Hezbollah held a funeral on Monday for its top military chief and other members of the militant group a day after a deadly Israeli strike on south Beirut, while Iran's Revolutionary Guards urged revenge.
Haytham Ali Tabatabai is the most senior commander from the Iran-backed group to be killed by Israel since a November 2024 ceasefire sought to end more than a year of hostilities between the two sides.
Sunday's raid came with Israel escalating its attacks on Lebanon and Washington increasing pressure on the government to disarm the group and cut off its sources of funding.
Tehran slammed Tabatabai's killing as "cowardly" while Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said "the right of the Axis of Resistance and Lebanese Hezbollah to avenge the blood of the brave fighters of Islam is unquestionable" -- referring to Iran-backed armed groups hostile to Israel.
Hundreds of supporters joined Monday's funeral procession in Beirut's densely populated southern suburbs, where Hezbollah holds sway, for Tabatabai and two of his companions, whose coffins were draped in the group's yellow flags, an AFP correspondent said.
The crowd yelled slogans against Israel and America, while supporters carried portraits of the group's leaders and Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
France's foreign ministry and UN chief Antonio Guterres's spokesman expressed concern at the strike and urged restraint, with the UN's Stephane Dujarric reminding parties that "civilians and civilian areas must not be targeted".
 - 'Civilian areas' -
Israel's military had said it "eliminated the terrorist Haytham Ali Tabatabai, Hezbollah's chief of general staff".
The group announced the deaths of Tabatabai and four other members in the attack.
Hezbollah said Tabatabai assumed the role of military leader after the latest war with Israel, which saw the group heavily weakened and senior commanders killed including its longtime chief Hassan Nasrallah.
Israel has carried out near-daily strikes on Lebanon despite the ceasefire, usually saying it is targeting Hezbollah members and infrastructure, and accusing the group of rearming.
According to the truce, Hezbollah was to withdraw north of the Litani River, some 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Israeli border, and to have its military infrastructure there dismantled.
Under a government-approved plan, Lebanon's army is to finish disarming Hezbollah in the area by year's end, before tackling the rest of the country.
Hezbollah has rejected calls to surrender its weapons.
After Tabatabai's killing, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would "not allow Hezbollah to rebuild its power" and urged Lebanon's government to "fulfil its commitment to disarm Hezbollah".
A source close to Hezbollah told AFP on condition of anonymity there were "two opinions within the group -- those who wish to respond to the assassination and those who want to refrain from doing so -- but the leadership tends to adopt the utmost forms of diplomacy at the present stage".

- 'Very limited' options -
Senior Hezbollah official Ali Damush told the funeral that Tabatabai's killing aimed to push Hezbollah into "surrendering and submitting, but this goal will never be achieved".
Israel was "worried about Hezbollah's possible response -- and should remain worried", he said, urging Lebanese authorities to "confront the aggression by all means... and reject the pressures that seek to push Lebanon to comply with American dictates and Israeli conditions".
Atlantic Council researcher Nicholas Blanford told AFP that "Hezbollah's options are very limited".
"Its support base is clamouring for revenge but if Hezbollah responds directly... Israel will strike back very hard and no one in Lebanon will thank Hezbollah for that," he said.
Sunday's strike was the biggest blow to Hezbollah since the ceasefire "because of (Tabatabai's) seniority... it demonstrates the Israelis can still locate and target senior officials despite whatever protective measures Hezbollah is undertaking" since the war, Blanford added.
Lebanon's army says it is implementing its plan to disarm Hezbollah, but the United States and Israel have accused Lebanon's authorities of stalling.
Condemning the attack, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said Sunday that "the only way to consolidate stability" was through "extending the authority of the state over all its territory".
Last December, Hezbollah also lost a key supply route through Syria with the fall of longtime ruler and ally Bashar al-Assad.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have discovered a major Hamas tunnel in the Gaza Strip, where the body of Lieutenant Hadar Goldin had been held. Lieutenant Goldin was killed in an ambush during the 2014 Israel-Hamas war, and his remains were returned to Israel earlier this month.
