhi's statement was factual and representative of the reality on the ground. &nbsp;
"Over the last two weeks, more than twelve Members of Parliament belonging to Opposition Parties have been served with Breach of Privilege Notices for protesting the suppression of their voices in Parliament on an issue that is inconvenient to the ruling regime," he said.
&nbsp;Over the last eight years, channels and newspapers have been blacked out, raided, and intimidated to the point that the only voice that is carried is that of the government, he alleged.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday said the Bharat Jodo Yatra has ensured that the Congress is now setting the political narrative in the country and the BJP has been made to play on a pitch prepared by his party.
In an interview with PTI on the yatra completing 100 days, Ramesh also said that Rahul Gandhi is trying to sharpen the ideological basis of the Congress and is working along with the party's elected president, Mallikarjun Kharge, as a 'jugalbandi' (together).
Asked whether the party could undertake another such yatra next year, Ramesh said, "I would certainly love to participate in a Porbandar (Gujarat) to Parshuram Kund (Arunachal Pradesh) Yatra but whether we can do it next year and how we can do it next year, it has to be discussed and debated in appropriate party forums." The Congress general secretary in-charge communications asserted that through the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Gandhi has given a new direction to the political discourse and the Congress has set the narrative for the last 100 days.

He said the yatra has had an "electrifying internal effect" on the organisation as well as on the external world of Indian politics.
Ramesh claimed that due to the yatra, the BJP is on the "back foot, disturbed and nervous".
"I think we have succeeded in changing the terms of the debate. The narrative is on our pitch now. We are playing cricket against the BJP on a pitch that is prepared by us, we are not playing cricket against the BJP on a pitch prepared by them, that is the difference," he said.
Asked if Rahul Gandhi was now the conscience-keeper of the party, Ramesh said that's a strong word and one does not emerge as a conscience keeper through just one yatra.

Frantic appeals for Oxygen by the Embassy of the Philippines, the New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi on Sunday kicked up a diplomatic row.
The embassies tweeted appeals to the youth wing of the opposition Congress for medical oxygen amid the frightening Covid-19 crisis that has crippled the&nbsp;healthcare system.
The New Zealand mission was quick to delete the tweet. The Congress, however, live-tweeted its delivery of the medical oxygen, adding that the patient inside was "critically ill" and also shared photos on social media.
A bitter exchange between senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar followed with the Ministry of External Affairs advising foreign missions "not to hoard essential supplies, including oxygen"

Parl session: Oppn seeks to corner govt over economy, border row

As the Parliament is set to hold Monsoon session, the Congress and other opposition parties are set to oppose four of the 11 legislations the government proposes to bring in this Parliament session in place of ordinances issued earlier and expects Prime Minister&nbsp;Narendra Modi&nbsp;to reply to their concerns.&nbsp;Congress leader Jairam Ramesh Sunday said the Congress was in touch with other like-minded parties and had decided to oppose the three agriculture-related legislations and the amendment to the Banking Regulation Act in both houses.&nbsp;Like-minded opposition parties have decided to come up with a joint strategy to take on the government on important issues such as handling of the pandemic, the state of the economy and the tense situation at the&nbsp;China&nbsp;border in Ladakh.&nbsp;
