Preparations for Lord Jagannath's Bahuda Yatra are underway in Puri after the Hera Panchami rituals, with chariots set to turn for the return journey on July 5. Devotees continue to have smooth darshan of the deities at Shree Gundicha Temple.

The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) with the help of Puri district administration and police on Wednesday started preparations for the 'Bahuda Yatra' (return car festival) of Lord Jagannath a day after the completion of 'Hera Panchami' rituals, an official said.
The devotees are having a smooth 'darshan' of the sibling deities - Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath - at Shree Gundicha Temple for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, the SJTA official said.
Preparations are on to turn the chariots southwards (Dakhina Moda) for the 'Bahuda Yatra' on July 5, he said.
The three majestic chariots - Taladwaj (Lord Balabhadra), Darpadalan (Devi Subhadra) and Nandighosh (Lord Jagannath) are now parked at 'Saradhabali' (the sacred sand bed) in front of Shree Gundicha Temple, considered as the birthplace of the deities. They will be turned around for the return car festival, the official said.
He said that on-duty police personnel and a handful of servitors will drag the chariot and keep them at the proper place before they are pulled to the 12th-century shrine during Bahuda Yatra on July 5. "Today, after the 'Sakaladhupa' (morning food) ritual, the chariot will be pulled after the 'Agyanmala' (permission garland) come from the deities the chariots would take 'Dakhina Moda'. Three 'Agnya Mala' (garlands) have meanwhile reached the chariots. It gives me immense satisfaction to be part of the Rath Yatra rituals," said Madhav Pujapanda, who carried the 'Agnya Mala' from Shree Gundicha Temple to chariots.
In the series, first, the Devadalan chariot of Devi Subhadra will be pulled, followed by the Taladhwaja chariot of Lord Balabhadra and finally the Nandighosh chariot of Jagannath to reach in front of the 'Nakachana Dwara' for forward pulling on July 5th.
According to mythology, the three-day 'Rasalila' (fun game) will begin at Shree Gundicha Temple on Wednesday. Lord Jagannath would perform 'Rasalila' with 'Gopis' (women followers of Lord Krishna).
Meanwhile, the Hera Panchami ritual was observed on Tuesday night when Lord Jagannath's consort Maa Laxmi reached Shree Gundicha Temple in anger and humiliation for not being taken on Rath Yatra. Maa Laxmi was angry because Lord Jagannath took his brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra in Rath Yatra and not her.
In anger, Maa Laxmi broke a portion of Nandighosh chariot of Lord Jagannath as per the ritual and returned to the main temple in a ceremonial procession.