On Thursday, the IDF posted a video on X showing the tunnel that had housed Goldin's body. The military said the tunnel runs beneath a densely populated area of Rafah and passes through a UNRWA (United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees) compound, mosques, clinics, and kindergartens.
According to the IDF, Hamas commanders used the tunnel to store weapons, plan attacks, and remain underground for extended periods. The tunnel is over seven kilometres long, 25 metres deep, and contains 80 rooms. It was uncovered by the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit in coordination with the Shayetet 13 naval commando unit.
The IDF described it as &ldquo;one of Gaza's largest and most complex underground routes, over 7 km long, ~25 meters deep, with ~80 hideouts, where abducted IDF officer Lt. Hadar Goldin was held.&rdquo; Rooms used as command posts by senior Hamas leaders, including Muhammad Shabana&mdash;killed alongside Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar in May&mdash;were also discovered.

In another X post, the IDF announced the arrest of Marwan Al-Hams, calling him &ldquo;a Hamas terrorist involved in the determination of Lt. Hadar Goldin's death.&rdquo; The military added, &ldquo;Al-Hams was also suspected of knowing the location of Lt. Goldin's burial in the &lsquo;White-Crowned&rsquo; tunnel in Rafah.&rdquo;
&ldquo;The operation in July 2025 was part of dozens of confidential operations conducted in the past 6 months to retrieve Lt. Hadar Goldin &amp; return him for burial in Israel,&rdquo; the IDF said.
Meanwhile, in ongoing developments from the Gaza war that began in October 2023, Israeli airstrikes on Thursday killed five people and injured 18 in Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Medics told Reuters that one strike on a house in Bani Suhaila east of Khan Younis killed three people, including a baby girl, and wounded 15, while another strike killed a man and injured three others in nearby Abassan town.
The strikes followed mutual accusations by Hamas and Israel of violating a nearly six-week-old truce that has become increasingly fragile.
The conflict began after Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people&mdash;mostly civilians&mdash;and taking 251 hostages. Israel&rsquo;s retaliatory offensive has killed over 69,000 Palestinians, also primarily civilians, according to health officials in Gaza.

Netanyahu said that both India and Israel share a deep-rooted bond as ancient civilisations united by shared values and resilience.
&ldquo;India and Israel are ancient civilisations that stand on eternal truths. Terror may strike our cities, but it will never shake our souls. The light of our nations will outshine the darkness of our enemies,&rdquo; he added.
He emphasised that while terrorism may attempt to instil fear, it cannot break the unyielding spirit of nations determined to protect peace and humanity.
Global Solidarity and Ongoing Probe
Netanyahu&rsquo;s message comes amid widespread international support for India following the Red Fort explosion, which authorities are investigating as a possible terror attack.
In the wake of the incident, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formed a &ldquo;dedicated and comprehensive&rdquo; investigation team to probe the blast, which officials believe was carried out by a Jaish-e-Mohammad module uncovered earlier by Indian agencies.
The NIA team, comprising senior officers of the rank of Superintendent of Police and above, will ensure a coordinated and in-depth probe under the supervision of top leadership.
The decision followed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) formally handing over the case to the NIA, citing a clear terror angle behind the explosion.
Following the transfer, the agency registered a case and launched a detailed investigation to trace those responsible and identify any broader network involved.
Sources said the NIA is working closely with central and state security agencies and examining multiple angles &mdash; including whether the explosion was deliberate or accidental &mdash; as part of its ongoing inquiry.

Israel said it struck a series of Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon on Thursday, with President Joseph Aoun denouncing the new attacks as a "fully-fledged crime" and accusing Israel of rejecting Beirut's overtures towards diplomacy.
The Lebanese military said Israel was preventing the full implementation of a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah, which hours earlier had publicly asserted its right to defend itself and rejected the prospect of direct political talks between Lebanon and Israel.
The truce deal was agreed between Israel and Hezbollah in November 2024 after more than a year of hostilities, but Israeli attacks in Lebanon have continued as it accuses the militant group of trying to rebuild its forces.
