Under attack over the fact-check provisions of the IT Amendment Rules, Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday dismissed the criticism as "deliberate misinformation".
Chandrashekar's remarks came in response to CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury describing the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules as "draconian", "unacceptable" and one that gave "sweeping powers" to the Press Information Bureau to "censor content" on social media platforms.
Besides Yechury, Congress leader Pawan Khera and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi also slammed the IT Amendment Rules as a "new way to restrict news critical of the government".
"There are NO Sweeping powers - neither is it 'draconian'. IT Rules already have provisions from Oct 2022, which mandate Social Media intermediaries to not carry certain types of content if they are to have legal immunity under Sec79 of IT act," Chandrasekhar said on Twitter.

Twitter has moved the Karnataka high court challenging the central government's order seeking withdrawal of certain content from its platform that allegedly violate Section 69A of the IT Act.
In its writ petition, the microblogging site has reportedly called the blocking orders "overbroad and arbitrary".
The accounts and content that Twitter has been asked to pull down include those pertaining to the nationwide farmers' protest against the three farm laws passed by the Centre in 2020, COVID-19 management, and so on. 
In a missive sent of June 27, the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) gave Twitter “one last opportunity” to comply with its blocking orders. The ministry warned that if content flagged by it is not taken down by the microblogging platform, the company will risk losing its immunity as an intermediary. The deadline ended on July 4.
The move came after the IT ministry proposed fresh amendments to rules governing intermediaries such as Facebook and Twitter. Key amendments include a proposal to set up government-appointed grievance committees with the power to review and revoke content moderation decisions taken by these companies.

"Today there are 100 crores users of Twitter in India. I am happy. Let them earn money. Allow users to criticize us. Most welcome. But when these profit-making companies start lecturing us on democracy...."
"I would like to ask a question- India is a democracy because it's elections are fair. We won Assam and lost Bengal recently. We have I dependent judiciary that keeps us asking questions like in case of Covid. We are following. Media asks tough questions from a senior minister. That's what freedom of speech and democracy is about. These issues are important. But under garb of these you think you won't comply then it's a misplaced argument."

It takes a fortnight for us (Centre) to pursue you to remove it. This isn't fair. As a democracy, India is equally entitled to safeguard its digital sovereignty."
In an exclsuive interview to ANI, Prasad said that India has a vibrant democracy and the central government welcomes criticism but 'non-compliance of law under the garb of freedom of speech and democracy is not acceptable'.
"Today there are 100 crores users of Twitter in India. I am happy. Let them earn money. Allow users to criticize us. Most welcome. But when these profit-making companies start lecturing us on democracy...."
"I would like to ask a question- India is a democracy because it's elections are fair. We won Assam and lost Bengal recently. We have I dependent judiciary that keeps us asking questions like in case of Covid. We are following. Media asks tough questions from a senior minister. That's what freedom of speech and democracy is about. These issues are important. But under garb of these you think you won't comply then it's a misplaced argument."
The Union Minister accused Twitter of "deliberately choosing the path of non-compliance."
Prasad said, "When Indian companies do business or pharma companies go to manufacture in the US, do they follow American laws or not? If you have to do business here, you're welcome to criticise PM and all of us..but one has to obey India's Constitution and rules."
Twitter lost its status as an intermediary platform in India for allegedly not fully complying with the new IT rules. Under the new IT rules, social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter are more accountable to legal requests for swift removal of posts and sharing details on the originators of messages.

He also accused former Congress president Rahul Gandhi of making false statements against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP using social media platforms, even as he wanted to exercise his right to be on Facebook.
Singh, the lone saffron party legislator from the southern state, claimed he did not have a Facebook account since April 2019 and that the pages the social networking site now banned might have been created by his followers.
Under pressure for weeks over its handling of hate speech, Facebook on Thursday said it has banned Raja Singh from its platform and Instagram for violating its policy on content promoting violence and hate.
Reacting to the ban, Singh wanted to know whether the social networking site was working under the Congress party's pressure.
He said he had written a letter to Hyderabad Police Cyber Crime department on October 8, 2018 that his official Facebook verified page was hacked.
He again started a new page which "was unpublished/ deleted in April 2019." "So, Since April 2019, I'm not on Facebook itself, so no question of banning (me). Is Facebook working under the pressure of Congress," Singh said in a brief statement.
In a separate video message the legislator said leaders like Rahul Gandhi made 'false' statements against the BJP and Modi, using social media platforms and demanded that after thorough research, accounts of Congress and AIMIM parties should be deleted from social networking sites.
Singh said he will write to Facebook to open an account for him, adding that all rules and regulations will be adhered to.
"I will write to Facebook to open my official account. I will follow all rules and regulations to use it. I should be given the right to use Facebook account and I will seek their permission," he said.
Stating that Facebook is a neutral platform, Singh said linking it with BJP is not fair.
On Thursday, Facebook said it has banned Raja Singh "for violating our policy prohibiting those that promote or engage in violence and hate from having a presence on our platform." Post the ban, Singh has been designated under Facebook's dangerous individuals and organisations policy, and will not be allowed to maintain a presence on the platform going forward.
The process for evaluating potential violators is extensive and it is what led to Facebook's decision to remove his account, a statement from the company said.
Facebook, which counts India among its largest markets with over 300 million users, has been in the eye of a storm after a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report alleged that its content policies favoured the ruling BJP.
The report had alleged that Facebook had ignored posts containing hate speech by Raja Singh. Since then, the BJP and Congress have been trading barbs over the social media giant's alleged bias.
In the wake of the WSJ report, a Parliamentary panel had summoned Facebook representatives to discuss the issue of alleged misuse of the social media platform on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had also written to Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg accusing the social media platform's employees of supporting people from a political predisposition that lost successive elections, and "abusing" the Prime Minister and senior cabinet ministers.
Congress had also written to Facebook, complaining of 'bias' towards the BJP.