A day after three people were killed in a stampede near Shree Gundicha temple in Odisha's Puri, the Congress on Monday demanded that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi and his deputy resign, taking responsibility for the tragedy, and also called for a judicial inquiry.
Alleging that the BJP prioritised billionaire Gautam Adani, who attended the Rath Yatra, over the people, the opposition party said the state government has turned Odisha&rsquo;s holiest festival into a private event for "billionaires, cronies, and camera crews, at the cost of ordinary devotees".
There was no immediate reaction to the allegations from the Odisha government or Adani.
Addressing a press conference at the Congress' Indira Bhawan headquarters in Delhi, Congress MP Saptagiri Ulaka and party leader Arabinda Das said the Rath Yatra is not merely an event but is a 1,200-year-old living tradition.
"During Rath Yatra, the chariots themselves become mobile temples sanctifying the land. It is a time when the Lord of the Universe descends from His pedestal to mingle with devotees, breaking all barriers of caste and creed in an overwhelming display of equality and grace," Ulaka said.
Never in living memory have devotees seen the Lord&rsquo;s chariot dishonoured by delay or negligence, he said.
"A festival of such importance in people&rsquo;s lives has been wrecked by the BJP government. Whatever happened in Puri reveals the true nature of the BJP. For them, worshipping God is less important; what matters more is turning it into an event for political benefit," he alleged.
"The Mohan Majhi-led BJP government had claimed they would make history with a 'flawless and grand' Rath Yatra. And yes, they have made history by reducing the sacred Rath Yatra of Mahaprabhu Jagannath into a stage-managed political tamasha that ended in a stampede, sorrow, and disgrace. This is not mismanagement. This is desecration," Ulaka claimed.
The Nandighosha chariot of Mahaprabhu Jagannath could not move beyond a few token pahundi lengths even by 7:30 PM, Ulaka and Das alleged, adding that his unprecedented breakdown turned hope into heartbreak for lakhs of devotees.
"Three devotees lost their lives in a stampede near Saradhabali. Hundreds more were injured. Many, including a woman journalist, were subjected to brutal police action, even as VIPs roamed freely inside restricted cordons," they alleged.
The Law Minister, Prithviraj Harichandan, further insulted the devotees by dismissing the tragedy, saying "nothing untoward has happened", Ulaka said. If three deaths and hundreds of injuries are not &ldquo;untoward,&rdquo; then what is, he asked.
"This government has not just mismanaged, it has insulted the Odia people and shamed our cultural pride," he said.
Making demands on behalf of the Congress, Ulaka said there should be full disclosure of the number of deaths so that families can identify their loved ones and perform their last rites with dignity.
"Rs 50 lakh compensation be given to the families of the deceased and Rs 25 lakh to the critically injured," he said.
He also called for the immediate resignation of the chief minister, deputy CM and the law minister, "not just for failing to protect lives, but for violating the sanctity of Mahaprabhu's Yatra".
Ulaka also demanded that a court-monitored judicial inquiry, led by the sitting District Judge of Puri should be launched within 10 days of Niladri Bije, the return of the deities to the main temple, marking the conclusion of the Rath Yatra.
"We call upon the people of Odisha to stand up for Mahaprabhu Jagannath. This Yatra is not for the BJP. It is not for the VIPs. It is for all of us," the two Congress leaders said.
Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala suggested measures like country-wide standard protocols for crowd management and the setting up of crowd safety task force by states, as he claimed that some "unpardonable glaring failures" of the BJP government in Odisha stand out in the incident.
Meanwhile, the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) also demanded the resignations of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy CM Pravati Parida and Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, holding them accountable for the stampede in Puri.
A fact-finding OPCC team led by former party president Prasad Harichandan visited the holy town on Sunday to look into the stampede incident.
The team visited the spot and met the injured persons being treated at the district headquarters hospital.
"The team was shocked and saddened to learn that two critically injured patients- whose legs were reportedly completely crushed- had been discharged without proper treatment," the party said in a statement.
The team alleged that the government was making all efforts to downplay the incident while turning a blind eye to the treatment of the injured devotees, it said.
Three persons, including two women, were killed and over 50 others injured in the stampede near Shree Gundicha Temple in Odisha&rsquo;s Puri early Sunday during a ceremony related to the ongoing Rath Yatra festivities, officials said.
The incident occurred at around 4.20 am when thousands of devotees had gathered near the chariots parked in front of the temple, they said. The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital where the condition of six people is stated to be critical.
The Gundicha Temple, located around 3 km from the 12th-century shrine, is the aunt's house of Lord Jagannath and his siblings Subhadra and Balabhadra.