The Israeli military said its strikes on Thursday had targeted "terrorist infrastructure and weapon storage facilities in southern Lebanon".
"We will not allow Hezbollah to rearm themselves, to recover, build back up its strength, to threaten the state of Israel," Israeli government spokeswoman Shosh Bedrosian told reporters, accusing the group of "continuous terrorist activities".
A strike killed one person earlier in the day, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The Israeli military said it had targeted a Hezbollah construction team.
On Thursday evening, Aoun called the latest strikes "a fully-fledged crime, not only according to the provisions of international humanitarian law... but also a heinous political crime".
"Nearly a year has passed since the ceasefire came into effect, and during this period, Israel has spared no effort to demonstrate its rejection of any negotiated settlement between the two countries," he said.
"Your message has been received."
 - Persistent 'aggression' -
Lebanon and Israel are still technically in a state of war, but all the recent armed conflicts with Israel were fought by Hezbollah, not the Lebanese military.
The only diplomatic contact between the two countries is through the ceasefire monitoring mechanism, which includes the United States, France and the United Nations.
The body meets regularly at the headquarters of the UN force in southern Lebanon, but the Lebanese and Israeli parties do not directly communicate with each other.
Lebanese officials have recently voiced openness to direct talks with Israel, which maintains troops in five parts of south Lebanon in spite of the ceasefire's stipulation that it withdraw.
But after Thursday's strikes, President Aoun said that the more Beirut "expresses its openness to peaceful negotiations to resolve outstanding issues with Israel, the more Israel persists in its aggression against Lebanese sovereignty".
A Lebanese official told AFP on Thursday that Israel had not responded "positively nor negatively" to the offer of talks.
Last week, US envoy Tom Barrack had said that dialogue with Israel could be the key to easing tensions.
The Lebanese army, meanwhile, accused Israel of seeking to "undermine Lebanon's stability" with Thursday's strikes and to "prevent the completion of the army's deployment in accordance with the cessation of hostilities agreement".
Under the truce deal, the Lebanese military was meant to deploy to the south alongside UN peacekeepers as Hezbollah pulled back.
The UNIFIL peacekeeping mission said the latest wave of strikes "undermines the progress being made toward a political and diplomatic solution".
 - Disarmament drive -
The attacks came hours after Hezbollah lashed out at Lebanon's leadership, rejecting suggestions that it might be time to begin direct talks with Israel.
In an open letter to the Lebanese people and their leaders, Hezbollah said it rejected "any political negotiations" between Lebanon and Israel, and that such talks would "not serve the national interest".
"We reaffirm our legitimate right... to defend ourselves against an enemy that imposes war on our country and does not cease its attacks," Hezbollah added.
It nevertheless said it remained committed to the ceasefire.
Hezbollah was the only movement in Lebanon that refused to disarm after the 1975-1990 civil war, first claiming it had a duty to liberate territory occupied by Israel, and then to continue defending the country.
The group is backed by Iran, which also fought its own war against Israel earlier this year.
Since the ceasefire, the United States has increased pressure on Lebanese authorities to disarm the group, a move opposed by Hezbollah and its allies.
Lebanon says it has formulated a plan for imposing a state monopoly on weapons, and the government met Thursday to take stock of the disarmament efforts.
Information minister Paul Morcos said afterwards that the cabinet had "commended the progress achieved... despite ongoing obstacles, primarily the continued Israeli hostilities".
Last week, Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz accused Aoun of "dragging his feet" on disarmament.
Hezbollah has criticised the government's "hasty decision" to take away its weapons, claiming that Israel has taken advantage of the push.

According to public broadcaster KAN, Israel was ready to reopen the territory's Rafah border crossing to Egypt on Wednesday.
But hardliners like far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has called for aid supplies to Gaza to be cut if Hamas fails to return the remains of soldiers still held in the territory.