The three chariots are now ready to roll down the Grand Road here as Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath have ascended their respective chariots after over two-hour long ceremonial 'Pahandi' ritual here on Friday.
The word 'Pahandi' comes from the Sanskrit word 'Padamundanam' which means taking slow steps movement by spreading feet. As per tradition, the 'Pahandi' was carried in 'Dhadi' (line) where the three wooden idols were carried to the chariots from the 12th century temple. The pahandi of the trinity began with Chakraraj Sudarshan, followed by Lord Balabhdra, Devi Subhadra and finally Lord Jagannath.
Though the Pahandi ritual was earlier scheduled to begin at 9.30 am, it started one hour late and the ritual was completed as per plan. The trinity was now seated on their respective chariots parked in front of the Lion's Gate of the temple for journey to Shree Gundicha Temple, about 2.6 kilometre from the 12th-century shrine.
With the beating of gongs, and blowing of conches and cymbals, Chakraraj Sudarshan was first to be carried out from the main temple and seated at the 'Darpadalan' chariot of Devi Subhadra. Shree Sudarshan is the wheel weapon of Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped in the form of Lord Jagannath in Puri, said Pandit Suryanaray Rathsharma.
Shree Sudarshan was followed by Lord Balabhadra, the elder brother of Lord Jagannath. Lord Balabhadra is seated on his 'Taladhwaja' chariot. Goddess Subhadra, the sister of Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra, was being brought to her 'Darpadalan' chariot in a special procession called 'Sunya Pahandi' (the Goddess looking at the sky while being carried to the chariot) by servitors.
When finally Lord Jagannath came out of the temple, emotions spilled over the Grand Road as devotees raised their hands shouting 'Jai Jagannath'. Odissi dancers, folk artists, music players and many other groups drawn from different parts of the state compete among themselves to perform before the 'Kalia Thakura' (Black colour Lord Jagannath).
"My life will be fulfilled if the Lord graced to throw a look at me," said Maitree Maheswari, an Odissi dancer.
The Shankaracharya of Govardhan Peeth, Swami Nischalananda Saraswati along with his selected disciples visited three chariots after the deities ascended on them. The 81-year-old seer came near the chariots in a wheel chair. The Shankaracharya's visit is also part of the Rath Yatra rituals.
Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Puri MP Sambit Patra, Odisha ministers and many others witnessed the ceremonial Pahandi, one of the major attraction of Rath Yatra here in Puri.
Ratha Yatra, is held on the second day of the Odia month of 'Ashadha Shukla Tithi' (bright fortnight) every year, is the only occasion when the sibling deities come out of the temple after descending from the 'Ratna Sinhasana', the bejewelled throne, through 22 steps known as 'Baisi Pahacha' through the Lion's Gate in an elaborate royal ritual called 'Pahandi'.
As per the tradition 'Chhera pahanra' (sweeping of chariots) would be performed by Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb at 3.30 pm before pulling of chariots at 4 pm as per the programme.
Meanwhile, lakhs of devotees have already thronged the pilgrim town of Puri to witness the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath and his siblings on Friday.
The festival is being held amid unprecedented security arrangements with deployment of around 10,000 personnel of Odisha police, central armed police force, NSG and others. "We have made all possible arrangements for smooth conduct of Rath Yatra," DGP Y B Khurania told reporters, adding that over 275 AI-enabled CCTV cameras are keeping watch on the crowd.
ADGP (Law and Order) Sanjay Kumar said that the arrangements are made keeping in view some information following the Pahalgam terror attack. Apart from Odisha police, eight companies of central armed police force including 3 teams of RAF, have been deployed.
"Several central government agencies are collaborating with Odisha Police, including NSG snipers, Coast Guard drones, and anti-drone systems. Canine teams and Odisha's anti-sabotage units are also engaged in duty here," he said.&nbsp;

Lakhs of devotees have thronged the seaside pilgrim town of Puri for Lord Jagannath's annual Ratha Yatra on Friday, for which the Odisha government has made elaborate arrangements, officials said.
About one lakh people have reached Puri by Thursday evening, and the number has increased manifold this morning, police sources said.
Lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad are expected to participate in the event, they said.
&ldquo;By the grace of Mahaprabhu (Lord Jagannath), we are fully prepared to conduct a smooth Rath Yatra on Friday. We are getting complete support and cooperation from the servitors. All arrangements are in place to make the mega event successful,&rdquo; Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee said.
The town is heavily fortified with the deployment of approximately 10,000 security personnel, including eight companies of Central Armed Police Forces.
Odisha DGP Y B Khurania said that for the first time, an Integrated Command and Control Centre has been opened in Puri to monitor the entire festival from close quarters.
Over 275 AI-enabled CCTV cameras have been installed across Puri and on the roads to Konark, 35 km away and famous for the 13th-century Sun Temple, for surveillance.
This apart, the DGP said that the National Security Guard (NSG) snipers will take positions on rooftops along Grand Road in front of the temple.&nbsp;

Thousands thronged Puri&rsquo;s Jagannath Temple for Nabajouban Darshan, the first public glimpse of deities after a fortnight. With chariots ready and NSG commandos deployed, Odisha gears up for the grand Rath Yatra on June 27.