Von der Leyen added that the commission &ldquo;will set up a Palestine donor group next month,&rdquo; part of which will focus on Gaza's future reconstruction. She said the events in Gaza and the suffering of children and families &ldquo;has shaken the conscience of the world.&rdquo; &ldquo;Man-made famine can never be a weapon of war. For the sake of the children, for the sake of humanity. This must stop,&rdquo; she added, to applause in the European Parliament at its meeting in Strasbourg, France.
Von der Leyen's comments came the day after Israel's military warned Gaza City residents to evacuate ahead of its plans to take control of what it portrays as Hamas' last remaining stronghold and where hundreds of thousands of people remain under conditions of famine.
The warning came on Tuesday ahead of an Israeli strike targeting Hamas' leaders in Qatar, where negotiations over ending the war in Gaza appeared at a standstill. The warnings directed at Gaza City are the first calling for a full evacuation.
The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants abducted 251 people on October 7, 2023 and killed some 1,200 people, mostly Israeli civilians. Forty-eight hostages are still held inside Gaza, around 20 of them believed to be alive.
Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed at least more than 64,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which does not say how many were civilians or combatants. It says around half of those killed were women and children.

In this urgent moment of crisis, where many of our governments are enabling the carnage in Gaza, we must do everything we can to address complicity in that unrelenting horror," the statement read.
"Standing for equality, justice, and freedom for all people is a profound moral duty that none of us can ignore. So too, we must speak out now against the harm done to the Palestinian people," it added.
The pledge further requested the international film industry to stand against racism and dehumanisation and to do "everything humanly possible" to end the complicity in the oppression of the Palestinian people.
In 2024, a similar pledge was signed by over 7000 authors and book workers to boycott "complicit" Israeli publishing houses. Some of the signatories included winners of the Nobel Prize, Booker Prize, Pulitzer Prize, Giller Prize, MacArthur Fellowship, Miles Franklin Award, and National Book Award, including three winners, Percival Everett, Lena Khalaf Tuffaha, and Shifa Saltagi Safadi. In a statement, it named the reporters as photojournalists Hossam Al-Masri, Mohammad Salama and Mariam Dagga, and journalist Moaz Abu Taha.
A spokesperson for Qatar-based TV network Al Jazeera on Monday confirmed its photojournalist and cameraman Mohammad Salama was killed in the attack on the medical complex.
The three others worked with some Palestinian and international outlets, according to AFP journalists.
Associated Press said Mariam Dagga was a freelancer for the news agency but was not on an assignment with the media outlet when she was killed.
Reuters said that one of the journalists killed and one of those injured were contractors for the news agency.
The civil defence's Bassal said an Israeli explosive drone targeted a building at Nasser Hospital, followed by an air strike as the wounded were being evacuated.

Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by the civil defence agency or the Israeli military.
AFP footage from the immediate aftermath of the attack showed smoke filling the air and debris from the blast on the floor outside the hospital.
Palestinians rushed to help the victims, carrying bloodied bodies and severed body parts into the medical complex. One body could be seen dangling from the top floor of the targeted building as a man screamed below.
A woman wearing medical scrubs and a white coat was among the injured, carried into the hospital on a stretcher with a heavily bandaged leg and blood all over her clothes.
Before the latest killings, media advocacy groups the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Reporters Without Borders said around 200 journalists had been killed in the Gaza war.
Earlier this month, four Al Jazeera staff and two freelancers were killed in an Israeli air strike outside Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, prompting widespread condemnation.
The Israeli military alleged that Anas al-Sharif -- a prominent Al Jazeera correspondent killed in the strike -- headed a Hamas "terrorist cell" and was "responsible for advancing rocket attacks" against Israelis.
The CPJ slammed that strike, saying journalists should never be targeted in war.
"Journalists are civilians. They must never be targeted in war. And to do so is a war crime," Jodie Ginsberg, chief executive of the CPJ, told AFP at the time.
The war in Gaza was sparked by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

Settlement development in E1, an open tract of land east of Jerusalem, has been under consideration for more than two decades, but was frozen due to US pressure during previous administrations.
On Wednesday, the project received final approval from the Planning and Building Committee after the last petitions against it were rejected on August 6.
If the process moves quickly, infrastructure work could begin in the next few months and construction of homes could start in around a year.
The plan includes around 3,500 apartments to expand the settlement of Maale Adumim, far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said during a press conference at the site last Thursday.
Smotrich cast the approval as a riposte to western countries that announced their plans to recognise a Palestinian state in recent weeks.
&ldquo;This reality finally buries the idea of a Palestinian state, because there is nothing to recognise and no one to recognise,&rdquo; Smotrich told reporters. &ldquo;Anyone in the world who tries today to recognise a Palestinian state will receive an answer from us on the ground.&rdquo; The location of E1 is significant because it is one of the last geographical links between Ramallah, in the northern West Bank, and Bethlehem in the southern West Bank.

Israel's security cabinet has approved a plan by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take control of Gaza City as part of a five-point plan to "disarm" Hamas and end the war in the enclave.
The decision to take control of Gaza city came amid massive anti-government protests across Israel demanding an immediate end to the war in Gaza and ensuring immediate return of the hostages held captive by Hamas for the last 22 months.
"A decisive majority of Security Cabinet ministers believed that the alternative plan that had been submitted to the Security Cabinet would neither achieve the defeat of Hamas nor the return of the hostages," Netanyahu's office said.
It is not immediately clear what the alternative plan was.
The plan cleared by the Security Cabinet featured five principles.
These are: disarming of Hamas, return of all the hostages, the demilitarisation of Gaza, Israeli security control in Gaza and establishment of a civil administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority.
Netanyahu's office said the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) will prepare for taking control of Gaza City while distributing humanitarian assistance to the civilian population outside the combat zones.
Israel launched the war in Gaza after Hamas attacked the country on October 7, 2023 killing about 1,200 people. Hamas also took 251 people as hostages.
The Israeli military action in Gaza has killed an estimated 60,000 people.
Gaza has been reeling under a massive humanitarian crisis largely due to scarcity of food and medicines. The World Health Organisation said last month that Gaza's malnutrition rates have reached "alarming levels".
Ahead of the Security Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu told a group of visiting Indian journalists that Israel doesn't want to annex or occupy Gaza and its sole aim is to destroy Hamas and hand over the strip to a transitional government.
The prime minister also said that Israel wants to take control of Gaza's security.
Asked about the food crisis in Gaza, Netanyahu said over two million tonnes of food were sent to Israel, but the supplies were "interdicted".
"Our plan is not to occupy or annex Gaza. Our goal is to destroy Hamas and get our hostages back, and then handover Gaza to a transitory government," Netanyahu said.

India told a high-level UN conference that global efforts must now focus on achieving a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict through "purposeful dialogue and diplomacy".
It also said that one should not be content with paper solutions but strive to achieve practical ones.
India&rsquo;s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish said on Tuesday that deliberations during the preparation for the UN High-Level International Conference on &lsquo;The Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution&rsquo; confirm that the international community continues to believe there is no substitute for a two-state solution.
He said the conference offers an opportunity to reflect on the path traversed so far in the journey towards achieving peace through a two-state solution. &nbsp;&ldquo;Our efforts must now focus on how to bring about a two-state solution through purposeful dialogue and diplomacy, and bringing the parties to the conflict to engage directly with each other," Harish said.
"Reaffirmation of support must take the form of actionable steps that pave the way for the two-state solution. Identification of such steps and their implementation modalities demand our collective attention and effort,&rdquo; he said in the UN General Assembly.
The high-level conference on July 28-30 is co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France.
A 25-page outcome document titled &lsquo;New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution&rsquo; asserted that the war in Gaza must end now and Hamas must free all hostages.
&ldquo;In the context of ending the war in Gaza, Hamas must end its rule in Gaza and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority,&rdquo; the outcome document said.
It added that following a ceasefire, a transitional administrative committee must be immediately established to operate in Gaza under the umbrella of the Palestinian Authority.