A day before the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, thousands of devotees on Thursday thronged Odisha's Puri to witness the reappearance of sibling deities at the 12th-century shrine in Puri.
They reached the 'Singha Dwar' (Lion&rsquo;s Gate) of the temple much before the sun rose to have a 'Nabajouban darshan' (youthful appearance) of the Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath on the &lsquo;Ratna Bedi&rsquo; (sacred platform in sanctum sanctorum).
The deities appear before the devotees after a fortnight.
The public &lsquo;darshan&rsquo; of the sibling deities was stopped after bathing rituals on June 11.
"It is believed that the deities do not appear before devotees as they fall ill after the bathing rituals. They remain in quarantine at 'Anasar Ghar' (isolation room) for a fortnight before Rath Yatra," said Bhaskar Mishra, a researcher in the Jagannath culture.
According to a Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) official, the temple opened for devotees for 'Nabajouban Darsan' from 8 am to 10.30 am.
On the 'Nabajouban Besha', the sibling deities wear a special youthful dress, and the ritual is held to celebrate the rejuvenation of Lord Jagannath. The day is also referred to as &ldquo;Netra Ustav&rdquo; (eye-opening festival) when the eyes of the idols are painted.
Designated servitors perform this ritual, which is a secret affair in the temple, Mishra said.
&ldquo;The devotees were first allowed to go inside the temple for a 'parmanik' (paid) darshan, which was held between 8 am and 9 am, and the general public darshan was conducted between 9 am to 10.30 am," the SJTA official said, adding that later the doors were closed for the day.
SJTA chief administration Arabinda Padhee said, "The 'Nabajouban Darsan' has been completed smoothly with the support of all the servitors. We hope that the Rath Yatra will go smoothly." During the day, the three chariots would be parked in front of the shrine&rsquo;s main gate.
"They will be pulled from Rath Khada (chariot yards) in the afternoon. The rituals of parking the chariots will be performed," the SJTA official said.
The construction of three wooden chariots- 'Taladwaja' (Lord Balabhadra&rsquo;s chariot), 'Debadalan' of Devi Subhadra and 'Nandighosh' of Lord Jagannath has been completed and is ready to roll on the Grand Road on June 27.
On the occasion of the Rath Yatra, a massive deployment of 10,000 security personnel, comprising those in the Odisha Police and jawans of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), has been made.
For the first time, commandos of the National Security Guards (NSG) have also been deployed for the festival.
&ldquo;NSG personnel will keep a watch on the festival from rooftops while around 275 AI-enabled cameras are placed at strategic positions in Puri town for the mega event," Odisha DGP Y B Khurania said, adding that special plans are chalked out for crowd management, traffic control, health services and other amenities.
Adequate security arrangements have also been made in and around the Sri Gundicha temple, the place where the chariots with deities on board will be taken and parked for a week, the DGP said.
Personnel of Odisha marine police, Coast Guard and Indian Navy have also been deployed to ensure coastal security.&nbsp;

At least two persons died and over 130 were injured in two different incidents during Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra in Odisha, officials said on Monday.&nbsp;
A resident of Bolangir district died allegedly due to suffocation in a stampede-like situation on Sunday during the Rath Yatra in Puri, a health official said.&nbsp;
"When we put him in the ambulance, his pulse was running. We took him to the hospital and gave him CPR. However, doctors declared him brought dead," said Sushant Kumar Patnaik, assistant commandant of St John ambulance service.&nbsp;
According to sources, the devotee fainted on Grand Road while pulling the chariot of Lord Balabhadra. He was immediately rushed to the Puri District Headquarters Hospital, where the doctor declared him brought.&nbsp;
Expressing grief over his death, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased.&nbsp;
He also instructed officials concerned to ensure the best available medical care for the injured devotees.&nbsp;
In another incident, a devotee allegedly died after coming under the wheels of a chariot during Rath Yatra in Jharsuguda district on Sunday, police said.&nbsp;
The mishap occurred during the pulling of the chariot of Jagannath temple at Kukujangha village in the district. The deceased has been identified as Shyam Sundar Kishan (45).&nbsp;
While pulling the chariot, he accidentally fell down and the wheels of the chariot ran over him. He was immediately rushed to the district headquarters hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.&nbsp; More than 130, including a few police personnel, were also injured during the Rath Yatra in Puri, a health officer of Puri district said.&nbsp;
Half of the injured persons have been discharged after treatment on the same day while at least 40 persons are undergoing treatment, he said.&nbsp;
More than 600 people have visited hospitals and medical camps in Puri. However, only over 130 have been admitted to hospital, said Director of Health Services, Bijay Mohapatra.&nbsp;
"Such admission in hospital during Rath Yatra is normal. None of the injured is in very serious condition. We are providing treatment to the injured devotees," he said.&nbsp;
After visiting the hospital on Sunday night, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari said, "One person died while many others were admitted after sustaining injuries in stampede, dehydration, dysentery and other reasons. No one is serious." As hot and humid weather was prevailing in Puri on Sunday, many people suffered in the hot weather condition also, he said.&nbsp;