Harish noted that certain action points are emerging from the UN conference, and following up on them is the key.
"Let us not be content with paper solutions but strive to achieve practical solutions that actually make a tangible difference in the daily lives of our Palestinian brothers and sisters,&rdquo; he said, expressing India&rsquo;s complete readiness to contribute to this &ldquo;noble endeavour.&rdquo; Harish said India has been clear on the measures that must be undertaken in the short term.
These include an immediate ceasefire, sustained and unimpeded humanitarian assistance, release of all hostages, and the path of dialogue and diplomacy.
"There are no alternatives to these measures,&rdquo; he said.
Noting that in 1988 India became one of the first countries to recognise the State of Palestine with firm support and commitment to the two-state solution, Harish underlined that the overall sentiment in this forum is clear.
&ldquo;It is also India&rsquo;s earnest desire to see peace and calm prevail in the Middle East. Lasting solutions are required to achieve this,&rdquo; he said.
Asserting that humanitarian aid to Gaza needs to flow without impediments, India said Palestinians in Gaza must have access to food, fuel and other basic necessities without hindrance.
&ldquo;Humanitarian assistance is vital in sustaining life and must remain outside the realm of politics or conflict,&rdquo; Harish said, underlining that the humanitarian assistance pillar demands &ldquo;our immediate attention and action.&rdquo; India voiced concern that the human suffering in Gaza continues unabated, tens of thousands have been killed, several medical facilities damaged or destroyed, and children deprived of schooling for more than 20 months.
India also stressed that the plight of the hostages should not be forgotten.
&ldquo;There can be no justification whatsoever for terrorism, for addressing any root cause or political grievance.&rdquo; &nbsp; Noting that civilians, including women and children, have the right to lead normal lives, India said that in the years ahead, &ldquo;meticulous reconstruction and rehabilitation" efforts of a substantially large scale will be required.
Highlighting the vital aspect of security, India said a stable arrangement that suitably caters to the security needs of both sides is necessary.
&ldquo;Neither party should feel insecure. A sovereign, viable and independent State of Palestine within recognised and mutually agreed borders, living side by side with Israel in peace and security, is a prerequisite for enduring peace and sustainable development.&rdquo; &nbsp;India further said that while aid and support are essential for the Palestinian people in rebuilding their lives, it is equally important to create hope and economic structures conducive for investment and employment. &nbsp;India has been making concerted efforts to bring about a tangible impact on the daily lives of the Palestinian people by implementing human-centric projects in diverse sectors. The total commitment by India on this front stands at around USD 160 million.
&ldquo;Economic prospects and viability for a Palestinian state are crucial,&rdquo; Harish said.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the conference that the central question for Middle East peace is the implementation of the two-state solution. &nbsp;&ldquo;My central question to those who stand in the way is this: What is the alternative?&rdquo; Guterres said, questioning whether the alternative is a one-state reality where Palestinians are denied equal rights, and forced to live under perpetual occupation and inequality or a one-state reality where Palestinians are expelled from their land.
&ldquo;That is not peace. That is not justice. That is not in accordance with international law. And that is not acceptable,&rdquo; the UN chief said.
Guterres stressed that statehood for the Palestinians is a right, not a reward. &ldquo;And the denial of statehood would be a gift to extremists everywhere.&rdquo; UN agencies warn that key food and nutrition indicators in Gaza have exceeded famine thresholds, reaching their worst levels so far.&nbsp;

Asserting that Israel's military campaign in Gaza amounts to "genocide", Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday slammed the Modi government for being a "mute spectator to this affront to humanity", and said this was a "cowardly betrayal of our constitutional values".
She also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "shameful silence" in the face of Israel's relentless and devastating assault on the people of Gaza is "deeply disappointing", as well as the height of "moral cowardice".
In an article published in the Hindi daily 'Dainik Jagran', Gandhi urged the prime minister to speak out "clearly, boldly and forthrightly" on behalf of the legacy that India has long represented.
She said nothing can justify Hamas' barbaric attacks on innocent men, women and children in Israel on 7 October 2023, or its continued holding of Israeli hostages thereafter.
She said these must be condemned repeatedly and unreservedly.
"But as members of the international community - and more so as human beings - it is our responsibility to acknowledge that the Israeli government's response and reprisals against the civilian population of Gaza have not only been egregious, but downright criminal," she asserted in her article in Hindi titled 'Gaza sankat par mookdarshak Modi sarkaar'.
Over the past nearly two years, more than 55,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed, including 17,000 children, Gandhi pointed out.
Most residential buildings in Gaza have been razed to the ground through relentless aerial bombardment, including hospitals, she said, adding that the social fabric has been completely shattered.
"The events since October 2023 have been disturbing, and in recent months the situation has become even more heart-wrenching. We have seen how humanitarian aid has been weaponised as part of a dastardly strategy. The Israeli Defense Forces have imposed a military blockade on Gaza, deliberately and cruelly blocking the supply of medicines, food and fuel to the population," the former Congress chief said.
"The wanton destruction of infrastructure and the unbridled massacre of civilians have led to a man-made tragedy - made worse by the blockade. This strategy of forced starvation is undoubtedly a crime against humanity," Gandhi said.
In the midst of this devastation, Israel has either outright rejected or blocked humanitarian aid from the United Nations and other international organisations, she asserted.
"In a perversion of every idea of humanity, armed soldiers of the Israeli Defense Forces have ruthlessly fired on hundreds of civilians who were trying to gather food for their families. The United Nations itself has expressed grave concern on this issue - and even the Israeli Defense Forces have had to admit this horrifying truth," Gandhi said.
"According to almost all objective assessments by experts on Israel's ongoing military occupation of Gaza, it is a campaign that amounts to genocide and aims to ethnically cleanse the Gaza Strip of Palestinians," she said.
Its scale and consequences are reminiscent of the Naqba tragedy of 1948, when Palestinians were forced from their homes, Gandhi said.
All this atrocities are being carried out to serve some of the most nefarious objectives - ranging from a colonial mindset to the selfish interests of a few "greedy" real estate tycoons, Gandhi claimed.
She asserted that the ongoing crisis has exposed one of the most serious weaknesses in the international system.
"UN General Assembly resolutions demanding an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza have been completely ignored. The United Nations Security Council has failed to impose sanctions on the Israeli government for its attacks on civilians in Gaza and the large-scale destruction of its infrastructure," she said.
The International Court of Justice's order of 26 January 2024 -- directing Israel to prevent acts of genocide and to provide essential services and humanitarian aid to civilians -- has also been completely ignored, Gandhi said.
Israel's direct and indirect support from the US not only encouraged these actions, but also made them possible, she added.
Gandhi opined that when international laws and institutions have become "virtually defunct", the fight to protect the interests of the people of Gaza is now left to individual countries.
Despite the risk of backlash, South Africa has taken the bold step of taking Israel to task at the International Court of Justice, and Brazil has now joined the effort, she noted.
France has decided to recognise the Palestinian state, and countries like Britain and Canada have imposed sanctions on Israeli leaders who have promoted aggression in Gaza, she said.
Even within Israel itself, the voices of protest are growing - a former prime minister has acknowledged the reality of Israeli war crimes in Gaza, she said.
"Amidst this humanitarian crisis and the rising global consciousness around it, it is a national shame that India has remained a mute spectator to this affront to humanity," Gandhi said.
"India has long been a symbol of global justice. We are the country that inspired global movements against colonialism, raised its voice against imperialist domination during the Cold War era, and led the international struggle against apartheid South Africa," she said.
"At a time when innocent human beings are being brutally slaughtered, India's abdication of its values is a blot on our national conscience, a disregard for our historical contributions, and also a cowardly betrayal of our constitutional values," Gandhi said.
She pointed out that the Directive Principles of State Policy clearly require the government to take effective steps to "promote international peace and security, maintain just and honourable relations between nations, foster respect for international law and treaty obligations, and encourage settlement of international disputes by arbitration.