'Nabajouban Darshan' means youthful appearance of deities, who were behind the doors for 15 days in a ritual called 'Anasara' (quarantine), conducted after 'Snana Purnima'.&nbsp;
According to mythology, the deities fall ill due to excessive bathing on 'Snana Purnima' and therefore remain indoors.&nbsp;
Prior to 'Nabajouban Darshan', the priests performed the special ritual called 'Netra Utsav' in which the eyeballs of the deities are painted afresh.&nbsp;
Tight security arrangements have been put in place, with the deployment of 180 platoons (one platoon comprises 30 personnel) of security personnel, a police officer said.&nbsp;
Artificial Intelligence-based CCTV cameras have been installed at Badadanda, the venue of the festival, and other strategic locations in the pilgrim town, he said.&nbsp;

Jagannath Yatra, also known as the Rath Yatra, is an annual festival dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu, celebrated primarily in Puri, Odisha, India. It is a popular Hindu festival which is celebrated annually in the city of Odisha.
&nbsp;It falls on the Dwitiya Tithi, the second day of the bright fortnight of the Sharad Paksha, a fortnight of the Hindu lunar month of Asadh. &nbsp;This year the Rath Yatra will begin on July 7.

The Jagannatha Rath Yatra festival began in the 12th to 16th century. Some say it represents Lord Krishna&rsquo;s visit to his mother&rsquo;s birthplace. Another section believes that it started with King Indradyumna, who supposedly set up the rituals.
Many historical documents reveal that the festival became prominent during the rule of Odisha&rsquo;s Gajapati kings.
At the core of the Jagannatha Rath Yatra is the symbolic journey of three deities: Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra, and their sister Subhadra. These deities are believed to leave the sanctum of the Jagannath Temple in Puri and undertake a nine-day sojourn to the Gundicha Temple, located approximately 3 kilometres away.
This festival lasts for nine days. On the first day, there is a Rath Yatra, after which the Lord rests in the Gundicha temple. On the ninth day, the Lord returns to his main temple, which is called Bahuda Yatra.

Six people died and 15 others were injured as a Rath caught fire after coming in contact with a high-tension wire in Tripura's Unakoti district on Wednesday, police said.
The incident happened around 4.30 pm in Kumarghat area during the 'Ulta Rath Yatra' festival of Lord Jagannath, they said.
During this festival, the sibling deities -- Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhdara and Lord Jagannath -- return to their abode, a week after Rath Yatra.
Thousands of people were pulling the Rath, made of iron, when it came in contact with a 133 kv overhead cable, police said.
Six people died on the spot and 15 others received burn injuries, Assistant Inspector General (Law &amp; Order) Jyotishman Das Chowdhury told PTI.
The injured were undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital, he said.
Their conditions were stated to be critical, officials said.
Chief Minister Manik Saha condoled the deaths.
"In a tragic accident at Kumarghat, several pilgrims lost their lives and several others were injured due to electrocution while pulling the 'Ulta Rath'. I am deeply saddened by this incident. Deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Also, I wish the injured persons a speedy recovery. The state government stands by them in this difficult time," he said.&nbsp;