"But Israel's blatant disregard for basic concepts of international law, human rights and justice -- and our current government's moral cowardice in the face of it -- is tantamount to a dereliction of our duties to our constitutional values," she said.
India has always been a supporter of the 'two-state solution' and a just peace between the people of Israel and Palestine, she asserted.
Gandhi recalled that in 1974, under the leadership of Indira Gandhi, India became the first non-Arab country to recognise the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) as the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
In 1988, India was among the first countries to officially recognise the State of Palestine, she noted.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi's shameful silence in the face of Israel's relentless and devastating assault on the people of Gaza is deeply disappointing. It is the height of moral cowardice. The time has come for him to speak out clearly, boldly and forthrightly on behalf of the legacy that India has long represented," she said.

A fresh batch of 173 Indians evacuated from Iran reached Delhi late Thursday night in a flight from Armenian capital Yerevan, the MEA said in a post on X.
At his weekly media briefing a day before, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in response to queries on Operation Sindhu, said New Delhi was assessing the situation on the ground and a decision on the future course of action would be taken based on it.
Over 3,400 Indian nationals have been evacuated so far in 14 flights from Iran since the start of Operation Sindhu, according to data shared by him during the briefing. Jaiswal later shared updated evacuee figures in the post on X after the arrival of the flight from Yeravan.
"A special evacuation flight from Yerevan, Armenia landed in New Delhi at 22:30 hrs on 26th June, bringing home 173 Indian nationals from Iran," he wrote.
"As part of #OperationSindhu, a total of 4415 Indian nationals (3597 from Iran and 818 from Israel) have been evacuated so far using 19 special evacuation flights including 3 IAF aircraft. 14 OCI card-holders, 9 Nepali nationals, 4 Sri Lankan nationals and 1 Iranian spouse of an Indian national were also evacuated from Iran," he added.
On June 24, India said while it remained "deeply concerned about the prospects for overall and sustained regional security and stability", it welcomed reports of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Hours after US President Donald Trump's claims of an Iran-Israel ceasefire, the MEA in a statement had said "India stands ready to play its part" to resolve the situation and insisted on "dialogue and diplomacy" as the way forward.
Jaiswal on Thursday was asked if India would continue Operation Sindhu after the Iran-Israel ceasefire, and about the total number of India nationals evacuated from the two countries so far.
"We launched Operation Sindhu on June 18. We have around 10,000 people. Indian community members in Iran. And, around 40,000 people in Israel who are Indian nationals," he had said.
One Iranian woman, who is the wife of an Indian national has also been evacuated, he added.
The MEA spokesperson had said, "In all, we mounted, 14 flights to bring back Indian nationals from Iran. These flights flew from Mashhad, as also from Yeravan in Armenia, and Ashgabat in Turkmenistan. I understand that one more flight is on its way from Armenia, and it will land later this evening. With that we would have completed.. all those people who wish to be evacuated from Iran." A special flight carrying 272 Indian and three Nepalese nationals from Iran arrived in Delhi a little past midnight (June 26) from the Iranian city of Mashhad, Jaiswal had posted on X earlier.

"As far as Israel is concerned, we have so far evacuated 818 Indian nationals in four flights. As you are aware the airspace in Israel was closed, so we had to take our people to bordering countries, i.e., Jordan and Egypt, and from both these countries they were put on special flights, and they came back home," he told reporters.
The MEA spokesperson said, "We are thankful to the government of Egypt and Jordan for their support." Indian embassies in Israel, Jordan and Egypt "collaborated very closely" with the MEA headquarters in Delhi, in mounting the evacuation operation.
"But, we would also like to thank government of Iran, as you would know that we made our requests, they opened their airspace for us to evacuate, our nationals. We are grateful to the government of Iran for this special gesture. We are also thankful to the governments of Turkmenistan and Armenia for helping us evacuate our people," he said.
India on Tuesday evacuated more than 1,100 citizens from Iran and Israel.
